Will Simmons They were probably listening in Japanese translation in a ear piece. But even then I doubt the humour can even come accross right in Japanese
Ryan Levin, He’s referencing a joke that Chris Broad made in a video. Basically while teaching in Japan, he found an English textbook that said the phrase “Are you aware of your own defect?” was a polite greeting
Abroad in Japan is by far my favourite RUclips channel and by far the most underrated channel on RUclips. Everything about his videos down to the cinematography, script, information, humour and sarcasm makes Chris' channel so perfect. It pretty unique come to think of it. And Chris is just a really nice guy, on Twitter and Facebook he'll interact with fans, answering questions, talking in general. I feel weird saying this but I'm dead proud on how far he has come. And let us not forget the amazing man he brought into our lives, Natsuki. Well done Chris, there's only more things to come ❤
I always assumed Japanese people are relatively quiet during presentations as a sign of respect. Or at least that's how it's been explained to me before.
"It's a mid-sized channel, about 400k subs..." Man, watching this in 2021 and you now have 2M subs... I'm so proud to be part of that "first wave" of subscribers. Haha! Kudos Chris!!
I just passed my speech class in uni this semester. He used almost every method I learned in class on how to deliver a good speech. And it worked! Well done champ! Bravo!
In my experience, I tried to have a great attention grabber. I mostly followed the outline that was given just to make sure my professor gives me the points for a good grade. Speak towards the audience and not directly read your cue cards (a good handful of my classmates did that). At the end of the speech offer the audience a challenge. Say something that would help make your message relevant to your audience. One thing I should've done was to practice my speeches before speech day.
Chris combines a perfect mix of information, charm and humour in his videos. I was already set on working and living in Japan but watching Chris's videos has without a doubt erased the worry and self-doubt I once had and increased my confidence and excitement. Looking forward to the day I walk on Japanese soil! Thanks Chris!
I know it's getting old but... I wouldnt have watched this vid if i didnt see the thumbnail. Im like 'ISNT THT CHRIS BRoAD???' one swift clicked afterwards hahaha Well Done, Chris!
Ultimate flex. He has 2 million subscribers now and his production quality matches that of a TV show. But it’s his dry British humor that makes him so fun to watch.
He should be a teacher. A professor. OR a producer for BBC, OR one of the travel channel's here in the US. He should host whatever it is because he has charisma. He's good-looking. ( though smug.) Who wouldn't want to see him do an episode of Travel Man with Richard Aoyade?, Who? I'm just saying.
I kinda disagree. A lot of the things on bbc are produced, and there’s certain jokes you can’t make and things you can’t do. I think that the Chris part of Chris’ humour wouldn’t be there or as prominent, but I understand what you mean in the ways of production and getting Chris’ content seen by more people
Since I ''discovered'' the Chris's channel in early 2015 it's been my favourite channel on RUclips, I still haven't had the chance to go to Japan though but that time will come someday. Greetings from the Netherlands, it was fun seeing my country being up there on the screen!
Chris was my original and biggest inspiration for creating a RUclips channel. He really is the best at vlogging about Japan and I hope one day I can reach even just a small fraction of the audience he has attained.
I have to say, congrats on your presentation. It felt natural and you made the audience interested. Nice to see that vlogging actually impacts and you only need a camera and internet to do it. Nice job Chris, it was like a magic.
I remember seeing this around three years ago and being surprised that Chris had a TedTalk. It's still incredibly funny to me. Imagine the introduction with "Are you RUclipsr"
Chris, the thing I like most about your travel videos, is that you make them both intelligent and amusing. So many vloggers tell you almost nothing about Japan. Hopefully if I return to Japan, I will make an effort to visit Tohoku. Yet another reason for another trip. Thank you, Muffy from Australia
I can relate very much to what Chris is talking about. I never even considered going to Tohoku without RUclips. It's there that I found some of the best places I've ever seen. Tohoku is very much underrated!!
i am a dentist here in the philippines. but now and then i dream about leaving everything here and live in japan. it would be a dream come true. and your channel really makes me happy and inspired
Chris has inspired me to learn Japanese and to visit Japan, so there you go 😊 Nowadays I watch videos from many other vloggers living in Japan, but his videos were the first ones I watched, and I've been a loyal subscriber for more than 6 years.. Also looking forward to reading his first published book 🎉 Great presentation in here Chris!
Besides it being a coveted nerd holy land, Chris was the first influence that really made me want to travel to Japan. Had a fantastic time in 2016 and hope to do it again in the future.
I was not expecting to be recommended a video of Chris doing a Ted talk and I was also not expecting the video to start with the basic iMovie music everyone used to use on their videos 10 years ago.
I believe every single video of his has at least one person who just realised he based his channel name on a pun. I'm too lazy to verify, but it is a safe assumption.
