I'm a 28mm addict and want to upgrade my old nikkor-h 3.5 which sucks big time. I don't care for landscapes, just people shots. I want to focus super close. I've considered the nikons 3.5 and 2.8 AI and AI-s but the 3.5 doesn't seem like a big improvement and the 2.8 AI-s is now probably overpriced... Voigtlander makes a good one as you suggested too... but I would like your opinion on the best (probably zeiss :) or leica), and best value for price. thanks a lot for the effort you make giving precious informations and teaching good things, it's always a pleasure to learn.
+phigrecon zeiss sucks at 2 things, ultrawide and macro Voightlander and (almost all) Zeiss lenses are made in the Cosina plant, and both are 100% identical quality and build. i own ALL of the Voigts and most of the Zeiss. (well all the good ones). best for WHAT, and WHAT budget??????
I got to try this lens on my D700 with battery pack and it just feels nice and balanced. The focusing ring was so smooth that it makes you smile. Beautiful sharp images with great contrast. I will keep my eye out for a nice used one. So much better than the Chinese 1.8 by Nikon. This one and the 50mm Planer are both keepers.
I thought some people might appreciate a comparison of the Zeiss 28 f2 distagon's color rendition and microcontrast with that of the Nikkor 28mm f2.8 ais. I found the Nikkor's resolution to be roughly comparable and possibly even better at some apertures and focal distances, but its color and microcontrast could not compare. Compare the color of the siding of the house on the upper left in these two captures: Nikkor 28mm f2.8 ais: www.flickr.com/photos/137459092@N06/29648267096/in/datetaken-public/ Zeiss 28mm f2 distagon: www.flickr.com/photos/137459092@N06/29059168643/in/datetaken-public/ Compare the microcontrast on the aluminum pole in these two captures, which are crops from a much later image: Nikkor 28mm f2.8 ais: www.flickr.com/photos/137459092@N06/29057385074/in/datetaken-public/ Zeiss 28mm f2 distagon: www.flickr.com/photos/137459092@N06/29572685142/in/datetaken-public/ In both cases I tried to take roughly the same picture handheld at f8 using matrix metering on my Nikon d750. Shutter speeds differ somewhat due to differences in metering and slight changes in the light. It's not a perfect test, but I think it is probably broadly indicative of the differences between the two lenses. Note that when I increased the exposure by a stop in lightroom to compensate for the higher shutter speed of the Nikkor in the latter comparison, the Zeiss was still superior. The image with increased exposure is here: www.flickr.com/photos/137459092@N06/29648487186/in/datetaken-public/
Hi Ken, love your videos and have bought many vintage Nikon lenses off your recommendations. I just bought a Nikon f2 28mm and absolutely love it. How come I've never seen a video about the lens? What are your thoughts on this lens and maybe make a video about it. Thanks for all the info. Dave.
Hey ken! Would you receommend the ZEISS Distagon T* 25mm f/2.0 ZF.2? I dont think you have ever done a review about this lens. I am thinking about getting this for my film cameras [Fe2 and FG]. Currently has 50mm 1.8 e series and 85mm 1.4 planar.
It’s a great lens. As sharp and corrected as can be. The 28 has field curvature and great for street use and close-up. The 25, although close in fl, is square and straight. Both have amazing microcontrast.
+CEEPMDEE i used to for many years, but those days are over. ohhhh i always hated the 645 pentax but LOVED the 67 pentax which i owned 2 of, my fave film cammy of all time.
so I purchased the nikon sb28. Apparently they do not work with the never dslr cameras. Will commander mode or remote triggers work from my d7100 to the sb28?
+Jordon Tuttle oh yes, the remote trigger will work. well yes, i said the SB28 (and some others) cannot TTL but the SB28 will WORK, just not TTL i assume you got it to fire, otherwise theres a defect, you can use same in manual mode no problem
I am sory. You are so far from angry!!! Please learn from someone who actualy yells. Calls out bad names. And in general is being a little more irrational. You are very opposite of angry... I would give your angry a 0\10... But. There is space for improvement...
I have an older Contax mount 28mm Distagon. I close down the aperture and take a shot and I get what I saw all TACK SHARP, in particular if the subject is in the distance i.e. landscape. I have the 35mm and the 20mm zebra Flektogons. Obviously older lenses. These perform like a turd for things in the distance but you will read that they are "sharp". Yeah, they are sharp if your subject is close. Then these lenses are magical with great bokeh Then you get the reviews of people describing lenses as not sharp when they are tack sharp if you know how the hell to focus them. As for micro contrast and colour, well that seems to be ignored in reviews.
The art lenses barely even autofocus anyway, their focus has screwed up more photos for me than it's helped me get by mot being MF. I'm selling my 35 art on eBay at the moment, when I need a focal length around that mark in the future I'll probably just get the non VR Nikon 24-70. But until then my 20, and 85 primes can handle everything exquisitely
I love my Pepsi Max for the caffeine - 69mg. Ale 8 1 has 37mg, Diet Ale 8 has 44mg. I've got to cut down on how many I drink before using manual focus lenses. (lol)
Hello Sir. I very much appreciate your videos. I wanted your recommendation for a specific prime lens. It could be used or after-market. I shoot with Nikon D700's. I have no shortage of quality Nikon lenses with one exception. I need a quality lens for close-ups on hand-sized objects to something as small as a ladies ring. I look forward to your reply. Ian
+ianrsigel Tokina 100mm 2.8 Macro for $380 used :) Ive had many 1000s of people buy one off my recommendation, all are happy campers :) extremely high quality, better than the 105mm nikkor in every way :)
Ken I know its a 2 years old post, but in case you see this comment I had a question - I saw it somewhere that the pentax 28 f2 is the same lens as zeiss 28 f2 when its comes to optical design. Do you know if that's true? Check this video I got over the internet - vimeo.com/7028401. I am blown away by the 3D rendering. Any thoughts?
So in fact and to be short with its 18, 28, 35 , 50 and 85mm Zeiss is just the best lens manufacturer ever, isn t it ?
My experience with the Zeiss Planar 85mm f1.4 and the Sonnar 135mm f/2 so far absolutely for my eye and taste Hell yes

