This game is at Combo Breaker this year and I couldn't be more excited. I'm absolute garbage but the toys and comics and aesthetic fueled my imagination for years as a kid. Every notebook was full of Sauron drawings.
Excellent video, thanks. But i have a question: why you say "higher emulation requirements" for MAT2? You have Midway Arcades Treasures Deluxe Edition for PC, this is with MAT2 + MAT3. Best experience with Primal Rage instead of MAME. I love MS-DOS version, the move list for this version is very easy to learn.
MAT2 is available on several consoles, and if you choose to emulate PS2, that's hard on systems in general, especially low power or older pc's and devices. On Windows, I would agree that's the version to play with a friend. It fixes several of the emulation issues, as well as having the correct inputs for specials (except for the 'Eat a Human' moves - those are still botched). VS. AI however, MAT2 on any version is completely and totally inaccurate. Even on 16, the AI basically shuts down to shoto and zoning tactics, and rarely uses specials of their own. In my view, there is no "best" version of Rage outside of arcade hardware, because they are all special and different in their own way 😊
Awesome video and super informative!! I just bought the arcade PCB so was looking for something to watch while I wait for it to arrive and this is perfect. Thanks!
@@mysterygamefightclub5835 One year later and I still suck hard 😆 Still having a blast with it though! I come back to this video often to try and brush up on my skills!
@@keitorajames I believe in you! You'll get there eventually. Of course, the video will always be here, but I'm not hard to find if you need more specific tips. Facebook, Discord, Instagram. I'm around.
If doing so would result in Slashfang & Necrosan materializing as fully-fledged characters in OG Primal Rage, I might sacrifice one of my pinky toes & several cherished memories.
I just bought myself an arcade PCB of Primal Rage. They are beginning to get expensive and rare. Hopefully it works as well as the pictures were shown.
Word to the wise: the first four pins on the audio board are for stereo line out. The other pins are meant to be wired directly to speakers. You can also crimp 2-pin 22 awg (or larger) JST cabling to speaker wire to avoid doing any soldering. Took me weeks to find all that information. I had to Frankenstein two pcb's together to get a fully functioning board, myself. One had bad audio, the other had dark picture. So I stuck the good audio board on the good video, and voila - double the cost for one good pcb. Hopefully your adventures in pcb ownership go more smoothly than mine.
@@mysterygamefightclub5835 Thank you so much for the information. The PCB that is being sent to me should have the stereo wiring intact. All I need is a proper PS for it. I hope so too. It sort of terrifies me how anything can go wrong on these old boards lol.
I learned the game on Genesis and 32X back in the day - the 32X cart itself is like a collector's item now. That definitely wasn't the case back in the 90s.
Hola muy interesante video, hoy descargue emulador de ps2 y el midway arcade treasures pero no se ve tan bien como en tu video. Hi there! This footage was captured in RetroArch and using Duckstation core upscaled to 1920x1080, if I am remembering correctly. Hope it works for you. Enjoy!
This is perfect thank you. I'm still trying to learn but I need better controller I think. I've only recently been playing it but I've always known about it. I had the action figures as a kid. Thank you for this
If I may suggest - any controller that has a straight across grid (eg, ps3/ps4 Hori Fighting Commander) works well on pad. Stock controllers will work, but claw grip can be painful for sure. I regret not getting the Super Rage figures - very rare. I still have a few hanging around, somewhere. Happy Raging!
Not good. At all. It nets points for having the same cd ost as Saturn, v2.3 move set, and reasonably accurate AI, but everything else about gameplay falls on its face, like hard. "Choppy" doesn't even begin to describe how many frames of animation were lost, the physics of jumping, launching, and combos in general aren't even on the same planet as the arcade version. Compared to other console ports, it's near the bottom of the stack. Seriously, I would rather take the 32X version, which is based on 1.7, over this.
As it happens, I have since discovered DosBox-pure in RetroArch allows you to use SF2 soundfonts. It requires a fair bit of experimentation to find one you like, but Awe32 is "good enough", and some others have interesting effects.
Short answer: maybe I'm a one-man show and if I were to do this as a full tutorial series, I would want it to be edited. I can do that - but it requires an exponentially greater amount of time. Don't give up hope, though. The success of this live video I did just for funsies as an online convention panel is altogether surprising, humbling and inspiring.
Mystery, your matrix and commentary ROCK! However...can you add a link to the Saturn emulator and an easy way to install it on Win 10? I can't seem to find it. The DOS version seems to work just fine...but I'd like better resolution (32" 4k monitor). Thank you for your dedication to this genre! --and yes...killing it without a sweat! 👍👍
Thank you so much! Saturn has been a fickle beast to emulate, but thankfully the situation has improved, even since this video. I recommend installing RetroArch and then once you open it, go to Online Updater > Core Downloader > and use either the Sega-Saturn (Beetle) or ST-V (Kronos) cores. Remember to acquire the Saturn BIOS and drop it into the System folder of RetroArch. Should be good to go from there.
👍👍Thanks for your reply -- It still seems pretty daunting but I'll try to dabble in it in May - lost my interest in machine internals many years ago. Very flattered that you responded to my untimely review of your post👍👍
Ah, dude. An Arcade1Up cab would be great. If anyone has a chance at convincing Netherrealm to figure out the encryption so it can be properly emulated - it might be them. Otherwise it would likely be running yet another custom port that no doubt would have its own issues.
didn't know know how to do the *High Power* / *Low Power* attacks until this video... i got lucky button-mashing a few times and was able to perform them in the heat of the moment. i also didn't know this game had a quick-jump 🧐 I thought that was just one of those things that only the ai could do! 😁😁😁
Does anybody remember the six flags coupons the Sega Genesis manual had in the back. It came with a Backpage that had discount for tickets if anybody remembers that that'll c tight. Does anybody remember the comic book mortal Kombat 1 in the genesis had.
I don't know why but this game has been in my head for awhile. I used to love fighting games but they take so long to get adept at. Unless something amazing comes out the only thing I think that would get me to come out of retirement is this game getting a PROPER remake. If they still have the images for this game, I think the best thing they could do is just up those to the highest quality as possible, do some tweaking to moves if necessary and make it have buttery online.
It was definitely easier to master a game back in the day when there was fewer than a dozen characters or so. It's easy to see why people typically stick with a main or two and never explore outside of them in modern fighters. NRS has the rights to Rage now, and with WB Games as their overlords, the odds of it ever getting a remaster, or even a new game, are slim to none. The most we got was a cameo in the corner of MK11's tournament stage.
Thankee 😁 The version I'm demonstrating from is the PSX version for the simple fact it's easy to emulate and is a 'good enough' port, but the vast majority of what you see here translates to the other ports if you would like to try them out. They're all different and special in their own way 😉
If I had to guess, not likely. If there was, it would probably be yet another custom port with its own problems. Unless we get some die-hard crackers on the case, that copy protection will always be an issue, unfortunately.
I still waiting for another remake of this masterpiece
I love this game

Now that the BigPEmu emulator has made Jaguar CD emulable, how would you rank the Jaguar CD version of the game?
Not good. At all.
