    Richard just wanted to mention that you need to lower the speed of your drill to a slow speed for screwing and high speeds for drilling. Also try construction screws it uses a different head instead of a Philips screw bit. The bit is included with the screws. It will make the construction easier to put together too.

    Thanks for the info and video.
    In case you didn’t know: cordless drills have two speeds. One is high speed, for drilling with drill bits. One is low speed, high torque, for screwing in.
    Looked like you were screwing in at high speed, which will strip the heads off your screws.

    Thanks for the video. But one thing of note. In your description, you indicated 4 pcs of a 2x4 that's 6-7 inches long for the base. However, in your video, the lengths you used for your base is longer than 7 inches. For those that may read this comment, make sure to measure the inside diameter of the pot you're going to use. The 7" suggested base lengths will easily fit into a pot with a 12" inside diameter. A smaller diameter pot will not fit with these dimensions. If you use a larger pot, you may also want to use longer bases, just to give it a little more stability.

    Pre-drilling the holes also prevents wood splitting...thumbs up! I also recommend using an Impact Driver with a brand new #2 bit on it to drive in the screws. Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Ryobi are a few brands, local home depot or lowes. I have 11 dragonfruit started from seed but I'm in Seattle area, the growth is slow and must bring them in for winter, don't know if I'll ever see fruit but I will need these trellises one day, these things are actually growing up here lol...

      Have you ever thought of trying to graft the seedlings to increase the speed of their growth? If you look through my channel my very first video is me demonstrating on how to do that. Your seeds would literally grow 100x faster and you’ll have fruits within 2 years! If you Graft them they can also start withstanding harsh weather conditions.

    Built 2.trellis' today... I used cedar lumber bought from Lowes. Total Lumber used:
    4 x 4 - 8 foot length, qty 1
    2 x4 - 8 foot length, qty 3
    Coated Deck Screws, 1 box, 75 count.
    Tools:
    10" Compound Miter Saw
    20V Impact Driver
    Speed Square & Tape Measure
    Came out great, took about 90 minutes to make both, including measuring & cutting all the lumber... Highly recommend using deck screws with a Torx (star drive) head, less slipping and stripping heads. Using an impact driver makes it a lot easier too.

  • @MichaelIreland
    @MichaelIreland 5 лет назад +3

    This is a great trellis, and an excellent design, but oh my goodness, bro you gotta get yourself a better quality Phillips driver! The one you are using is clearly stripped, which is why it's slipping (it's called Cam Out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cam_out). You also aren't driving the screws in deep enough, you have to drive them in far enough that the head is just below the surface of the wood you're drilling into. If your material is too hard, you can get a counter-sink drill bit. Next, the screws should be designed for service in a wet environment - deck screws or galvanized screws (probably should check if those are suitable for food crops) would probably be best. Next, the wood you are using - if it's in direct contact with soil, you should use Cedar or Redwood which are both naturally resistant to rot, and you can apply a number of food-safe finishes to the part that is in contact with the soil to make it last a lot longer (bees wax would probably work alright).
    For what it's worth, as a Canadian, the screws we use usually have a Robertson (aka "Square") driver socket instead of Phillips (aka "Plus"), and they are much less prone to Cam-Out. If they're available in your area, you should give them a try. Of course, if your driver is worn out, it's gonna suck no matter what.

    • @MichaelIreland
      @MichaelIreland 5 лет назад +1

      Oh, and I should mention, if you have Black Locust wood available in your area, that is even better for soil-contact service. It's super strong and very heavy, which would provide even better stability.

      Miachael Ireland, Wow thank you so much for the feedback! I do recommend to everyone to use a Cedar wood and this video with the material made was for demonstration purposes. I have such cheap driver bits and definitely need something better. Hi Richard. Thank you so much for the videos! Advice?..I have a small patio and hope to plant a DF tree in a BIG clay pot with a trellis that supports a "trunk" that is 6' from top of soil to top support. That way the "branches" are above my patio space like a shade tree of sorts. Do you forsee any problems using such a tall trellis? Thank you!

    Not to say that screws aren't good, but there's a way to hammer nails that will hold just as good. Never hammer nails straight in, angle them in different angles . Should save some money. Remember who the president is. Anyway I'm just an old wore out framer with brain damage

    It looks like the Tip of your bit is too small for those screws. I could be wrong of course. But if it is. Phillip Drill bits and Phillips screws do have size rating on the packaging. So a type 2 drill bit with type 2 screw heads will have less skipping as it seats properly. Anything larger or smaller, you risk stripping both the bit and screw at a faster rate

I'm in KS, so can't leave my DF out but for about 6 months between frosty nights, which is disheartening. But they're about 7' atm, and I'm getting ready to cut them back for the new season. Richard: Wondering how you ended up with a 4ft height on the trellis? Is this generally as high as a Dragon Fruit will grow? I've seen phots of Dragon fruit plants that seemed much taller.

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  3 года назад +6

      The reason I have it at 4ft is because it’s a height that is easily for me to maintain, prune, and harvest fruits. I grow in a backyard and not commercially to need it to be very tall for maximum fruit production. In theory you can make them as tall as you want. Dragon fruit can climb up to 150 feet easily if left grown wild.

      I found pots similiar to this at my local hydroponics store. The price was reasonable compared to garden center prices. He uses a 25 gallon pot that is about 20 inches wide at the top. I have since learned on the Grafting Dragon Fruit Facebook page, and elsewhere that smaller pots can be used. There is another RUclips video with a different base. He may have mentioned a few other tips in that video as well. I was directed to buy a non-toxic wood treatment to help the wood last longer. I am in no way an expert, but I hope this helped some.

    Nice Dragon Fruit Trellis. I was wondering wood will eventually rot because of the contact with water, when you water your Dragon Fruit plants. Have you tried other materials to build the trellis?

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 лет назад +5

      Hi chava Chiva, this trellis will last up to 5-8 years until it will start degrading. There are methods I take to re-secure it once it gets to that point. I’m from California so we don’t get much rain so I haven’t had to deal with the rot. This was just a low-cost and efficient way to make the trellis. I have looked into other materials to build trellis but then it starts to cost a lot of money when you have to build 10+ trellis. So I just keep it simple and cost friendly. I’m a backyard grower so it’s only for myself. If I was a commercial grower I will definitely look into material that will last forever like concrete post and industrial steel bars.

The drill you are using is more for drilling pilot holes, or using paddle bits, hole saws, etc. that's why you are having a hard time setting in your screws. BTW great videos!
