At the age of 68 going on 69 there are those choons which never cease to electrify my soul, and this is one. Thank the God of your choice for the sublime vocal and instrumental production of this track. Always keeping the faith, from a Cornish soul brother.
He was murdered in about 1970 ..." in February 1970, Banks was shot and killed by policeman Aaron Bullock in Detroit, Michigan, after Banks intervened in his affair with Banks's girlfriend, Marjorie Bozeman.[2]"
Arguably the best non-Motown Motown hit ever. The Revilot was a club in Buffalo, where Darrell grew up. This little label's other hit was "I Wanna Testify" by The Parliaments, led by a young George Clinton. Darrell also recorded down in Memphis- he was on Volt, Otis Redding's label. Had he lived, he might well have been right up there with Otis as a classic soul man. Come to think of it, they've probably sung together Upstairs for 50 years. RIP Darrell- from Detroit to Myrtle Beach and all the way to Manchester (not the one in NH), you left us with a song that will never die.
The Revilot label recorded some notable other artists including Rose Batiste, J J Barnes, the Holidays and others. Some fine Northern Soul tunes to be found on Revilot. The label was owned by LeBaron Taylor aka Toliver. Obviously Revilot is a reverse spelling of his name. No idea if he owned a club too.
this is the song that got me to my feet and go over and ask a girl to dance, 39 years later two children and five grandkids that is what music with soul can do to a man
This is my favorite song. It has been since I first heard it in 1968. I wore my record out years ago on my old player--I'm so glad to be able to hear it again. Isn't it a remarkably well orchestrated song?
@geoff6942 You know its funny I always loved my dad playing records with the big bands on them. This recording has that same sound, which is probably what I like about it best!
Northern Soul is just amazing music 🎶 I remember going to our local dance venue in the 60s and now at 71yrs young we still go to every Northern Soul evenings 🎵 👍🏻KEEPING THE FAITH 🤘🏼❤️🎶🎵
I remember going to the Revilot Lounge in Buffalo in the late 60s and hearing Darrell sing this song. Very soulful singer who died far too young. He started out as Darrell Eubanks and later shortened his name to Banks.
Massive hit at home for him, and arguably one of the genre's five finest moments overall. Small repertoire, enormous and enduring legacy. Darrell Banks is greatly, greatly, greatly missed.
This Detroit hit is soul music stripped down to its essence. The tough, spare sounding band gives Darrell all the space in the world to sing his ever lovin' heart out. Sometimes that's all you need to produce a classic.
Got you beat by a couple of years But we had the music back in our days, we didn’t have all this music calling women bitches and hoes. We had music that meant something
True words said northern soul is in the blood and I'll never let go of the great days of the notorious WIGAN CASINO and yet it's still going when we've gone KTF Tim Salter
I have fallen in love listening to it, I have fallen out of love listening to it but I will always always love this song. First heard it at the Casino in about 1977 as a 16 yr old who loved rock music, that it blew me away is an understatement, it can make me feel so alive listening to it in a way no other song can. It is possibly the greatest piece of soul music ever recorded and will stay with me forever. KTF
Lee Brown It sure is my friend. Heart wrenching emotional turmoil, she has left you/ you have left her but can't live with out each other. It will bring joy to you heart and tears to your eyes at the same time. I am still a heavy metal fan always will be, but this like all soul music will haunt me forever as well. Listening to this makes me feel like a teen again, smile like I am insane and cry like I am a baby all with in its short duration, nothing gets close to creating that sort of roller coaster ride in music these says, sad to say mundane rubbish for the best part is modern music. Closest in the last few years have been, Eli 'paperboy' Reed and John Newman. Ktf
+Nick Williams . I have some faves, but this, and Spyder Turner's " I can't make it anymore" unreal,,,, I'm a Clash, Who, Jam, Floyd, Reggae and all kinds of fan, but nothing gets ya like this stuff. KTF
Nick Williams Before the Casino was the Twisted Wheel in Manchester. I was there in the 60s. Some great acts were there on Saturday night til 7.30am Sunday.
