I just got my violin today, and with your other video Played my 1st note!!!!! I’m super excited! I found a guy on RUclips 6 years ago and learned to play guitar with him. I’m 46 years old and love the guitar-- now I’m on this journey with the Violin 😃😀
I turned 65 years old two weeks ago. I decided to makes my dream come true,so I brought a violin 🎻 and here I am online in your class learning how to play this instrument.
This will be my practice tomorrow. I will let you know how I get on. One question I have is - what should initiate the bow movement, what feel should I try to imagine? For example is it the elbow, wrist or fingers that start the movement? Thank you for these lessons. They are just what I need to get me started. I hope you remain well.
@@sutters7251 Hi, It is a combination of all of these! Try not to overthink it at this stage, have fun swinging your bow arm. It should be a nice, free feeling.
Hi, greetings from Posadas, Misiones, northeast state of Argentina. Got a violin as a gift last year. I am a piano teacher from the last +25 years. Now learning to play violin. Thanks to you,!! Lovely lessons. Thank you very much. Blessings to you
It’s been many years since I’ve practiced. I made it about 1/3 through Suzuki book 1, and I’m finally ready to pick it up and practice again. I had a bad breakup and quit everything for many years and as a result I’ve forgotten most of what I’ve learned, however I’m excited to get back to it and to one day be able to play pieces I could only dream of! Happy to join any and all of you on your journeys! We can do this!
I have baught my first violin and your videos are so great that I sometimes forget that you are teaching it online. You always make me feel like you are my private teacher.
I love the pace of these. Such a good foundation. I don't remember doing this the first time I learned. I have a Suzuki book published in 1978. Is that ok?
Thank you so much for these lessons! I started learning the violin and for a few weeks, I am without a teacher, so I was looking for comprehensive lessons that would make me understand how to avoid tension and build good intonation. Your lessons fit me the best!! Thank you again.
Thank you so much for these lessons. I returned to playing after a 55 year hiatus and I’ve progressed, now playing in a community orchestra. Recently my young neighbor told me she wanted to play violin, so to help her get started I’m going to play your videos as they are so clear for a beginner and for an intermediate player (me). She’ll form good habits and I’ll be mindful to correct some of mine. I can’t thank you enough. I’ll let you know how we progress.
Hi Henrietta.. a long standing bowing problem got corrected in an instant by something you said about moving the bow hand forward! wonderful lessons and i look forward to going thru all of your lessons very soon! thanks so very much for these videos!
Really happy to have found this. Once upon a time I played well enough to be first chair second violin in high school. (I chose to stay in second violin because I have always enjoyed playing harmony.) Unfortunately I lost my violin in a burglary many years ago. I purchased a new one a few years ago, but rarely play because my technique and intonation is so off from lack of practice and I didn't know how to get it back (which put me off practicing!) Now a few more years passed, and I found a poor broken violin in an antique shop and purchased it because it was so interesting and unique. I didn't know if it could ever be made whole again, but a friend took it to a luthier friend of hers, and I just recently got it back. It's not only playable but it has a beautiful sound and I'm inspired to play it. So here I am, starting at the beginning in order to relearn proper technique which will hopefully improve my muscle memory and intonation. Two lessons in and I already feel like my bowing is stronger. Thank you.
I also was first chair and played in a regional orchestra. Out of frustration, from years of not playing, and feeling I was terrible at it, I gave my violin to a friend for her daughter to use at school. I recently got it back and am trying to get back to playing the way I used to. I'm new to my 're-learning' journey. I hope yours has gone well!
I have just ordered a violin and can't wait to start my lessons! I am really looking forward to this. I played a little for 2 years as a child. I've watched a couple of videos to get a feel for it and your teaching style is wonderful. I'll come back to give updates on my progress 😊
I’m so excited to find you here. I purchased a violin today, after many months (years) of dreaming about it, and have already enjoyed your first two days. I will force myself to practice a bit more before moving on!! About twelve years ago now I took lessons to accompany my 7 year old daughter as she began the Suzuki violin method - as was the requirement for parents at her school. Sadly, she (we) stopped after four years ... but I sorely wish we had not. (Maybe one day she will join me here again once her university studies are complete!) Thank you sooo much for this easy way to start anew!
This is brilliant...I’m also a Suzuki (piano & recorder) teacher. I’m doing Captain Tom’s 100 Challenge...recording 100 pieces from the repertoire of 9 Suzuki instruments. I’m only really competent on these 2 instruments so it is a big challenge for me. I know how many hours are really needed to learn an instrument so I have to condense this process in order to do the recordings. I did sit in on my children’s violin lessons many years ago and I did have a go but could never control the bow very well. This is so helpful. I may not get further than the Twinkles in the recordings as the violin needs much more than I can give at this time.
