Seeing those screens slowly render is so funny today. Loved this game when I was a kid. I think Urban Upstart was my first adventure game, followed by this one. These fairly poor graphics and render times didn't really matter to us back in the day, our imaginations had to pick up quite a bit of the work to make these scenes and situations real in our minds, much like when we read books I think. This was especially true for me back then when was heavily addicted to the Fighting Fantasy books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, absolutely wonderful adventures..some of those found their way onto the Spectrum too, like 'Warlock of Firetop Mountain' and 'The Forest of Doom'.
I still have my Fighting Fantasy books, including 'Warlock Of Firetop Mountain' and 'Forest Of Doom'! They're in pretty good nick too. I was thinking about putting them up on Ebay a while ago but I just couldn't part with them
@@YouveBeenGamed Haha you too eh. Around the height of the Speccy years those guys were hitting their peak with those fantastic books. All of mine are gone now, but I was tempted to buy the new editions though it's a shame they changed the covers for the worse. I assume they no longer had the rights to use the original artist's work, which is a real shame. What a great time for our young imaginations, eh?
@@YouveBeenGamed Actually the new editions to still contain the original artwork, I just checked, only they don't cover the entire book anymore..the originals were definitely better!
I got this game with the book. It was literally a game changer for me and one of the reasons I have pre-ordered the spectrum (another reason being manic miner :) ). I had never heard of Tolkien before and this sent me off down rabbit holes (or hobbit holes I suppose) that I still travel down today. Looking forward to next Friday as I gave away my Spectrum to a relative many many years ago and have obviously come to regret that decision.
lol hobbit holes I love it! It's going to be a real trip down memory lane next Friday and I cannot wait! I think we're all going to feel like kids at Christmas again!
One of the first games I ever played on my brother’s spectrum 48k when I was 9 - lots of happy memories of playing on it together, and eventually buying the hint book to complete it!
It was a great game to play with others wasn't it! My brother and I used to play it all of the time. My dad would also join in too, well actually take over more like!
I had his on the BBC, it came with a copy of the novel. I didn't get far. I had to get a friend to tell me that to get the trolls to turn to stone you had to type "wait" about 5 times. I think i gave up after that! I'm going to try it again when I get this.
I think i played this when i got my 2nd hand spectrum for christmas in 85. There were tons of games with it and im sure this was one of them. Even though i loved everything fantasy related, i wasnt a big fan of text adventures. But i did like games like Tir Ns Nog, where you could play a character on screen, move about on screen and all that.
Yeah I remember Tir Na Nog, it was a fun game. I loved text adventures but they could also get a little frustrating if you got stuck, with absolutely no walkthroughs to fall back on!
@YouveBeenGamed i know what you mean. We had to be lucky with a walkthrough or cheat in magazines, which could be hit or miss. One thing the internet is good for, eh? 😉 I do think modern games miss a good cheat or two. It was all part of the fun. A lot of people look down on them nowadays 🤷♂️
I didn’t have any siblings, and most of my friends had sisters, but not brothers. So I’m not au fait with brotherhood. The two lads I knew that had brothers, one was a military family, but both sons were very geeky, plus the brother was rarely there when I went round, so they were very polite. The other one, they did tend to argue and squabble, not so much physically fight, but there was some competition there. So I was very impressed how you and your brother preferred to work together rather than against each other on games. I think even the military kids would have some form of competitiveness when I wasn’t there. Maybe the divorce made you guys closer?
You might have a point there, the divorce did probably bond us. We've always looked out for each other over the years. We could be competitive don't get me wrong, and sometimes that would ruin the game we played so pretty much from an early age we felt it was more fun to work together! When Pro Evolution Soccer 2 came out on the PS2 and we could play a great game of footie on the same team, that was heaven! So many fun hours
@YouveBeenGamed no I'm in the UK. That was the date they gave me. Only ordered it last week. I always wanted one as a kid. Nearly everyone seemed to have one. All them magazines where you typed in programs, I could have learnt programming from it and my life could have been different. I had a ZX81 and then a C16 so those magazines weren't there and I ended up driving a bus 😜
I’ve bought one of these Spectrums for my brother - really looking forward to it! One question though. How do I find extra games and how do i put them on this new spectrum (I only have access to an iPad and an iPhone to do this)
You would need to do a search online for spectrum games, then download and transfer to a USB stick\drive. Then, pop the USB stick into the new Spectrum, if you get this far the Spectrum I'm sure will come with instructions on how to play them of the USB stick, should be very easy though. Not sure if you can get a dongle or adapter to connect to your iphone\ipad to a USB drive? Might be easier to just to use a laptop or PC if you can.
Your iOS devices will be fine for the job as long as they are up to date. I only use my iOS devices to download roms and transfer to usb sticks. You just need the camera adapter dongle thingy to get the files from your phone/ipad onto usb stick.
This game inspired me to create my own adventure game..... it sucked , with terrible images...I still managed to sell it to BT Prestel for the grand sum of £15...

C64 version here. It came with the book, which I still have :)
I found my book too, in surprisingly good nick considering!
Ah, text adventuring at it's finest; I remember this! 😄
an absolute classic. It HAD to be on The Spectrum
I played the Hobbit loads. But I only finished it with the help of a walkthrough from a magazine.
I have a feeling I will be reading one too!

I remember The GAC on Amstrad CPC464.
That came out on the Spectrum too didn't it? I seem to remember
@YouveBeenGamed It was on both as I recall yes, and had that awful lens copy protection thing
I remember when they released the Lord of the Rings part 1 and it came in a massive box to hold the book lol
@@sheppertonstudios8253 🤣 nuts wasn't it! Great times though
@@YouveBeenGamed For real! Best times.

I am so looking forward to delivery - are there any recommendations for a compatable cheetah style joystick?
I'm actually not sure what joysticks will be compatible. They're being very tight-lipped about that
Amazon claim that mines being delivered on the 25th.
So I got a week and a bit.
Are you outside of the UK then?
@YouveBeenGamed no I'm in the UK.

There's plenty of good sources online for Spectrum roms.
There is probably an “archive” that’ll have the full set of games on the “internet” if you look hard enough hope this helps 😉
subtly done there lol
only 7 days to go now.
very exciting!
Kill Gandalf
Poor Gandalf! lol
I can't remember the text, but if you type that Gandalf kills you. Game Over.

Wow now that's impressive! Maybe it sucked less than you remember?
