- The Maschine is not featured a lot on this channel, even though I use it pretty often.
I’ve had some questions on why I have both the Maschine and the Ableton Push, soI thought it’s time to make a short video on it and give the Native Instruments Maschine mk3 some love!

What device in your setup do you love to fire up to get that different experience and inspiration?
I’ve used Maschine with the MK1 controller since 2013, that’s when I started making my own music. Last week I bought the MPC X. I like Maschine software but standalone the MPC is the king. And now that I have that ability that’s the only way I’ll be working from now on.
Awesome, congrats on the MPC! It must be so liberating being able to work completely standalone. 😀
@@stickytentaclesmusic Thanks! It is. I like Maschine with its software, that’s where I think it shines. The Maschine Plus has a long way to go before it can rival the MPC in standalone. I’m keeping my Maschine though!!!
I love my MK3 and Maschine's software. I've became very proficient in working with its features.
@heavihandzthearch1322 Yeah there’s a lot of great things you can do with this. Especially love how the synths and samples in the packs sounds. I find it very inspirational and the music I make on the mk3 always sounds way different than the music I make in Ableton so it’s a great source for inspiration and variation for me. Still struggling with the time stretching workflow, especially with samples I’ve recorded from other songs. Still find it a bit confusing when jumping between the audio and sample module.
it is an awesome composition. Wished this vids were here before I sold mine very frustrated as I could not get a hold of the idea of Maschine. So I enjoy Maschine now from the far so to speak 🙂
Ah man, sorry to hear that! The Maschine can be very frustrating to work with sometimes, especially if you've been away from it for a while and need to re-learn something or even trying to learn new stuff. It has its quirks but I really like it as well...but I had to watch a LOT of videos and do a LOT of testing and reading. To be honest I was considering selling as well but decided to stick with it, and I'm happy I did.

Stretching a sample is really easy with the stretch option . Is that what your doing ? Then to change the pitch without the tempo you change the mode to free in stretch mode . Works perfect
Yeah that's a good tip and that works well, but my main struggle has been the time stretching itself, to get my head around how to take a sample, time stretch it and make it fit the project tempo before playing with the pitch. For some reason, when I load a snippet of a song into the sampler module and try to stretch it to the project tempo it often doesn't completely aiign with the tempo. I've seen a Blezz Beats video about it a couple of times as well as Jeff Gibbons and a couple of others but still find that I can't seem to nail the process so it's still quite a bit of a head scratcher for me tbh

I also have Push 2 and Maschine MK3.
While I think Push 2 is an amazing controller I'm not using it that much. I really like the pads of the Maschine better. Push 2 can control a lot of Ableton Live but the DAW has so many features I rather use the keyboard / mouse for doing anything in Ableton, it's just quicker if you learn the shortcuts and with a better overview than the Push display.
And there's a difference I think with the Maschine, the Maschine DAW is a lot simpler, it doesn't have as many features as Ableton. And the MK3 hardware is really well integrated in the Maschine software. For me it's easier to just work on the hardware in Maschine than with Push 2.
In means of pads, I have practiced, but playing cords and melodies on square pads doesn't seem to work for me, so I have a small Keylab keyboard on my desk for it. If I want to fiddle a bit more I also have a 49 key native instruments keyboard. And when it comes to playing drums on pads, Maschine is the clear winner.
So, I was thinking a few weeks ago, the Push 2 is in it's box already for a very long time, might be better of to sell it. However, as I said, it's a really beautifull controller and I always find it hard to sell something like that 😂
I'm with you on the time stretching, it's doable for sure in Maschine, but it works so much easier in Ableton. The combi of both, especially if you use racks with routing midi and audio between Ableton and the Maschine plugin. is awesome !
First of all; thanks you so much for the lovely and comprehensive comment! I’m with you on a lot of the points, I use the Push more like a mixer and control surface, it’s especially good to trigger clip recording when I’m writing guitar based stuff because that gives me a very efficient workflow to get ideas down quickly. The pads on the Mk3 feel really good and I’ve set it up to be a drum controller so I can start recording or adjust volumes on the Push and then play on the Mk3. I do use the Push in Note mode when I’m playing a sampler/simpler with some chops on it or if I’m playing some ambient synths because I tend to play different notes and progressions on that compared to a regular keyboard. I feel now that the way I’ve set up things now works great for me personally as in that way I can get the best of two worlds. But if I’m looking to cook up some beats, I go straight for the Maschine.

I have a Kontrol s61 and a Studio. I used to have an MPC300 and The size reminds me on that and They look great together on a two tier rack in my studio.
I have a maschine mk3 and mk2, MPC Live 1 mpc 249, I use my mk2 as a controller for Ableton. Works very well.

