- This webinar, hosted by the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), focused on improving our understanding of key recommendations for protecting vulnerable populations from wildfire smoke, in support of AB 619.
Dr. Stephanie Holm, Dr. Fiona McDonald, and Dr. Francisca Santana each presented research related to special considerations around respirator use when it comes to wildfire smoke. Dr. Stephanie Holm is the Director of the Western States Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit at UCSF and is a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Committee on Personal Protective Equipment. Dr. Fiona McDonald is the Co-Director of the Australian Centre for Health Law Research at Queensland University of Technology, and recently led an international team of researchers who developed a framework to support ethical decision-making on whether governments and health agencies should recommend or provide masks to the public. Dr. Francisca Santana is a professor in University of Washington’s School of Environmental and Forest Sciences and has conducted research on how social influences affect response to wildfire, such as when to wear a respirator during a smoke event.