I sold my f2 in preference of the f2.8. Half the weight, a third (at least) the price, better focus and better rendering
Keep in mind that weight helps dramatically with camera shake

I'm assuming that a zf.2 lens will fit on a FE2? The cpu contacts won't affect fit? Thanks for all of your reviews!
Got the ZE 28/2 - fantastic. ZE 50/1.4 great as well. Quality of the images is excellent. V Close focus on 28/2 too.
So they stop making the 35 and can be found only used. 28 is still available brand new. Should I risk it and by the used one?

It should read "much larger image" not "much later image" in the middle of my comment.
Super! is it true the Olympus zuiko Auto-w 28mm f3.5 is a good alternative?

Vs. the S-M-C Takumar 28mm 3.5?
Love 28mm and the 28mm Takumar is great but that Zeiss 😍
Any opinions on the Takumar?
If I had to choose one, money not the object which is BETTER the Voigtlander 28 f/2.8? or this Zeiss 28 f/2 ???
zeiss 28
Thank you for the quick and courteous reply.
Be Well.

Please review the zeiss 25mm f2 ze/zf2 lens would love to see your take on it
Classic would be fine as I have no plans to look at the milvus vs
Have you ever reviewed the nikkor 55mm f/2.8 macro lens?
+UrMomsDadsGrannyII ohhhh yes
I wanna ask
24-85 2.8-4d vs 24-85 3.5-4.5g vr
which one is better
+Feli X 24 85 VR G is much superior, forget the other one.
How does the Zeiss compare to the Voigtlander 28?
+Stephen McCulloch which zeiss, ......? certainly sharper, but theyre 2 diff. lenses.
+Theoria Apophasis The 28.
I don't know why am even asking. I have a Voigtlander on the way. It has been stuck in customs for a week. Grrr!
customs? jeez, im glad i never have to deal with that BS here.
Hows the sharpness of the Crush Orange? :)
+Michael Zaritheny (mzaritheny) tasty sharpness :P
+Michael Zaritheny (mzaritheny) - Ale-8 beats out the Crush for sharpness, but Pepsi Max blows them away in regards to focus speed. (lol)