Thankyou for an excellent lesson . Some years ago l attended a group tuition , which was good , but doing it on line gives time to digest each lesson and stop and repeat the area if you wish . 🙏🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕💕

Any suggestions on how I can stop my pinky from coming off when I'm playing full bow? When my bow gets to the very tip, I find my pinky just doesn't stay on.
Hi Mariyam that happens in many people. It’s not the end of the world at this stage, but if you can ‘lean’ the hand ‘supinate’ towards your pinky, it may be easier to keep it on. The pinky does not do too much when you are playing at the point of the bow, but when you become more advanced, you will need to use your little finger, so it is a good habit to keep it on the bow if possible. Check out my Virtual violin practice playalong course in the next few days and I will show you . All the best from the UK!
Hi Henriette, I practiced day 1 and 2, I practiced for almost an hour and a half. Firstly I know I’m using muscles I have not used before! Positive points - my bow hold feels comfortable and relaxed. At times I felt that I might be holding too lightly. Is it ok for the pinkie to lift off slightly at full extension bowing at the tip of the bow? Or should I try to bend my fingers and stretch them out so the pinkie stays in place? It isn’t waving in the air but feels really light playing at the tip. I also made some nice sounds! I found the push forward tip really helped to keep the bow on line. When I was doing the elbow raising and lowering exercise I made scratchy sounds as the bow was sliding about! Definite doom for improvement. Oh and my strings seem to go out of tune quite quickly but they are brand new strings is this to be expected? All in all I really enjoyed the lesson and made nicer sounds than I expected to. I hope your well and thank you so much 😊
Hi, glad you enjoyed the lesson and got on so well. Pinky should be light on the bow when you play at the point, but not come off completely. New strings always stretch a little so tune frequently if you can. Have you found my how to tune a violin video? ruclips.net/video/jHszlVkHr6g/видео.html
Hi, thanks for your question, I am not doing anything in particular with my index finger of my right hand. I am trying to have it as loose as I can, so it does move a little with my other fingers. It should be as flexible as much as possible at this stage.
I am a first timer!! I am so excited to start learning and your videos seems like they are going to be so helpful! I’m curious, is there smaller bows or does that affect the way the instrument works?
ok. Have my brand new luthier made 7/8 violin (tiny hands, and this size fits me perfectly). Following along, and my first issue. The D string. Why is that one so hard to play on its own. The others flow naturally, the D wants to party with the other strings. The elbow lifts naturally, the bow hold, natural too, my fingers seem to want to do it that way anyway. Still the level of concentration required to get D to go solo....
Hi Helena, try bowing a little closer to the bridge. That may help. Do also check out my next live class, which will be held around Easter time, where I’ll be offering trouble shooting advice.
I finally got a channel that teach easily and simply from scratch

Hi, glad you enjoyed the lesson and got on so well. Pinky should be light on the bow when you play at the point, but not come off completely. New strings always stretch a little so tune frequently if you can. Have you found my how to tune a violin video? ruclips.net/video/jHszlVkHr6g/видео.html
I also see the bow hold but it's little tricky one! Could you help me with this?
Hi Madhvi, just keep going, the bow hold will be practised many times.😀
OK, thanks!
Is it better to practice standing up rather than sitting
Hi Patrick, good question! It is much better to play standing up than sitting. It helps posture, free bowing and left hand technique too.
RUclips Larssons att great!!
You are the best violin 🎻 teacher 👌🏼🌹
Wow, thank you!
I can see that your relax and tighten the index finger on your right hand.. What will that accomplish?
Hi, thanks for your question, I am not doing anything in particular with my index finger of my right hand. I am trying to have it as loose as I can, so it does move a little with my other fingers. It should be as flexible as much as possible at this stage.
Hello....I eventually want to play fiddle style and am wondering if it's a good idea to start out with the Suzuki method....
Hi Trudy, there are a lot of general techniques in the Suzuki course, which are useful whatever style of music you play.
@@violinclasses thanks so much!
Is it compulsory required of suzuki violin book for this virtual suzuki classes?
Hi, it is highly recommended to have the book! You will get the most out of this course if you can follow the sheet music.
@@violinclasses okay, thank you ma'am.
I am a first timer!! I am so excited to start learning and your videos seems like they are going to be so helpful! I’m curious, is there smaller bows or does that affect the way the instrument works?
Its very useful, you are amazing teacher!, you explain everything easily, love it!
Can you tell us the type of violin you are using in this lesson. Thank you.