@@stickytentaclesmusic they have their differences. For me it depends on if I just want to turn one thing MPC. If I’m doing something where I need Mac power lol. It’s Maschine. I’ve been using Maschine for 10years. MPC just for 2. I like the touch screen
Why don’t you use your mk3 to control Ableton? 🤔
@kierenmoore3236 I got a good deal on Ableton Live and the Push2 when I decided to move from Cubase to Ableton so I decided to go for that, use the more Ableton integrated Push2 to control Ableton and found that I loved using the Maschine in midi mode for drums in Ableton. Still use Maschine mk3 with the Maschine software to make beats and as a variation from Ableton.

Also use audio tracks. Resample whatever it is to another pad, convert to audio track. Then you can play with pitch and tune without it changing time signature.
Good tip! I’ve been doing that but somehow been struggling with the sample speeding up or down. But I’m getting close. Will try your advise asap! Thanks heaps!

Thinking about buying Machine MK3. Have been making music with the help of real keys, cubase and soft synths in the past. Would love to try something a bit more electronic, like dance or trance tracks, and think Machine could help experimenting with that.
Thanks for the kind words, really appreciate it! The Maschine is a very good piece of kit, if you don’t mind being tied to the computer. If you want to be able to work in standalone mode without the computer, you’ll need the Maschine+, which is twice the price than the mk3. I love all the different expansions NI releases for the unit, and I find it very inspiring to work with and find that I make very different sounding music when on the Maschine compared to Ableton. If you’re coming from cubase chances are you’ll need some time to adjust to the ideas mode/arrangement mode philosophy, but I guarantee you that you’ll feel liberated pretty quickly as the ideas view is a refreshing step away from the linearity of Cubase. And the pads are beautiful to play. There are a few things that aren’t necessarily intuitive and pretty difficult to get your head around at first but there’s a lot of videos on it now so you should be good. Good luck and enjoy the ride if you decide to pull the trigger on the Maschine! 😀

Might have to pick it up and see if I can make it go somewhere at some point, I sort of left it at where it was when I didn’t see where to take it as it’s a bit of an oddballl track for me to do, even with al the different types of music I make, but this was really encouraging so might have to look into this again at some point…! 😀
You can use Serato sample , or you should pitch the sample first , resample , then chop.
Serato is the easiest way though
Yeah that would be a good strategy, will try that too, good point. Have actually had Serato on a trial before and it looked really easy and slick but I decided against it since I felt I’d rather learn the Maschine properly and do all the chopping there. Thanks for the tips, this inspires me to push through the difficulties and keep learning. It’s much apreciated!

Before I turn off the video I'll just ask if the Maschine Software finally can import flac files?
Hey! I haven't tried it, but it looks like it doesn't. On the Maschine faq pages (www.native-instruments.com/en/products/maschine/production-systems/maschine/faq/) I see that NI states this about file types that are supported by Maschine:
"You can import MIDI files, iMaschine projects, AIFF and WAV audio files, and REX 2 files including their slicing information. MASCHINE also offers import for MPC 500/1000/2000(XL)/2500/3000/4000 programs."
Turn off the video? Man Maschine is still the best kit out there. I’m just about to upgrade to the + unless NI decides to come out with a studio+ next week 😆
That sounds fantastic, the + looks like a really good unit, and just to be able to take it anywhere and play anywhere sounds so great. Bet you’ll have lots of fun with it! 😀
People tell me, is maschine mk3 just like an mpc, but without an onboard processor and storage, in that it uses the host computer for processing ? Or am I way off ?

That's the experience yes.
Bang on, that’s exactly what it is. Also, NI have released and continue to release expansions with synths, samples, loops and one shots that you can buy so there’s plenty of possibilities with it.
Im not 100% sure, but i dont think the MPCs come pre-mapped for VSTs. After getting the MK3, i could never go back to anything lacking pre-mapping.

Yeah, you make some very good points here! I think for me the standalone concept is more related to portability, to be able to go make music outside, at the cabin or on travels. If I’m being realistic, I might be romanticising this because I’ve watched so many RUclips videos of people with portable DAW-less setups and that I’d in reality most likely would be spending most of my time at the computer anyway but at some level I still feel I’d at least would have liked to have the possibility to make music anywhere.

Again, you make some super valid points here. Never actually thought about this concept the way you describe it and it does make a lot of sense. Not sure if I’ll be able to kick the urge for the standalone product completely just yet but if I look objectively at it a connected and continuously updated product will have the potential to be better in the end than a fully or partially supported product that will need some more involved update cycle follow up. Anyhow - I love the product, what it sounds like and what it does so I’m definitely happy with my unit. Thanks again for the comment and for giving me the opportunity to look at things from a different perspective! 😀
