One of my very favorite pieces of classical music, filled with delightful and intelligent melody. Repetitious as was the custom, but in this case not tediously so. I grew up with music like this, along with the equally delightful music of the Baroque period.
Matthew H. Haydn wrote this work for Prince Esterhazy's troops. It was scored for two oboes, two horns, three bassoons, and a serpent (a kind of bass horn, now obsolete).
