Agreed. I only buy Robertson (square) drive screws, that also have phillips slots that allow either driver to be used. They also "hold" to the bit when you need to drive them in odd angles/positions. Torx are too finicky IMHO... too many sizes to keep track of and bits on-hand. You only need S1 and S2... mostly S2 for all square drive bits.
The other "virtue" of Robertson is that nearly all of the woodworking screws are R2 (although they make 0,1,2,3 as common sizes. Kreg likes square drive.
Fantastic discussion my friend. A few years ago I went to a hundred percent stainless steel. Thus, #1 square tip finish screws with the small head, yet do shift toward T25 for exterior rough carpentry, when nature calls for this application.
This video should be required viewing for anyone that's ever used a screw driver or a drill. Goodness, I learned a lot from this.... I've also been switching to torx screws. It's nice needing only 1 bit, and not stripping out 3/4 of every screw head.
I buy only Torx these days, but I've not gone full-Sedge and given away everything else. Lotsa pocket screws I gotta use up! Also, I haven't found Torx screws in all the sizes I need. Thank gosh for driver-mounted bit holder. Really helpful stuff, guys, especially the Phillips v. Pozidriv segment.
Great intel!! I have Torx Screwdrivers, mostly for my Festool Tools... Especially to change Router Bases. Have to say that 75% of the time, am using Square Drive.
For slotted drives, get a set of decent hollow ground bits or screw drivers. They will not cam out nearly as easily. Always good to have when working on old cabinetry, old stuff in general.
Square drive cams out pretty easily, not as bad as phillips though. The Kreg screws are absolute garbage in that respect. Also the square drive tips get stuck in the screw a lot, because the screw head deforms, even before it cams out fully.
Great video. The big bit set is great (and there are more types than any one set will cover if you get into the tamper proof stuff). And buy good, impact rated Torx bits for you everyday users, I assume Festool is good but Milwaukee, Makita, and DeWalt, also good, the ones that come with the screws are "gaabage", they often do not even fit the screw heads and wear out quickly. I tried to drive some the other day and the bit would not fit, si I grabbed a Milwaukee T15 and it shore enough did fit and work. Just a duffer, Sedge, but I like to buy and use the good stuff. Apple Mac computers used to use T15 for cases and now use T6 and T8 for innards. And you missed one type of crosspoint, the JIS (Japan Industry Standard) which is an Asian take on Posidrive but of course different, still popular with camera makers, used to find them on Asian Motorcycles, too. And some modern lag screws use an 8 point driver bit instead of 6-point, because of course they do. Great video (I might have said that already).
Same, though as I run out of a particular size of square drive, I've been replacing them with spax. Eventually I'll only have spax and pocket screws in my shop.
Spax user here. Square/Robertson head on woodworking screws. Torx on larger construction screws. Spax woodworking screws are also self counter-sinking. Good tip (pun intended ;-) )
Those bit sets have bailed me out more times than I can count, if I used it once it’d be worth the price. Probably the same bit set minus the driver at Harbor Freight for $9.99. Torx are definitely the way to go but all of the pocket screws seem to be in only Robinson aka square drive I’ve used Torx sizes from T7 to T70 (light trucks)
I just started on the torx journey last month after being frustrated with cam outs.. very helpful video as I thought I was being crazy discarding all the stuff to normalize on one system 😂 I have a question - do you see using the torx screws for drawer pulls, hinges etc as well?
Sedge please make your guidance video on selecting type of vehicle use in skill people day to day life, means pick up truck or van ? What you use ? And best setting for moving tools box and storing them. 🙏 In India we need to learn this yet.
I see those torx security screws used on bathroom stalls. I guess construction guys liked to take stalls apart while sitting there with their tool belts. 😂
I love Torx. I just wish they would eliminate 25. Go from 10 to 15 to 20 and then 30. There comes a point when it just isn’t necessary to add all these sub increments. It gets frustrating
Some other remakes I mentioned before aswell. Your shutter speed or frame rate, there is some mismatch, your videos are always stutters. Just a moniror remark, your mics might be placed to high, you might talk over your mic and you might want to place them a bit lower so your voice isn’t going over the mic
So funny to see that America is so many years behind on western Europe. Most is torx here fore many many years now. Square, was populair here about 15y ago with electricians. Now you see them rarely.
Haven't watched the whole 13 minute video yet for a simple workshop tip. Love Torx screws. Do they make Torx heads for pocket screws? I think they would be better than square head.
I bought a bunch of GRK screws because of all the RUclips hype. The McFeeleys square drive screws I was already using are way better and less frustrating to use. Stop using 1" (25mm) bits with magnetic holders. You know, the ones that Festool likes to give in their drills and bit sets. Magnetic bit holders suck!
When buying torx screws, do check which size torx is needed. Having to change torx-size is just as annoying as having to change bit-type. t20 for normal (furniture) screws (ø 3,5 / 4.0 / 4,5mm) is my first pick (though I started with one brand using t15, which was annoying since the majority appeared to be using t20. t25 (or t30) for construction (ø 5,0 / 6,0mm). I'm buying different brands screws, since I prefer to use t20 the most (when brands use t15 for 3,5mm or t25 for 4,5mm, I skip those)
Point of fact. Torx do not remove if they rust at all. Secondly different manufactures have different torx sizes for the same t2 screw. This is enormously frustrating. I have three different t2 bits. I have to check each time to make sure I use the one that fits the screw best. Once the screw strips your screwed and have to drill the head off. Best tool tip for removing screws. Do not use a power tool to break it loose. More often than not you will “cam” it if you do. Short stubby screwdrivers work great.
I like the torques, but I’m in love with the square heads no tear out, no rounding over my money they’re the best
Canuck
cool

