"Tank Talk" I like it. Big Lou has got some of the best pics and his tank is second to none. Thanks for the shout John. Glad you liked and are using the pics. I like the fish formula. Good advice. My tank is def over stocked and yes you need to keep up with the maintenance. The aggression is the best Ive had but the nitrates will jump off the chart fast. 27.5.lol. its all good.

I have 10 peacocks in a 36 gal bow front all about 3inches. 6 months in all is well. The tank is over filtered and weekly 60% water changes. I only feed them every other day, and keep a open tank so there's no caves to fight over. Like you said they may dart at one another on occasions but so far all is well. I will be getting a 110 tall in the next couple of weeks. Super videos and love all the info. IM HOOKED!!!

If you use Haps and Peacocks you will have less aggression and will not have to stock as heavily as with Mbuna. In my opinion stocking heavily with exceptional specimens takes away from the individual beauty of fish like Haps and Peacocks. Most people don't want to do a lot of water changes, so I would suggest going with Haps and Peacocks. I have 43 fish in a 400 gallon tank and it looks well stocked.

I had a guy at a LFS who has a aquarium maintenance business on the side say that if you have fish hiding in the corner to avoid being picked on or a bully fish in your tank, it is a sign that the tank in under stocked. I have 25 in my 125 gal tank now instead of 12. Based on your formula I'd have to up some to 1.5 and 2's based on their size.

Very informative video. I find higher fish populations are mostly a combo of compatibility like "all-peacock tanks" and fresh water chemistry. I breed peacock’s at home and here’s how I populate my tanks. After stripping eggs to sunny tumbler’s for 2-3 weeks in 80 degree water, I release them in full sun, nearly bare 40 gal breeder tanks with algae (they like algae and real plants very early in their diets) at 80 degrees to promote growth on brine fish eggs and natural plants. Bright sunshine promotes natural colors. Soon, I change to crunched up Cichlid Crisps. I’ve had over a hundred in the 40 gal tanks. At 1 “, all 100 or so are moved to a 72 gal. placed in in-direct sunlight. Now, they’re about a 2” average and doing great. The decorations in the 72 are kept at a minimum to make weekly cleanings of the tank easier. A very light layer of cichlid gravel with patches of floor glass showing, a few smooth river rocks, and a weighted plant can be cleaned quickly without aquarium waste hiding below or inside decorations (especially inside too much gravel). I use RENA Filstar with a extra interior fan pump over a airstone in the 72. If they’re overfed between weekly tank cleanings, I’ll add about 1/3rd to 1/2 the regular dose of Prime to clear up ammonia mid-week between water changes. I change 75% of the water weekly, clean the filter and glass. A couple hours after sunset, I turn off the lights to closely mimic natural day/night cycles. Cichlid Crisps can be broken into smaller pieces and are a good food choice to keep tanks clean. This dense population may seem counter-intuitive. Consider in the wild, they constantly have the 24 hour threat of predator’s after them, environmental water changes, and compete with everything for very limited cover and natural food sources. I donate extra’s to a locally owned fish store who stocked a show tank with my peacocks and sell others. My apology to anyone for the lengthy post. We have a 180 gallon
So far, we have lake Malawi peacocks and haps (I think). 17 currently
    1. Is it ok to add mbunas?
    2. Are there any other tank mates I can add (bushynose pleco/clown coach/etc)
    3. By your formula, I come up with 90
If I go by your advise, I did haps counted as 3 and peacocks counted as 2(I hope that's appropriate). Does that seem right?
    4. Is it better to have just sand and a few rocks, or sand, rocks, driftwood, and plants (fake)?
I'm sorry for the newb questions

This actually worked out great for me :) I just happen to have a 65gal and was wondering how many I could handle in the tank. So I'm thinking 25-30 will be my max depending on size. Some of the cichlids that I am looking at are species 44, yellow lab, Grensheki, super orange top hongis, Eurek Red's, Sulphurs, Dragonbloods. I live in Canada and I have a local breeder just a few doors down. I don't know all their full names yet (if that is not it). I just started and want to learn all I can before jumping into it. Mind you I did already get the size of tank that my room could handle.

So I can keep 50 mbuna in a 100gal aquarium, as per your recommendations. And a large hap should be considered the equivalent of two mbuna you say? Then I can stock 25 large venustus in a 100gal based on your math, right? It's funny because a 10inch venustus is about 300grams while a 5inch average mbuna is about 30g, 10 times the difference in weight.

I have a 29 cichlid tank going right now. Yellow lab, demasoni, red, cobalt, albino zebras. And 2 peacocks. Tank is fine. Some say oh a 29 is crazy for that. When you see it in person it's not bad. I also have a 60 going as well.

