How & why of total US backing for Israel. As war rages, evidence from 7 June 1981 to this week

Why has the US emerged as a staunch supporter of Israel amid its much-condemned offensive on Gaza, which followed the Hamas’ 7 October terror attack? Washington has voted against a UN General Assembly resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire, even as several allies voted for or abstained, and also vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for the same. In Ep 1343 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta dives into the history of US-Israel ties to explain how & why they got so close, and bust some popular conspiracy theories.

Both the political parties in the USA are aligned with AIPAC and other Jewish and Military Industrial Complex lobbies. Their support is predominant for both the political parties. In the process, the members of Congress have got an unwritten constitutional allegiance to the state of Israel, and thus, America has become Second to Israeli national interests to the U.S political personalities.

First of all, I'm glad that someone took the discussion beyond lobbying.
Just to add, I think the Yom kippur war in 1973 was a landmark in US-Isreal relations as well as for global politics. Arriving on the heels of an unpopular Vietnam war, a reportedly antisemite US president Richard Nixon threw his full support behind Israel. The oil embargo that followed changed the global automobile industry. For the first time the concept of fuel efficient cars came into being. Inflation skyrocketed in the US, followed by the hawkish era of Paul walker. That decade solidified US-ISREAL relations further.
The Trump administration was indeed the most pro Israel administration. They also pulled back their own membership from UNHRC because of what they considered as an anti-Israel bias. Biden came back to UNHRC but the complaint remains as it was.

Given that they had so much issue electing a speaker for 3 weeks , this was one of their first votes under the new speaker. This shows the support Israel enjoys in US congress even when so many domestic problems came only next to Israel. The spending bill is still a lower priority.

In 1948 the territory was divided between Palestine and Israel, Israel accepted what they offered but the next day 6 Arab countries attacked Israel, and since then every time Israel gives territory or agrees to an agreement they refrain from war and in every war against Israel, Israel conquers more and more territory. Israel no longer controls Gaza for more than 10 years and what came of it they launched an attack against Israel on 7/10/23. Israeli Arabs have all the rights, they do not want to live under Palestinian rule, 99% want to be Israelis. There are Arab members of parliament in Israel, judges and even in the Supreme Court, doctors, even in the Israeli army.
All the Arabs, including those with whom Israel has a peace agreement, would like to erase Israel.
But in the jungle there are rules of the jungle, only the strong survive.
Another note, until 1948 there was no Palestinian people, and there weren't many Arabs either, Mark Twain wrote this long before all the Jews started coming to their homeland. The Arabs started to come to Israel after the Jews started to come and build the country, by their surnames you can tell where they came from, for example surname Almasri and they came from Egypt and the majority are like that.

They did not take the land. They were approved as immigrants by Ottoman and then by British. UN proposed having 2 states: 1 for Jews and 1 for arabs. Jews accepted, Arabs did not. Therefore, you have State of Israel but not state for Palestine. Palestine was under Ottoman and then British that time.

I wonder why there's no discussion in the Indian media about the recent exodus of over 100,000 ethnic Armenians from Azerbaijan, who have been living in the Karabakh region for centuries. Faced with threats of genocide and ethnic cleansing by Azerbaijan, they have moved to Armenia. International experts describe it as a war crime or a crime against humanity. When it comes to US support for Isrea, I would say, it seems logical that the U.S. supports Israel; otherwise, Jews may cease to exist. Throughout history, various groups and individuals have targeted Jews with the intent to eliminate them. Holocaust, Pogroms in Russia and E Europe in 19th and 20th centuries, 15th century spanish inquisition, expulsions from England (1290), Spain and Portugal (1400's), among others. Now various anti-Semitic movements and ideologies have emerged over the years, promoting hatred and discrimination against Jews. Now, there are just 7 million people in Israel, their only state, and yet more than 20% of the population consists of Arabs living with them. It is funny to hear some Arabs in Israel complain that they do not have equal rights to Jews in Israel. Such an amazing community, which is relatively small in number, but they excel in innovations across various fields. They provided assistance to India during the Bangladesh war and continue to help countries across the world, even those that have historically held negative sentiments toward them, in solving complex problems. However, there are multiple nations that would like to see them eliminated from the face of the earth. It is just incomprehensible to me. The logical approach in Gaza is to separate terrorists from the population. Israel should implement a series of pauses to allow for humanitarian relief, among other things. A ceasefire may not be the best solution. Just this week, Hamas indicated that they would repeat October 7th 100 tmes, if it would lead to the elimination of Israel. Ultimately, after the conflict, and once the terrorists are no longer a threat, it may be best for an Arab-led coalition to administer the region, rather than the U.S. or Israel. When folks refer to the area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, which includes Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, advocating for one nation for Jews and Arabs with equal rights, they believe that over time, ........ Here is the reality: if Israel puts the guns down tomorrow, there will be a second Holocaust.

