You couldn't possibly understand the power of this scene without having watched the entire film. To do so completely undermines it's meaning.
Definitely have to watch whole film. A scene here and there doesn't do it justice in it's meaning.

The movie was originally BANNED for being TO VIOLENT in the USA. At the time there were more movies with more death scenes than this movie. It actually highlighted DOMESTIC VIOLENCE and alot of people cried cos it was true in THAT ERA. The writer ALAN DUFF is my relative, and the book was based LOOSELY on his family upbringing, as a teen, in the '70s.
I grew up in Onehunga & went to school with those kids in the 70's. Seeing this movie made me realise why some of those kids were the way they were.
It's a violent film but an honest one.

I remember watching it at the movies and felt embarrassed coming out, being Maori I felt like everyone was looking at us.
A snapshot of low socio-economic New Zealand in the 90s.
Unfortunately realistic as especially for some of my boys....lucky for me I was raised by my grandparents and our whanau were pig/deer hunters and fisherman.

It’s sad that this movie portrays some of the reality’s that some of our women and children have to endure in real life. I was only in high school in Auckland when this movie came out and recognised some of the locations.
Never be embarrassed. This movie started a conversation that was needed. It's a conversation we are still having. I was a European Kiwi living in a low social economic area. My friends were usually raised by their mums because dad was inside. The colour red became the most popular colour to wear. I had a mate come stay at my place till the AOS were finished at his house. It is things like this move, the bravery of Hinewhei Mohai to sing the real national anthem and the continuing growth and inclusion of a Kiwis to realise that the Kiwi culture is best served by embracing what is good about Moari culture and that culture is something to be respected and shared. It is who you are, it is who you chose to become. Sometimes we set the bar to high. It isn't about seeking pride from other people, when all you need is to give yourself pride in your self.

As a Maori who grew up in a poor area with poor parents so much in this movie I can relate to. Remember my mum watching it and saying "eh fuck dats not even dat bad". Money went on parties, alcohol brought violence and kids looked after kids. Grow up resilient but also resentful
Stay strong and resilient Patrick….history of our families is our essence…until we know that maybe it’s not the future. Sometimes we have to break the family tradition to go forward.

As a Kiwi myself its disappointing seeing people do reaction videos to this one part of the movie. They are missing the whole story and need to watch the film. By the way there is a second movie that follows on from Once Were Warriors, the film is called "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted?".
How powerfully accurate of what you're saying . I'm seen a few watch reactions to this , and they talk a lot of dribble over dialogue that explains context. I remember going to the movies , joking to my then partner brfore it started ( I was 22 , ) when I walked out , I felt every emotion . And then some .

Once Were Warriors, made about 17 years ago. My brother in law was in the movie. It was a movie that opened the doorway to start the talk of what was kept as the secret in families that was going through this. We as Maori, are Warriors. Proud people that through colonization adapted to a world of alcohol. Loss of identity. Devaluing what was strong in our hearts which is Wairua, aroha, Whanau, Tupuna. Not all, but through being westernized, sadly this became a norm for our lower income society whanau/family. This movie became the change for our people. The korero started, even our males that abused, they have support now to get help to find tools that work instead of fists. My suggestion is, watch the full movie. It is a reality in alot of our peoples lives. But seeing our people move from that era to ensure we stand proud as the Warriors we once were.

Once were Warriors a movie about Maori people and the struggles that face Our People. We were a Warrior culture who was colonized by the British. What becomes of the broken hearted is the sequel.
And “Jake’s long shadow” is the third book in the series.
Cliff Curtis plays the uncle. He is Maori and is in a lot of American made films. Like other Maori actors/actress we intend to play a lot of ethnic characters like Hispanic, Indian, Arab, Filipino, you get my drift.
Jake is played by Temuera Morrison. Same thing, been in a few American made movies. He plays a couple of characters in the star wars franchise. He is Boba Fett in 'the Mandalorian', Jango Fett in 'star wars: attack of the clones' and plays the father of an aqua man, Thomas curry.
This movie came out in 1994, and has a sequel called "What becomes of the broken hearted."
This movie is so moving and under rated.
The main actor Temuera Morrison played jango fett in star wars, as well.
Another movie to watch is chopper. It is played by Eric Bana
He plays Aquamans father too in Aquaman
Watch the whole movie..she read the journal of her late daughter who killed herself..but to get the full facts of this hiding ( nz word for beating ) you must watch the whole movie..this is literally the end of the movie..
And sad to say this but when this movie came out, it was a reflection of life for many back then..the violence, the drinking, the abuse, the fear.. it still lingers but there is more help available these days and a lot are trying to "break the cycle".. there is truth and similarity to this movie with real world problems..

Rena Owens really poured herself into this role and it took a heavy toll on her. She never played any other significant roles. At most, you'll find interviews with her from some years after Once Were Warriors.
This movie will never age, the storyline is absolutely amazing and need for big special effects, perfect storyline acted out perfectly by the crew. MUST WATCH.
I like to hope it will age. Where we live in a world with no domestic violence.