    • @Tim.Hammer
      @Tim.Hammer 4 года назад

Yeah, the internet is pretty divided on this. I read all over the place on official spec sheets that 29 gallon is acceptable, but then most of the comments on discussions insist "NO! 55 MINIMUM OR IT'S ANIMAL ABUSE! WHAA!" I've come to the conclusion that a person should use their common sense and do what works. I'd definitely be careful when it comes to overstocking in a 29 gallon, but I'm not going to get up on a soap box about it and try to prove all my superior knowledge like so many people. A good share of this is just ego - I don't think they realize how off-putting and degrading that is to other hobbyists... And to be frank, overstocking to reduce aggression is LITERALLY the same thing as stressing your fish out for aesthetic purposes anyway - so to suggest that it's ok to intentionally stress your fish out in a crowded tank 24/7 to reduce aggression is a good thing, then in the same breath to suggest that stressing that same fish out with a bit smaller of a home is "totally unacceptable," seems hypocritical to me. Either way, you're forcing your fish into an unwilling, unnatural mental state that makes YOU happy, not the fish. So, I just do what seems to work, using common sense. And honestly, if you're doing something really wrong with your fish, you'll know, because there will be incidents - that is part of learning. Most of the cockier hobbyists would deny all the fish that have died in their care (or just lived miserable lives). We all care about our fish.

I've got a plan to set up my soon-to-be custom 150 gallon african cichlid tank. I don't have the stock list set, but I want to try some Mbunas with maybe some smaller Malawis. The tank is being professionally designed and aquascaped with a ton of rockwork. That in mind, what kind of numbers could I do to keep aggression curbed without having them too cramped with all the rocks in there? I keep South and Central American cichlids, so this will be my first African cichlid tank.

And I’ve read an even more conservative 2” per gallon. If my fish average 5 inches at maturity, that means 7-8 cichlids, 15 max @ 1”/gal in my 75 gallon tank. Plus, wouldn’t it be wise to subtract for rock, driftwood, and plants? I’m new to African Cichlids, so please correct me if my info, thinking, or math is off.

cichlids that stay about 5 inches yes I agree with that rule whereas ones that get to be about 10 - 16 inches I would just recommend 1 per every 10 gallon it cuts down on maintenance while leaving the fish plenty of recreation room

  • @Traymac
    @Traymac 7 лет назад

With enough filtration you can add as many as you want if you have a big tank I have 130+ in my 125 since I broke 100 I have not had any deaths aggression related I do one 90% water change once a week I run three canister filters one aqua clear 110 and a sump 40 gallon....... in my opinion I think overstocking is the best way to go with these fish everyone I know that overstocks never has an issue if you have the time to maintain it then do it if not then don't but everyone has different experiences that just what worked for me and a few people I know..

You think I can get by putting a couple around 4 inch algae eaters without the cichlids being aggressive towards them?

    • @CaptainWoodyThePirate

Well since 1 peacock counts as 1.5 fish in this equation, that would mean you would do 25/1.5= 16.6 *or...*
      *17 Peacock Cichlids in a 50 Gallon.*

I have a 65 gallon with an Oscar who is getting old. He's nine this year so now I'm starting to plan for the long run as to what I want to do with the tank once he passes. 33? that just blew my mind.

Every video I see on cichlids say you need a minimum of a 55 gallon tank. But what I noticed is all those tanks have about 20 cichlids and there all pretty big. I’m trying to see if it’s possible to have a successful 35-40 gallon tank of either peacocks or mbunas. Is that possible? I was thinking of putting 6 put everyone says you have to over stock but would over stocking in a smaller aquarium be the proper thing to do ? What’s your opinion?

Lol, i have a 150 gal tank with ciclids and have no idea how there are in it. We started with like 15 or 20 fish and guess what happened, they all breed. So i don't know, i think it kinda looks crowded.

How many cichlids can I put in a 15 gallon tank? 7 + seems way too high considering I have two that are trying to eat each other right now (separate them with a tank divider currently)

I have a new 90 gal that is towards the end of the cycling schedule. I have decided to stock this one with juvenile peacocks and haps because i like growing them out and watch them go through their changes. so once it is cycled should i add 10 then ten more then 10 more at a later date? or 15 and 15? suggestions please.

I know this is an old video and its probably been said but half of 50 is 25....half of 5 is 2.5 so would you not then be able to put 27 or 28 Mbunas in a 55?

Hey KGtropicals... this might sound silly... but for haps and peacocks... is it ok to mix Lake Victoria Haps with those from Malawi? What is considered to be a small to medium haps? Is a 4" hap considered to be a small or medium hap?

I've done a bit of an unintended experiment. I chose all submissive fish, aside from two that were ordered online. Due to a couple of goofs on my part, I now have 6 peacocks in a 75 - and they're being reasonably good citizens. I'm going to add more, but I have to admit I'm worried about upsetting the balance.

I am new to fish keeping, 3weeks now with 15 gallon tank. Just had my first diatom spot. I had 2 fintail barbs and 2 chichlids. One chichlid died due to stress of other chichlid chasing it out. Off late the chichlids chases tinfoils too. I love these chichlids.. This one recognizes me and gets excited when i come around. tinfoils dont bother about me and are comparitively shy,
So I Had few queries related to video:
    1. Should I add 3 more chichlids?
    2. what about tankmates, how do I consider them?
    3. My first bacteria bloom has started, which algae eater would suit tank?

Hi, I have just bought a 50 gallon tank which currently stocks a juvenile green terror who is about 3 inches. I know that green terrors are south american cichlids and will get fairly big as they mature but I was just wondering if I am able add maybe some convicts or EBJD. Some other options or ideas would be very appreciated. Thanks