I am grateful to this well thought out accurate reply. I believe Israel has urgent resupplied India in TWO of its wars. Israel help found & train the Singapore amed forces. Once establishedIsrael proves to be a trusted reliable friend & ally. India knows this well and so does Azerbaijan in recent years.
In this conflict in Gaza the Western Democracies have woken up and had to take note that they have allowed virtually unrestricted migration of millions of muslim immigrants who have created, let's say, not well integrated lives in these countries. These people have the vote and can sway elections. So despite just support for Israel they still pander to these huge minorities. Even the London Metropolitan Police has gone out of its way to allow very hostile anti Israel/antisemetic marches each Saturday involving around 300,000
This has not gone unnoticed by the, say, native general public who feel threatened by these people who have different values & cultures which conflict.
Briefly the result of these demographic changes are already having effects.
Right wing governments are emerging fast even in unexpected countries. The East of Europe resolutely refuses muslim in order to preserve the claimed valuesi immigration

While this episode sheds light on the history of US-Israel relations, I'm curious about the implications of an outright support from US to Israel this time. Saudi and US have been frosty for some time now. And China has been able to pull some strings with both the Saudis and Iran. Had US resisted a strong response from Israelis against Hamas, it would have mended US -Saudi ties and stabilized the region a little. Instead, US chose to strongly back Israel and send more aid and weaponry. So, what is the logic behind US's actions? Would this not push Saudis further into Chinese and Russian hands? Is US convinced that Hamas and Palestine are more of Iran's problems than a larger Arab world's?

There is actually a way that this backing for Israel reinforces U.S./Saudi relations. The U.S. and Israel are working on a normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. As a part of these negotiations, Saudi Arabia wants an enhanced security alliance with the U.S. So, by backing Israel in their fight against Hamas, the U.S. is also demonstrating their commitment to allies, and demonstrating to the Saudis the value of this enhanced U.S. alliance they want. Before 1948, Palestine was home to a diverse population of Arabs, Jews, and Christians, as all groups had religious ties to the area, especially the city of Jerusalem. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all strongly tied to the region of old Palestine, and trace origins to the land over the past few thousand years. Following the 1918 fall of the Ottoman Empire during World War I, Palestine typically referred to the region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.
The main cultural and linguistic heritage of old Palestine was a blend of both Arabic elements and the foreign cultures that have come to rule the land and its people over the course of thousands of years. Early humans arrived in the Fertile Crescent and Palestine about 500,000 years ago. Settled life there began between 12,500 and 9,500 BCE, when the semi-sedentary Natufian culture (named after Wadi Natuf, west of Ramallah) developed. Palestine has a long and vast history. First documented in ancient Egyptian tablets as Peleset over 3000 years ago, the region between the Mediterranean and the river Jordan has come to mean many different things to many different peoples.
Before 1948, Palestine was home to a diverse population of Arabs, Jews, and Christians, as all groups had religious ties to the area, especially the city of Jerusalem. Amen

The first Americans (if you could call them that), came to get away from the socio-eco-religious challenges in Europe. Wars always define ourselves. Their battles against the monarchist British, with French help, forge a secular nation with a Christian undertone. Many of the other wars the US fought were to uphold democracy and hence its status quo. The fall of Israel (amid undemocratic leaders), India and or Taiwan would challenge the status quo of the US.

