  • Cardenio is famous for being Shakespeare's lost play. How did it get lost? Is there any trace of it still existing? Might it ever be found or, if not, credibly reconstructed? What did John Fletcher have to do with it?

Thankyou yet again Dr Kat xx. I am astounded by the breadth of your knowledge on so many historical subjects, you are amazing xx. You have given me so much food for thought and you are the best and most interesting thing that I've EVER come across on RUclips!!!!
Hopefully we will find the manuscript, or maybe part of it, as sometimes we hoard old books and papers in attics etc without any idea of what we have. Or is this simply wishful thinking lol!! But then I think of the history of the recently attributed and sadly, imho, sold to Dubai, the glorious Salvator Mundi. But then that's a whole other story and as stunning as I think it is I am a little hypocritical because if I'm truthful with myself I wouldn't have been able to put it back on the wall after it was valued. Let's be honest I don't think that I could even afford the insurance!!!!!! I personally think it should be on display to the public, which is what was intended, so we shall see xx

There is a fabulous mystery/suspense novel from 2007 by Jennifer Lee Carrell “Interred with their Bones”. It is a great imagining of what might have happened to the lost play.

I love these videos. When you ask your question(s) at the end, it harkens back to my University days, and it feels like you are setting an essay, due at the time of our next meeting. Great memories of a younger and freer age.

It seems unlikely that we'll find it. I would love to see a reconstruction of it

What I find most fascinating is to reflect upon the idea that the two greatest minds in Western literature, Shakespeare and Cervantes may have in some way come into contact. It is almost certain that Cervantes knew nothing of Shakespeare nevertheless the English translation of Don Quijote may have fallen into the hands of Shakespeare. It would be a great idea for someone to write a play in which Shakespeare and Cervantes actually meet.

The History of Cardenio Is so difficult to enjoy without becoming sidetracked by the fact so much of the academics world scholars are uncertain, reluctant or both of its providence Therefore they fail to take it a valuable and creditable work regardless of who is credited as the play write. So many plays of the time share Shakespeare preoccupation on the combination of eternal love, revenge and death. If you get the opportunity to attend a performance of it, do so for the pure purpose of being entertained rather than a deep philosophy exercise for emotional growth. Not everything you are exposed in life requires analysis to be or not to be, and that is a fact not a question.

I had read somewhere that a small fragment, a song, does still exist from the play. Has anyone looked for it among other writings by John Fletcher?

Fascinating ideas on what happened to the lost play. I think it is possible the play burned up when the Globe burned down, but it is also possible it was then documented from memory and never finished. That could be what the producer found and pieced together? Twilight zone music...

I have never read nor seen any production of this play, but would like to.
As to why it was lost, where is it now, will we ever find it again--I have no opinion.