One of the most well known films to come from New Zealand. Definitely need to see the whole film to appreciate this scene. Grace being so broken by her assault that she can’t go on. Jake putting his mates ahead of his family constantly and then being betrayed so badly by one of them. Quite confronting to watch but very well acted. Cliff Curtis’s break out role.
The context is in watching the entire movie. As a Māori, half my family refused to watch it because a denial of the violence in culture and also did not want people to assume this what Māori culture is all about.
Sadly, Rena Owen (aka Beth Heke) did not receive an award for her stella performance.
Left many New Zealand audiences in tears and haunted from the reality of poverty in New Zealand, alcoholism and domestic violence.
Resonated with many indigenous and first-nations cultures. worldwide.

I hope you ended up watching this film. Important to appreciate the colonial background to which Jake and Beth’s whanau (family) is depicted. Consider for a moment a fallen house analogy. That their whanau resides in state housing, the same state whose colonial history is replete with having eroded the cultural foundations and pillars of a once proud warrior people, of course Jake and Beth would be in state housing as the cultural roof of what could have been their whare (house) no longer has any structure on which to stand. Their broken state home is a metaphor for Te Ao Maori (Maori worldview) utterly undermined. It acts as a poignant reminder for New Zealanders of the subjugation of an indigenous people, the consequences of which reach into this day. It pays to be transformed by this knowledge, lest one fails to see the truth and reckon “what a bunch of lazy, good-for-nothing buggers” when confronted by people whose at times destructive actions are contoured by intergenerational deprivation and suffering. The cyclical occurrences of violence, drunkenness, gang involvement, and antagonism to government authority is better understood in the shadow of the fallen house of Te Ao Maori. It is against all this that Beth shines all the brighter as she becomes mana wahine (woman of power/authority) and makes steps to recover for her family the mana of her people (supernatural force and prestige that pervades all people, things and places).
The Maori people can either be your best friends or your worst enemies and you can go from one to the other very quickly . Gang life in New Zealand is still as hard as it ever was

This is a iconic New Zealand movie. It portrays the reality of Maori Homes in New Zealand (the indigenous people of NZ). It is very very accurate and potrays the generational curses of Maori homes. This is not really acting so it may seem exaggerated to you, but it’s very real even today.
Geez mate what a thing to say. This is certainly the experience for a few but you make it sound like that’s the way it is for all.
Theres a few powerful scenes in this movie. It came out when i was 13, i walked out of the theatre in tears and upset like most people did. It still hits even now im 41.
The entire film needs to be watched because this isn't the only scene in the film that's raw! We all feel like it's too close to home! Because it happened back then and no doubt still does

The sad part here is that Grace, being for decades a recipient of Jakes violence, vicariously kills Uncle Bully herself: she knew exactly how Jake would react and manipulated him in order to get revenge for Grace. The cycle of domestic and family violence.
The guy acting as Uncle Bully is also the Director of Thor: Ragnarok and the actor acting as Jake is BOBA FETT.
Taika waititi is the director of Thor Ragnarok and that isn't him(Uncle Bully)

This movie is my top 3 best movies ever. Any father wud do exactly wat Jake did to Bully, The close up on his face & the slo tune just makes that scene much more intense. The first time I watched this I was 5 or 6 and I didn't know or understand what he had done to her but when I got older and realised... It hit me so hard

It was one of the most powerful movies ever made in the 90s .
The follow-up movie ,what became of the broken hearted, was good too . But I didn't have the same emotional impact as this one ,and it wasn't a brutal either
grace the daughter in the movie is my 1st cuzn the 13 yr old that killed her self because being abused by her dads mate on the movie but to be honest that was life back then it is and still now the same. but not as bad, the movie was graphic but to many maori people it was life . narrcistic agro men show love from a punch to the face it how it was

Beth was of royal blood, Jake was from a line of slaves .The tattoo on sons face shows he recognized his mothers side ( left ) but not his fathers . This movie was about drug abuse and domestic violence as seen in every country on the planet . It is not about the beautiful Maori culture .

so the guys wearing the headscarves that pull Jake back the one with the glasses is my brother in law and the other one is my mate. Had a few friends and family in this movie.

Unfortunately, this is a hard truth in our culture. This hits close to home and brings back some not so good memories.
That isn't fake and it's not embellished. This is how I saw many grow up in Aotearoa.
The messages in this movie transcend being maori its a global message of in your face domestic poverty impacts, .. Domestic violence, Rape, youth suicide, Drug use and Alcoholism.

I felt bad for you both at the beginning when ya were laughing and happy, coz i knew what was to come. 😢
My guess is that you didn’t watch the whole movie to understand this scene, in the book that the mother read first than the father.
It was some sort of diary or journal, telling that this guy has rape drunken. Their daughter one night, which lead to her death later on in the movie.
Watch the movie from start to finish. An excellent movie, you need to understand each character’s roll.
this movie is great and sad and really touch on a lot of domestic and abusive and so much struggle of a family and the growth of them and is very raw on how real life is and how evil it can be but there is something more stronger then hate and evil and that is a mothers love it can over power anything
