- In this video you'll hear about some quick, basic archery tips that can help both beginners and "experts" just as they help Phil and Riley be more accurate and consistent as they shoot whether for fun and target practice or during the hunt. Riley starts with his tips and his brand new Mathews Traverse bow walking you through 3 things that work for him. Phil follows by talking about anchor points, grip and over drawing. We both put plenty of arrows (both field point and broad heads) into our Block Targets and it pays off when the season comes around. We don't claim to be experts but we hope our simple basic tips can help you improve as well.

Great video. I am guilty of not shooting outside of my comfort zone. All tips were good but this was the most important to me.
glad to hear you found this video useful! keep practicing!
@@WeekendWoodsmen thank you.
@@jameyhenderson7271 stay in touch throughout the season!
Sounds good.
Thanks man I appreciate it I'm 13 been shooting for abt a year and these really helped me hope ypu.have a wonderful weekend
Glad it helped! Keep at it! You too!
Thank you! I keep thinking that after five years of shooting, I should be in the habit of following through. But I too have to remind myself every shot.
sometimes it's hard to make easy habits stick!!
Great tips. If I may, I'd like to add a tip for the psychological aspect.
I've found that trusting my shot and keeping a clear head always helps shooting accurately. Any time I haven't trusted a shot or shot when too much was going on upstairs, I've missed by decent margins. If I'm shooting to where I'll hit a quarter at 10 yards and I don't trust it I'll miss hitting a paper plate
Great point! Being able to clear your head definitely takes you to the next level with accuracy
Great stuff gentlemen. Agree with follow thru. My tendency is also to grab the bow. Thanks for highlighting.
Yup! Thanks for the comment!
same here
whoa excellent video, extremely good points for first time shooting. I notes to improve my shooting. just starting shooting this week. 2nd shooting i hit bullseye at 20 yards indoor range. this video will greatly improve my shooting.
Glad it helped! Thanks for the comment!
Number 1 tip :dont draw across the chest with the elbow down
good tip.
Weekend Woodsmen yes i used to do this and it messed up my shoulder drawing with your elbow up let’s you use more muscle and it puts your arm right into position to shoot
@@hudsonh344 We've been working on the adjustment. it's helping!
Big tip helped me is dont draw across chest beother elbow up almost roll you shoulder it makes back back muscles engage can hold longer less wear and tear of shoulders etc
Interesting, it hurts my shoulder more when I keep it up, I always feel like my large back muscles engage better with the bow lower. I will even try to lower the bow a bit if I get stuck full draw on stand to be able to hold longer
Wisdom. The more anchor points the better!
Yes sir! Thanks for the comment!
Great tips! Good teachers!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Lots of good tips. That being said...it's a bit hard to take advice from someone drawing across their chest.
This is one of the top comments we get and I have shot in league for years and watched many great shooters draw across their chest. What is the actual problem with drawing across the chest versus higher? From my perspective, the lower you draw it the more the larger muscles in your back can engage, the higher it is the more stress on your shoulder/smaller muscles which leads to less smooth draws and more struggle. I have tried drawing higher and I consistently shoot better when I come into my anchor points from below.
From experience when you draw across the chest it's because your drawing to much weight, for me when I draw with my elbow up I can get to my anchor alot quicker and I'm on target faster as well and in a hunting situation it's a lot less movement.

Awesome, thank you!
@@WeekendWoodsmen yeah man, my pleasure. Nice to see other bearded archers
Nice tips but, do you had any problems with the long beard? Mine is a bit longer and i have years without shooting, any advice please? I dont want it gone
thanks for the comment - the beard is usually no problem. Sometimes the string will snag a hair and yank it out but not often enough to worry about!
Watching arrow through site. Never tried before.
it's a good way to be sure to hold your shot
Nice Channel!! Very Informative!!
thanks for watching and the comment!
These helped a lot
Thanks for the comment, glad it helped!
What is the best exercise for flabby inner thighs?
we recommend lots of walking to and from tree stands and dragging deer out of the woods
I have a tip for you turn your bow down so you can draw the proper way !!
