Perfect Shepherd's/Cottage Pie That Anyone Can Make

- So to me, homemade shepherds pie is technically a casserole rather than a pie but that’s beside the point. Now, this is technically a cottage pie rather than a shepherd's pie since we're using beef here. Should you want it traditional you'll just use ground lamb in place of the beef.

Right my bad I forgot to mention that lamb is traditional for shepherds pie. But I have incredibly good news for you though, feel free to switch the beef for lamb if you want a truly traditional shepherds pie. Thank u, papa love u.
be prepared for all of the UK to call you out on this it's one of our favourite things to do
Josh, retitle this video to cottage pie please. Lamb = shepherd, beef = cottage. They are different dishes.
if you dont use lamb then its cottage pie, fair warning that all of rural england may hunt you down for mistaking the two
Haiya! The beefy version is called Cottage Pie, Shepherd's Pie is lamb. Even Uncle Rogers knows this.
A shepherd for cows is a cowboy, so let'scall it cowboy pie..... or CowPie for short.
I came for the "if it's beef it's called cottage pie" comments, and I am not disappointed.

Shepherd's pie: lamb

As a recovering alcoholic, thank you!!! Tired of hearing, "Just use the wine you have for deglazing." Good lookin' out 👍
I wish you the best of luck on your journey of recovering from alcoholism
Yes! Same here! I hate having to Google what the alternative is and hope it works for the recipe.
@@devinroberts9323 deglazing can be done with any liquid, no need to look for an alternative to wine, just use stock or water seasoned with the same stuff as the dish :)
I find unsweetened grape juice a good alternative to wine. Just blend grapes with a cup of water and about half a lemon, sift, and you're good to go.
For some added acidity, you can always add more lemon juice or the vinegar of your choice.
Good luck on your journey!
@@devinroberts9323 I've also used cranberry juice instead of wine 🍷 😊
I already cooked it twice, my wife & I can confirm: it's delicious 😋

Thank you!
Better if you put the meat in before the beef stock, it takes longer to reduce the sauce but the whole thing is a bit more savory that way.
Just made it myself, the reviews from the family are outstanding. Great recipe!

Another thing: Ditch the cheesy topping mix 2 egg yolks into the mash, spike the potato and it goes crispier. Also no peas in the filling, peas go on the side or they go mushy. Hate when yanks put peas in the filling
In Brazil we have a dish that has a very simmilar preparation but the ingredients are somewhat different: we used mashed cassava instead of potatoes, our filling is made with beef jerky and onions and we use grated cheese curds on top. Also, we add a healthy amount of "manteiga de garrafa" (clarified butter) on top before eating.
Sounds like great modifications. Obrigado

Two tips: a) always dry the potatoes after mashing them on low heat for about 1-2 minutes or until perfectly dry. Only then you can add the butter or milk. b) Never mix frozen stuff before washing them. Washing them with warm water will remove the icy aroma of frozen food in your meal.

And by anyone he means anyone with tons of special and expensive equipment. Classic Josh
?
I made this shepherds pie (minor modifications, ie: who the F has creme fraiche at home? Gordon Ramsay maybe) and honestly I'd give it an 9/10. It was quite delicious! The filling was exceptional but personally i'd add 1/2 cup of corn in there too, just a little bit of a sweeter pop than peas and adds a nice colour. I found that gruyere finely grated into the mash gave it this richness that milk and butter can't immitate, absolutely wonderful! I like the meat and potato taste of shepherds pie and the cheese ontop, in prticular the parm, was a little overwhelming but if you love parm then follow this recipe exactly as in the video.
Tips for others making this. Start prep and cooking about 1.5-2 hours before you want to eat. It's a lot of chopping and multitasking and the 20 minute rest totally makes a difference. It's still warm and comforting but holds together much better! If you don't grind your own meat (Papa please forgive) just use kitchen sheers, not a knife, to cut that bacon up very finely before mixing it into the beef. I had to ask specifically for gruyere at the grocer, it had a creamy and mild salty flavour kinda like swiss cheese if you can't find at your grocer. This is the perfect cheese for finely grating into your mash!
Not exactly a week night meal but definitely on my short list for weekend dinners with fam and friends.
FYI: Josh, the recipe on your website calls for parm in the mash not gruyere. Thanks so much for helping us make this beauty of a dish!
I don’t even cook like this but watching your videos instead of tik tok is so much better for my mental health
This is almost the exact recipe I use when making Shepard's pie! Your potatoes look much better though, I'll have to get a potato ricer. Shepard's pie is the 👌 dish for the cold months, love the videos!
tip: stick your beef ( and your grinder attachment) in the freezer for about 15 minutes before grinding for better texture in your end product
Made it last night, Josh. Was fantastic. Thank you!
Super easy and the taste is amazing! Thank you, papa!!
I know this changes things a bit but my family really likes it when I put a layer of puff pastry at the bottom of the pan with a thick layer of ducel aka dried out mushroom & hazelnut puree. It stops the shepherd's pie from being too wet but not losing its moisture
