This was one of my favourite videos I've ever seen on this subject. It wasn't just really well explained, not only gave me a lightbulb moment of understanding how to use modes, but that backing track was such a vibe. The whole video had me vibing. Love love love.
This is a great video. I haven't watched the long version you put out yet. I always tell people my practice routine is to watch a Mode video on You Tube, then punch a whole in the wall and then jam to the same backing track I use every night for 10 minutes. This clears up a lot of things.
I really think the pentatonic is very musical but everything inspires different notes and licks ... I think it's really important to know the Pentatonic musically ... There are people who only play the natural scale and I think it sounds bad. But I like that the natural scale is such a shreddy fast scale because of the way it's played and fingered ... And you can always add the notes in ... Which is in general I think I a better idea just because you need something to go between scales and pentatonic is perfect for that and easy to hear scale changes in as well.
I also practice modes in G ... I liked how you said you liked that hang out where it resolves to hear the G - ness. I practice ionian Dorian to lydian then mixolydian sometimes I see them as just 1 2 3 4 and sometimes 5 ... Then I play the aeolian because it's the minor Pentatonic to me. And I don't play the last one yet. I don't know why. If I go to the 7 I will sometimes play the diminished scale ... Or a pentatonic I have never played a natural scale over a 7. I didn't see the pentatonic part ... I was looking for it I just work my way up the neck though if you're talking about modes. I usually just do them thinking numbers. And I usually just do 1-4 then aeolian. And I usually skip mixolydian and the 7 but I will just play pentatonic or diminished scale over a 7 chord anyway I wouldn't play a 7 ... But I do need the 7 position. I just don't practice it. And I should.
I legit don't even know the names of but a few of the modes ... I just practice in different positions and I find it easy and intuitive to repeat the natural major / minor pattern. Sometimes I know the name of the mode. Other times I just know the number of the position. I know Dorian mode. I do tend to play the Pentatonic a lot as a reference but Dorian is a natural major mode and I practice it of course. The natural major modes are good for practicing in general as they are fast and shreddy and good for exercises in the brain and fingers, right 👍
Best lesson on modes I ever saw.
Finally - a clear concise explanation that makes sense and is fun and funky!