And how is that?
You draw the bow back incorrectly I'm 58 years old if I drew the bow back like you do my shoulder would be blown out by now. For the health of your shoulder you should learn how to draw the bow with your elbow up take some lessons my friend it'll save your shoulder
I played baseball for years so my shoulder is already crap 🤣. I have heard similar feedback and tried doing that and it made my shoulder feel worse. To me lowering your elbow actually disengages your shoulder and engages the large muscles in your back like an upright row. I appreciate the comment and looking out for my shoulder I plan to keep trying because it gets me to my anchor points sooner.
Hey I was just wondering if you could help me out, I bought a new bow and at 20 feet it’s dead on split an arrow accurate, I go back 10 more feet it’s still accurate then I go to 20 yards and it never hits the same spot it’s either high or low and I’ve tried everything, I don’t know if it’s my release or my bow is just messed up
It could be something in your mechanics or tuning. The further back you move the more mechanics and tuning issues become obvious. Are you brand new to bow shooting? How much high or low are you missing by? Understanding those first will help. However regardless I would start with paper tuning if you haven’t already and then either bare shaft tune or broadheads tune. Reminder to ALWAYS shoot your hunting broadheads and setup before hitting the field.
@@WeekendWoodsmen I’m brand new to bow shooting, I’ve watched so many tips videos and I’m not sure if it’s just me being a bad shot but sometimes I’ll hit bullseye and sometimes I’ll hit high right or low right it’s never consistent with what happens, I keep 3 anchor points at all times and it’s still changing most times I shoot
How much high, low, left, right are you missing by?
@@WeekendWoodsmen it’s usually 4 inches high and to the right or just a little low like 2 inches
I think for being a brand new bow shooter you are being too hard on yourself 🙂
Focus your eyes on the target, do NOT look at the pin, keep both eyes open and concentrate on executing the shot. Over time you should be able to bring your groups tighter.
Was your bow paper tuned by yourself or the shop when you bought it?
That’s not how I was taught to draw a bow but whatever makes the arrow find it’s mark
Thanks!
I sight my bow in at 250yd to be sure
🤣
At kinda early the way you draw that bow I was screaming no no no pls
A few people commented on that. What’s the problem with drawing low? It engages the larger muscles in your back and puts less strain on your shoulder muscles.
@@WeekendWoodsmen it makes it shredder to pull back and a lot more effort if your have your shoulder higher it’s easier but if you like pulling your bow like that it’s completely fine tk
Only thing that matters is if you kill the deer with it
Gotcha, when I received some of those comments I tried pulling back higher, but it was definitely harder (not way harder) but I found it easier to find my anchor point coming up from under my chin rather than straight back. I think it’s just what I am so used to now 🤷🏻♂️
💯 thanks for the comment!
Hard to take someone serious who doesn’t know how to draw a bow..
The bow gets back and gets anchored, don’t really care how it gets back there. Some of the best shooters I know draw low and come up.
Never really understood why you would want to draw the bow up high across your face using mostly your smaller shoulder muscles when you can control the slow draw much better by being lower and using the larger muscles of your back and then bringing it into place, especially when you have bad shoulders, that’s a lot of stress on those muscles.
I can't watch this look at your draw cycle
Please elaborate
Your points are good but man you have a pretty bad draw of your bow. Your elbow is under your nipple line and it really should be around eye level.
Hear that a lot but I really don’t see the point in using the smaller muscles in your shoulders when you can use the big muscles in your back and I also like to come into anchor from below rather than straight back. I have tried it, but never felt comfortable getting into anchor that way. And if a deer catches me mid draw it’s a heck of a lot easier to hold it when you are drawing lower.
what lbs are you pulling back? i heard pulling your bow back like this is going to give you some serious shoulder issues
70lbs. Not sure how, when you draw lower you engage the larger muscles in your back and you aren’t using your shoulder as much. Just like if you are at full draw and you need to hold for a long time you can hold longer if you lower the bow
