Very interesting Paul, sometimes when you look at a sign for a while and you know full well it contains all the info you need, yet still you can't get your head around it! Now I know why, thanks for enlightening me.

I totally Agree that the arrows need to be pointed and stand on the side where we are intend to go. But it is better to stack logos/icons in the same side of message vertically where we have multiple directions in a single sign

Thank you for your instruction! One thing: In the US, rather than using the word "logo" for images such a P for Parking or a wheelchair for disabled services, we call those standard images ICONS.

Probably my mistake Terre as I should have used the word 'icon' too in hindsight, as we use that term in the UK too.

Having signs with Multiple locations and different direction arrows can be very confusing. One way to make navigating easier is to associate different colors with the various directions, then provide ground stripping- Making sure the color strips have different textures, (and possibly make different sounds if tapped with a Cane) will ensure that the directions are accessible too

how much information should a standard wayfinding board contain depending upon its location? is there a formula for the amount of information on a neighborhood street/city center road/highway....

How do you signal that something is behind them? A downwards pointing arrow?

    • @Travelwayfinding

Hi Chris - the easy way is to have signage that is placed alongside you as you walk rather than in front of you. So a sign on the side as you walk can have an arrow pointing to the left and hence to behind you. Hopefully I have explained that so it makes sense?! Paul

The Wayfinding Expert but then that de-emphasizes and hides the sign to some degree. Is there any best practice as far as putting arrows perpendicular to your travel path that point in the opposite direction?

Hi Chris - if the signage system has been properly planned, then the issue of people needing to go backwards should not be occurring. At decision points the options (factoring in hierarchy of information meaning providing the information but only the info they need) people should be guided (and from the key entry [paths)to the key areas and the idea of needing to go backwards should not really be an issue. Perpendicular signs though where needed can help.

Arrows on the wrong side always makes my teeth itch.
With regard to downward arrows, I've always associated the meaning of being either 1. descent or 2. go through something (eg a door, a corridor or an area smaller in size to where you have come from).

Couldn't agree with you more Driverdoozer. Feel the same way regards arrows on the wrong side of signs! :)
I can see the idea regards down arrow for through something although personally, I would recommend down only if some kind of downward decent ahead.

And add to that arrows that don't align either either with the text or each other.
By the way, Plymouth Argyle! I'm from Plymouth and interested in your follow on blog to PCC's wayfinding as IMO it was a start, but as usual has never gone far enough to be great.