This 45 RPM was played in the 60's until it turned ashy white!! It was a classic!! I heard it as I walked down my neighborhood street. We music like this today.
Absolute classic. An all time Northern Soul classic from Darrell Banks. Released during the summer of 1966, where it made it to No.2 in the R&B charts but only got No.27 in the US charts in late September 1966.
Keep the faith. Just heard it played in USA live dancing omg love loved loved Wigan casino still dance every day even though 60 my all time ever classic ❤❤❤❤🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🖐️👏🏽
Vernon Kay played this number on his BBCR2 show the other morning, claiming it be the rarest record ever. Sorry Vern, I bought this in either Walsall or Woverhampton circa 1972 as a vinyl single and still have it - but with nowt to play it on...!
Seems like yesterday cruising with my buddies listening to this on WCHB & Butter Ball in a '66 Buick convertible around Detroit. Great times & we knew it.
Love this song it was one l would play over and over as a teen in Detroit. This gem of a song brings back great memories of a record store on Chene street in Detroit where my beloved father and I would go and buy records. Life was wonderful then and music was beautiful and singers were talented. Like kris kristofferson said in a song l would give all my tomorrows for a single yesterday 😀! The music and the vocal on this song was pure magic thanks to the internet for posting.
It's pure Northern Soul. Nothing else. We're not talking locations or styles of music within the USA. We're talking the Northern Soul scene, spawned in the UK, which has individual tunes from many genres of music under its broad umbrella.
@@kevinwhitmill2599 I hear southern soul in this song. Back then musicians traveled and they shared music. For the record Darrell Banks isn't the only one who sung this song
@@kevinwhitmill2599 There was a movie in the (I think early nineties) based on Northern Soul music and and group, forgot the name, but my buddy loved it. But, were the northern soul groups doing, recording Soul R&B type music before or around the same time as Motown or Stax? Don't quite know the history but will research it because I knew of it but just thought it was white groups/Bands from the UK who were really into Soul Music. But this Song by Darrell Banks was right up there with "Knock on Wood" when I was about 6 or 7 years old and I Really Loved both of those songs as a young child.. Thought this song was one of the Stax songs because it truly sounds like the Stax sound. Just watched the documentary on Stax Music Record Label... It's a Must see......
@aintnoway3467 You probably do if you're thinking within an American context. But....'Northern Soul' is a UK phenomenon. The term was coined by UK journalist and record store owner Dave Godin to differentiate between the type of Soul that was being played in London and the south (ie more Pop and/or Funk orientated) and that in demand by visiting 'Northerners' (including midlanders - anyone 80+ miles north of London basically), which was upbeat motownesque dance music, obscure and not pop chart type soul. This 'Northern Soul' encompassed music from Detroit, Chicago etc but also L.A., Memphis, Latin and TexMex style tunes. The geographical origin of the music had no bearing on it being accepted as Northern Soul within the UK (and now worldwide) context.
@thomford3386 There are no 'Northern Soul Groups' other than bogus ones trying to cash in. There are only Northern Soul tunes. Some artists and groups may only have one tune accepted as Northern Soul. Others might have the majority, even all, of their output deemed Northern Soul. Much of the Motown and Stax output, but not all, is deemed Northern Soul. The Isleys 'Tell Me It's Just A Rumour', Edwin Starr's 'Back Streets' and on Stax the Astors 'Twilight Time' being examples. There have also been some real non-soul oddities accepted under the banner of Northern Soul but I am too embarrassed to list them. You really need a love of the scene and it's music to understand really what it is.
So many of these Underated soul singers never got the chance with the big labels. Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Ruffin, Teddy Pendergrass, although great artists would give their left leg to sing as good as DARRELL BANKS..KTF.
I remember Darrell Banks coming to Cleveland,Ohio and singing at a club called the Music Box. He could Blow man. Ken Hawkins would play this tune on his radio show W.J.M.O 1490.