There are a lot of historical, political and strategic factors that explain the US backing for Israel. The US during the cold war was searching for allies in the volatile West Asia. Washington's best bet was Iran until 1979 when Islamists took over Tehran. Washington was not able to fully trust the monarchs and dictators because of their whims, fancies and suspicions about everything. On the other hand Israel was a democracy which would have provided better stability. During its wars with Arab neighbours it has demonstrated its hard power which impressed the White House and policy makers in the US. So,the US decided to improve its relations with Tel Aviv. Secondly, there is a substantial segment of avangenical christians in the US which believes Jews have the blessings of Jesus Christ. Political establishment due to the lure of electoral gains backs Israel no matter how immoral, unethical and brutal it may seem. Third, the US wants to have an eye on West Asia and which nation apart from Israel has a better intelligence network in the region due to its technological, economic prowess and political clarity. Israel is also termed by many commentators as the "Strategic launchpad" for the US.

Besides the policy decisions the american government makes in favor of Israel, there seems to be a broad support for Israel amongst the american public. I think there is theological underpinning to this support. US government was quite anti-semitic during world war II. Famously they turned a ship carrying jewish refugees from Germany during the 30s.

Some things still don't make sense - why is it that at least half the US states have made criticism of Israel illegal. Also, how has the US gotten away with not calling out the Apartheid nature of Israel?

    • @IslamicMuhammadIsPedophile

    • @IslamicMuhammadIsPedophile

Because Israel is not an ordinary country, its home to Jews, the most persecuted ethnic group of Western world for thousand of years. The pioneer Jews who migrated to Ottoman and British Mandate of Palestine were persecuted Jews running away from pogroms, holocaust etc. There is a very thin line between anti-Israel and anti-semitism. You can't criticize Israel without being anti-semitic/anti-Jews. Also, there are many Jews in America, they are in the government and they are some of the wealthiest Americans. US has also the largest christian population so they tend to sympathize with Israel than Muslims. Muslims are anti-American and anti-Jews and anti-christians so why would majority christian country support Palestine? Republican party and even Democratic party sometimes are very sympathetic toward Israel. Its like Muslim countries, they sympathize with Palestinians and most christians sympathize with Israel.

The most charitable comment I can make about Sekhar’s discourse is that in the land of the Blind ( I,e. India ) the One eyed is the King. Balfour Declaration was a Dirty Deal and led to rise of Hitler & WW II. The US did n’t back Israel till the 1960s and Israel had to smuggle in French weapons like the Mirages. US support for Israel became massive only after the Jew Kissinger became Sec of State.Since the 1970s US Jews have followed a strategy of intimidating politicians who did n’t automatically support Israel.

An attempt to differentiate between anti-semitism and anti-zionism also would have explained why a large sector of jewish population in America is against zionist nationalism that Israel has been marketing for the last 75 years. I am sorry to say this Mr. Gupta but this "cut the clutter" was more of increase the clutter, wherein the cutting of clutter should have said in a chronological order, that the British and French people colonised and divided the remnants of the ottoman empire with the British keeping the area of Egypt and Palestine to control the Suez and the trade there and the gulf of Persia as there was oil there which the British wanted and left the French the rest of the area. And when the time came according to the "Old Testament" which ordained the Jews land in the levant which was Palestine, as the British owned the land, the parliament was lobbied by Mr. Rothschild(who was a lord whose name you would see in the letter written to him by Mr. Balfour at 13:22) to grant him that land. So in short the rich Jewish bankers in England and the US lobbied for this land that is to be blunt bought it from the British. And the British sold it to them under the Pretext of the Jews "deserving" it. On what basis did they deserve it? So still most banks in the US and UK have Jewish people in their directorial positions who lobby for whatever they want from the US congressional members.(if you do not Know what Lobbying is dear reader then please google it) This is the real reason why the US does not go against Israel. Main investors and lobbyists in form of banks in the US are in Jewish hands. Consider this too, after the 2008 subprime crisis in which 500 banks were involved only the directors and top brass of 1 bank were prosecuted, only one who were christians, the top brass of all other 499 banks were mainly Jewish who earned millions of dollars were never prosecuted still are not.(even the one 'Lehman Bros' which went bankrupt were never prosecuted and fled with millions) You can understand the money might they possess, they sought and were approved with 800 billon dollars worth of help of taxpayers money from the Federal govt after the crash to recuperate the situation. Its horrifying!