Bought a bunch of quick screws based on your recommendation from a previous video. Did not disappoint. Thanks Sedge
Glad you liked them....

Thanks

cool ... Thanks
In Germany we mainly use a Würth Assy screws and bit tips on professional jobsites. It's a tapered version of Torx and is the best for one handed use.
I like those as well
Nice, see you guys next month.
Woooooohooooooo!!! Going to be EpIc !!
For slotted drives, get a set of decent hollow ground bits or screw drivers. They will not cam out nearly as easily. Always good to have when working on old cabinetry, old stuff in general.
cool
where can i find torx that are less than 1"? Dont see any on quick screws.
I do not know.....
In EU pozidriv is ubiquitous. The good thing is PZ2 fits 3.5 to 5mm screws so you rarely need to swap bits, unlike torx.
cool
Oh man torx rules …I turned a co worker on to GRKs..btw I tried the round over trick you showed with the HL850 …awesome trick!
Right on!
Philipp has build in torque limiting by the cam out, for pozidrive and tox you need to set the clutch on the drill to not break the driver bits.
True
Good info, thanks. However I still cannot see the advantage over the square drive. Cheers, Peter

ok
Those bit kits are at hobo freight
That't a good one..I never heard "Hobo Freight "....
@@sedgetool it’s the nickname for Harbor Freight! Thanks for all you do!

HOLY FESTOOL
Yes Batman...
My screw of choice Spax German engineering and made in Germany and USA.
ok
The torx is great but I have thousands of square drive screws as well as pocket hole screws and can just not throw em out.
I gave almost of mine away to convert … it was tough
Same, though as I run out of a particular size of square drive, I've been replacing them with spax. Eventually I'll only have spax and pocket screws in my shop.

Interesting Thread!@@sedgetool
Hehehe already only used T20 for many years now! 💪🏼
Nice!
I switched over a month ago - but kept my pozi drive’s for making jigs and temporary stuff after all “waste not want not”😅
awesome

I will probably stick with the hinge screws that come with the hardware.....I think the hardware manufacturers should switch to Torx...

@@sedgetool Thanks sir.
Robertson...?😊
Ok
All I can find is Phillips for smaller screws. #4, #2.
ok
3mm Torx screws are actually using T10 most of the time.
Cool … Thanks !!!
3,5mm diamater in stainless is probably going to be a t15 bit
Philips screws are designed to cam out to minimize over torquing.
Cool

School kids love to try to take stalls apart !!
Torx are best.

Looks like Sedge has been hitting the weights lately
Always lifting ….Thanks

Torx for the win !!!!
