James Arness was a man among men. He a role model that boys of my generation followed. I am a better husband, father and person because of TV programs like gun smoke , Bonanza and others. I grew up without a father, other than in name only. I learned fairness and honesty is the way to live your life. James Arness walked the talk. Thank you James Arness and Ben Cartwright and others.
The character Matt Dillon was a well written. Honest, upstanding, strong. Never a racist, he believed everyone deserved a chance. If only there were more Matt Dillons in the world. Arness played him well. I always wanted to believe that there was a little bit of Matt Dillon in James Arness. Such a fine actor.
That is absolutely the truth about his character being a role model. And there were others, as someone has mentioned. Look how TV and sports athletes have degraded us nowadays, it is serious. Being in my mid 60s, have been re-watching Gunsmoke episodes for a few years now and thoroughly enjoying them. RIP our culture from those days.
James Arness' portrayal of Sheriff Matt Dillon I believe set the standard on how future sheriff portrayals would be cast. I have many happy memories of my father and I watching Gunsmoke. At the time my father was a very successful investigator for the Wichita police department later hiring with the Phoenix police department on the vice squad. Integrity, bravery, decency and honor are words that immediately come to mind when thinking about this man.
Still an icon and I enjoy all the episodes and movies that he played in.
