Lyrics
Girl afraid
Where do his intentions lay ?
Or does he even have any ?
She says :
"He never really looks at me
I give him every opportunity
In the room downstairs
He sat and stared
In the room downstairs
He sat and stared
I'll never make that mistake again !"
I'll never make that mistake again
I'll never make that mistake again
Boy afraid
Prudence never pays
And everything she wants costs money
"But she doesn't even like me !
And I know because she said so
In the room downstairs
She sat and stared
In the room downstairs
She sat and stared
I'll never make that mistake again !"

It's ridiculous that the confused sentiments of being young, insecure, indecisive, and scared can be crystalized in under two minutes by the telling of a story from both sides, that it can cause you to relive it all and at the same time show you how foolish it all was, how much simpler it could've been.
This comment is pure gold, thank you
I’m 44 and still love this way
The guitar, that riff, the drums, the bass, the lyrics, the feeling.. just perfect
This and well I wonder are one of their most underrated tracks !!
@@jasont.1792 this was a b-side
You've just seen the big picture, my friend!!! High-five to you!
Happy guitar. Depressed singer. Despair in the lyrics. Pure magic.
En guitarras la magia de Johnny Marr quien componía la música y ritmos.
Smiths era Marr.....best guitar licks ever! Then when Morisey lays down the vocals it's like youre not sure how it works but it does so well.
you are absolutely right
This is the magic of the smiths: happy music and astonishingly depressed lyrics
Music from the heart
Sometimes I realise I haven’t listened to The Smiths in a while and when I put on a song I wonder why I ever stopped.
Same. It’s been since 1987 listening to them, and I come back and talk wow. This is the best. Check out the Rockpalast 1983 show. Incredible. A band in the way up. No frills. Just massive energy. Cheers
So true x
Today I realized exactly the same thing.
@@nelliannevanderzee3280 cool 👍
i stopped listening to them last month because before that they really took over all my music aha, i love it but i end up killing it off quite quickly that way! it does not take long before i can come back and have them on repeat all over again
Existence may be dreadful at times, but at least we exist in the same space as The Smiths
Aye, here he is! The legend! Will you do a cover of girl afraid?

I watched a video on 'music on the brain', it's all about mood centres in the brain and shows how music uplifts you or can make you cry. Soft sounds like mandolins are soothing, some sounds are upbeat and make you feel positive, them there's sad sounds of piano or orchestra that can do both; all linked to memory and emotions. I've worked with patients with dementia and there is strong evidence music is such good therapy. Music is key and essential to life, Morrissey demonstrates this perfectly 🥰
The opening few seconds of this shows why Marr was a genius

To be honest I love the music. It would be amazing without any vocals

Is this song about a guy who’s too stupid to know the girl he likes likes him back?
@@trips347 too scared*
he says "sat instead" surprisingly
alot of people joke in the comments at how funny this song is, but this song really hurts when you like someone and can't tell them out of fear
trust me if the feeling is strong embrace the fear briefly, tell them how you feel . Ive been regretting NOT speaking up since like 1980 haha
Is it just me or is the vocal notation in the lyrics 'he never really looks at me' utterly mesmeric in the way it combines with the guitars? I could listen to those few seconds on loop for hours.
This song is untouchable.
R.I.P. Andy Rourke
The Smiths entire catalogue was made in the amount of time it took us to get through high school..
I'm still listening to this brilliant band in 2019 at the age of 54 and there's still no one to touch them. Best band ever!
Same 55 now it's in my car my house
Same 55, and in my bed too
I'm a young lad of 53 compared to you old farts. The Smiths are always on my Bluetooth headphones when I work.
Still going strong since I 1st picked them up in '87. Timeless.
Me too. 54 and still my favourite band ever
Great song today 2019...any Smith heads out there today ? Raise your hand...........we made it through 2020 and now is 2021. 2 years since posting this and im still jammin to this tune. can't stop... you guys still with me..let me know..peace to ALL

What song ... The Smith best Band ever!!!
Johnny Marr is The Man!!!
Es el genio de la guitarra además creador de la música y melodía en The Smiths.
Best guitarist ever, atleast his songs with the Smiths. The layering, the shimmering notes, the chord progressions are out of this world, I have yet to hear anything like it.
I fully agree. I've been playing guitar for over 7 years and have progressed a lot through countless hours sitting in my room, practicing classical pieces till my fingers bleed. Every artist i listen to i think that i could have made something like that up. But with johnny mart, his riffs are literally more layered than a novel. The chord progression is so unorthodox at times that it just sounds so out of place which makes it all the more sensational. Cheers from a Smiths fan!
@@oliveravasic He is the closest thing to Bach I've heard from a modern rock artist for sure.
@@oliveravasic And if the chord progressions weren't enough, when Morissey lays down his tracks it just makes many of their songs one of a kind. So emotive.
Just brilliant-.I hadn’t heard this one in many years and think it deserves more attention and play. Thank you The Smiths for your timeless artistry!
Prudence never pays and everything she wants costs money
But she doesn't even like me!

No.
the way the guitar starts up every time a character speaks is so gooOoOoooood
It's hard to believe listening to this since 1984 and still love it so much....a testimony of an amazing tune.
There are few bands where every member is at the top of their game, unique and better than most. Off the top of my head: The Smiths, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Fleetwood Mac. I’ve obviously not named all of them but The Smiths are singular among that group, in my opinion. I just don’t get tired of their music.
they are my favorite band. nobody else sounds like them. they are stand outs, totally original.
This may be one of my favorite Smiths songs.
I miss this style of 80s music. Who’s with me on this?
Seems very few ppl are ‘with you on this’ - mostly down to the ‘Style of 80’s music’ being tacky, ridiculous and generally dreadful . The Smiths were one of the very few - who didn’t dress up in bloody horrible clothes. Even U2 looked unbelievably uncool in some of the garb they festooned themselves in. Style wise the 80’s was a decade to forget !! Plus it brings back horrific images of Thatcher decimating whole communities by way of the miners - steel industry etc etc. A terrifying time. The threat of nuclear annihilation almost came true with Chernobyl - not good !!
Although I personally had a fantastic time - being in a rock group with my mates and living the hedonistic life of a musician was fun in the extreme - the polar opposite of what was happening in the real world. I was lucky to have lived in a beautiful paradox - living exactly how I wanted to live. Basically you can’t beat that way of life. I’m still living the same way today - just a bit slower for preservation... Anyway this was only meant to be short - yet I’ve written a book instead ! Lol. Cheers n Peace !! Rx
@@RikiNewtonMusicianSongwriter Japan (David Sylvian) dressed up in those clothes. But they were an artistically creative band. Even Morrissey said he liked them. Punk bands also dressed oddly (New York Dolls, Television, The Birthday Party), so it goes to show it's not about how people dress, really (although A-ha and ABBA took that to new lows). However, the abysmal band Queen existed and became prolific in that generation, which in itself makes me want to drop my overall re-collective standard of the 80s down from anything above/on par. Queen destroyed the genuinity in music, in my opinion.
Steve Melendez- it’s called “jangle pop”
@@RikiNewtonMusicianSongwriter80's fashion was far more put together, than the sloppy frumpy shit people, especially girls wear today. In the 80's girls looked sharp just going to the store, today girls wear their pajamas, and don't even brush their hair.
you don't have to miss it it's still here left for us.. :-)
Girl Afraid is such a killer song!
As is Girlfriend in a Coma. 😉
possibly my favourite Smiths song. Out of this world beautiful.
i swear marrs guitar and morrisseys voice are a concoction which results in an antidote
Rather than cure me, I found it conspired with the concoction to make me a Smiths maniac.
