      You can also dye the paper in tea, it's something we did in the 5th grade for learning the revolution and the constitution of the United States. It works surprisingly well, it makes the document look similar to old papers such as the US constitution.
      P.S. crumple the paper, then flattening it back out before you do it to give it that old, rustic look once it's finished

    I've loved using the free version for making my first continent. One tip I would suggest is for roads, use the Subtract Land tool on its smallest setting. You'll have to make your rivers a little larger, but I think the trade-off is worth it. They stand out clearer and won't be easily erased if you try shading different land colors for the area. Then, when you're happy with everything, use a brown based land color with smallest size and radial softness medium to high and go over the roads. It'll create a highlight to help give a little more road color for you.

    The only thing that would push this tool way over the top is if they could figure out how to automatically take the edge of our continent blobs and etch them out into coastlines.

    For those watching in 2020, I decided to buy inkarnate after watching a few videos like this. The program is significantly improved and have a lot more features. The primary problem remains the fact that inkarnate maps are very easy to spot due to a low diversity of the same asset type.

    I think the best way to make roads is making the rivers bigger, so you can clearly see the blue background.
    Then you can go to the sculpt tool, switch to substract mode and draw the roads with the minimum size circle (just as you did the rivers here).

    Thanks for the presentation ! I litterally spent 12 hours remaking a simplified version of NOSGOTH, from Legacy of Kain. I can't make it as accurate as the real map (which is very old, hard to read, and there isn't ONE official map of it... Timelines shenanigans).
    BUT ! The result is pretty neat with the main things I need. I can still had some cream other it when I need to send my player to death somewhere else. Imagination and improvisation is the key.

I always want to write stories even though I usually delete them and I used to draw maps for fun to get started but this makes it so much easier since I am probably going to delete it anyway. The map looks fairly small- as in only 1 state or small country's worth of room if I wanted to label keeps and cities and terrain features. Being able to reduce the size of everything is do-able, however I am wondering if you can link multiple maps together to form a larger (world) picture? Within the program of course. I figure you could save all the maps and put them together manually. Appreciate the video, this is exactly what I am looking for!

    If you click the Select button at the top of the window, you can delete items you placed easily enough. Then if you make the coast or land in a way you don't want, you just have to redraw or erase.
    Kinda wonky in execution, but if one can get used to clunky execution of what you want to accomplish, it's okay.

    I really find Inkarnate good for smaller maps. It really lacks tools for continent / world maps. Something as simple of a dotted line to denote roads does not exist. It's great, and I'm a pro sub, for the use of regional maps / cities, towns, villages... I find I have to use a combo Wonderdraft/Inkarnate for my needs.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад +7

      Not that I know of. I have seen people make several free maps and stitch them together in a different program (lots of free options) to make one larger world map that connects.

    • @LickedHorn
      @LickedHorn 6 лет назад +5

      There’s no easy way, but the way I’ve seen people do this kind of this is to make the zoomed out map and download the image, then open that image in some image editor. Then you cut out the section you want to be zoomed in and make that it’s own image. Then you use that new image to create a new texture in Inkarnate, and paint that into Inkarnate. Then you go over that texture (because it will be low res) with the default tools. And at this point you have a zoomed in part of the map, but it’s not simple.

    • @Davidiculous

    Also for later reading, it will make it much easier for people if they get an update where some figures remain.

    But why not use PhotoShop (or GIMP) at this point? For the assets? I mean, yeah sure its seems easy to make a map, but really this is all about a using pre-made styles and assets on a stripped down image/assets editing tool.
    I'm pretty sure if I find assets, it might actually be easier on Photoshop (or GIMP) to make it looks good... Probably would take longer and be a bit more complex, but the style might come out much better and without much restrictions.

    selecting a terrain texture does nothing to the sculpt tool. You can select snow, or swamp, or desert, but the sculpt tool terrain reveals as the same tan texture no matter what. I like Inkarnate and have the pro version, but the painting tools are clunky.

    Can you make a video on 1.0? Im not sure when it will be done but they have sign ups for early access. And its been improved quite a bit since this video

    Looks like not much it free with it these days.
    But $5 for a full month is a pretty decent deal.

      click edge and scroll down, probably should have given you a headsup to click there before trying to wheel mouse down...

    Hey! So I just came across your channel and am in the process of watching all of your map videos. My question is, if you were to draw a map for the under dark, being the realm of drow and other creatures, how would that work out? Have you ever done an underground map?

      I have not, but if you Google image search Underdark maps you'll find a lot of different ways.

    I tried this on iOS and there is a website for it but there's only one color and you can do anything but shape a big blob.... Is there something wrong with my iPad?

    I tried it briefly, but it doesn't seem to work with wacom tablet. A quick check shows that other people have the same problem. You can click with the stylus, but it doesn't register drag, so you can't 'draw' with it. This is sort of a deal breaker if you're used to working with a stylus instead of a mouse.

      Yep. I noted that in the video. It was a bit frustrating for me, but I suppose for those of us who have a wacom tablet we'd likely have enough skill and tools to make one in photoshop. :)
      Still, I agree it would be nice.

    Ya there totes shud b an undo button. Having a map making tool and not having an undo button is like having a necromancer's crypt lair and not having an undead monster encounter... lol
