To be fair, though I would understand Kanae's POV why she gave him a cold shoulder, that shouldn't be the reason why she should also avoided him all those years before the accident. They could have talked about this earlier and settled their matters and its not fair from her part. The guy suffered long enough because he forgot what he did and she didn't explain to him either, so I'm not surprised why he was avoiding her too for years.
But however, I think Shinichi as a friend should have defended her and not listened to those people who teased him. Regardless of gender, having a childhood friend is a special bond between two or more people. As children, its common for these kids who think that friendship between opposite genders are lame and boring, I get that he was probably pressured. But his action was also what made him lonely in the process because Kanae didn't seem to care about him anymore.
But I'm glad both of them made up as adults.