RUclips = the world talking to the world. This is a definitively positive thing that I hadn't considered - as much online palaver seems wholly negative, people trying to be mean to each other under cover of anonymity. But of course this needn't be the only way we interact. I feel a bit of hope now, the internet as a friendly place, for learning and sharing. Thanks TedxTalks and Chris Broad.
I watched it the moment you posted on FB that it's already out. I love it! Even if I'm not living in Tohoku I'm truly encouraged to make a video that would make a difference. Keep it up Chris! My favorite vlogger. 🙂
This is actually the first time I'm seeing this video after being subbed to Chris for 2 years, and this is probably one of the best and most inspiring Ted Talks I've seen
This was a really inspiring talk. I'm glad I came across the Abroad in Japan channel a year or so ago, it's been one of my favorites ever since and you can feel that the person behind it really wants to tell all these stories. Passion is a beautiful thing!
Dang, I remember following him at 100k subs with about 10 or so vid uploads and really enjoying his funny sarcastic humor about moving to japan. Now he's at 2.2m subs and with a lot more varied content. Time flies. Like a magic!
Chris's channel is damn fun. highly recommend watching his channel for his witty sarcastic humor mixed with actually interesting content..I think. I dont know. he made stray island cats seem like interesting content, so might be more about his attitude than the actual content. Anyhow, its cool to watch in order to watch the growth. It'll make you want to check out Jp.
What took RUclips's algorithms so long to recommend this video!? An inspiring talk. It's amazing how, 3 years later, the AiJ channel has almost quadrupled the amount of subscribers (410K -> 1.52m) and almost has 5 times the views (38m -> 181m). Lots of hard work and dedication went into making this come true. I salute you, sir!
Crickets after the joke at 2:54 Hope there was a translator for Chris. I’ve been in front of some tough Japanese audiences but not even a giggle there is brutal. Highly underrated speech and congratulations on your ongoing success
The audience were actually laughing. It's just that the audio was set up in a way where you can barely hear the audience. If you listen closely you can actually catch them laughing very faintly in the background 2:48
Right chris..you told the very right thing. Before i came to Japan, one of my best places want to visit includes the cat island. And now i m in Japan and also at Tohoku but i never knew the cat island is exist very near me until i watched your video. I reviewed the tohoku regional guidebook when holidays near. but not so many amazing places found. but after viewing your channels i first knew Tohoku is amazing not only sendai, also yamagata, aomori, i knew more. really thank you. you r really amazing.
After seeing Chris' adventures with Ryotaro, Chris really should keep making videos with the intent of telling everyone he's still alive. But seriously, be safe guys
I am surprised at the lack of laughter from the audience, there are so many funny points that were smoothly woven in and any other audience would have loved it! It’s crazy to see how far Chris has come, congrats Chris!
Chris can make anything interesting. Such a fantastic speaker and presenter. This is probably why he's so successful - because he's relatable, down to earth, and doesn't take himself too seriously. Good humor and lightheartedness are key to making his message that much more enjoyable and fun - just like a good travel story or experience should be. As a Westerner, he's also very respectful and appreciative of the Japanese way of life, its people and its culture. I haven't once seen him take his success or his opportunity to make a living doing what he does for granted, or to show off or "flex" on his channel like some naive RUclipsr might. (This kinda goes without saying, but his style really lightens the vibe a bit and shows a different perspective on Japanese culture, since many people in Japan seem to take themselves very seriously and/or are extra shy introverts)
Thanks Chris for inviting people to try vlogging and to make videos! I definitely want to check out your channel and I do love Japan ^__^ Ted talks is so good I love how you guys bring in tons of different views from around the world!
I realize this video is old, but I'm going to Japan, and while I might spend most of my time in Tokyo, I will end up spending 9 days in Tohoku, and I hope to document most of it!

This video was Like A Magic.
It was JUSTICE GOOD.
It was amazing how this Britishman spoke with the mouth like Pitbull!

Ahegao-san natsuki!!

Ik it's a shame that the audience was almost entirely Japanese he should have done the speech in Japanese at least
Will Simmons They were probably listening in Japanese translation in a ear piece. But even then I doubt the humour can even come accross right in Japanese
Yeah Japanese have very different sense of humor than the classical British sarcasm and self-irony style.
Could be down to culture, translation or just the behavioural norm. You don't want to be rude to your peers in Japan.
I heard some laughter (for example at 2:49), but it's really faint. It could also be because of how the sound is set up.
his channel made me find my own defect
"it's not about what you do for a living, but what you make of it" is what it taught me
Ryan Levin, He’s referencing a joke that Chris Broad made in a video. Basically while teaching in Japan, he found an English textbook that said the phrase “Are you aware of your own defect?” was a polite greeting
