Beginners is one of my favorite films of all time. I’ve watched it countless times over the last decade and it’s just one of those movies that has kinda grabbed a hold of me over the years and I often think about when having conversations about great filmmaking. The direction of Mike Mills, the narration of Oliver throughout, especially over the still photos. I love ALL the characters, including Arthur, the musical score, the happiness to sadness, loneliness to togetherness, fond family memories to the tragedies, all the settings, mainly the house and set decorations, the cinematography and color palette. It’s quirky in a way but serious in another way. One of those rare films that I feel was just perfect 👍🏼 👍🏼.

Fantastic video. Mike Mills created two of the most beautiful works of fiction I've ever seen. I would love to see your analysis extended to the inanimated pictures he throws in his montages, and the narration he creates around them.
His use of anecdotic things to create emotions is just outstanding. The History of Sadness sketches haunt me to this day.
ive watched this video like three times already, it's the only video essay on mike mills who's my favourite director, but it's so good!! i love the perspective. i link it to his wife too, Miranda July, and how in me and you and everyone we know she portrays this girl whose intention is already owning every kitchen utensil.
