For me, I don't mind repo carts as long as they are honest about it not being authentic, and the price reflects that. It's great for people who just want to play old games and still have a somewhat "tangible" collection to put on a shelf (over a flashcart or such), given the retro games market is a hyperinflated mess right now. It's only when repro carts are falsely sold as an authentic game, and charging authentic prices that I have an issue. As it stands, paying $20 USD for rare, hard-to-find games is great.
10000% agree. Never had anything against them, but its frustrating when people advertise them as original when they arnt. I also think some people who have them dont even realize themselves. I am tempted to replace my lost Mario Party 2 with a repo because the price for the original is absolutely fucking insane..unreal that it costs 60$+ for an N64 game that's widely available.
Agreed, I bought some Sega Genesis games from Aliexpress and they look great and play perfectly fine, they have Games stamped on the back so they are easily identified as such and can't be confused for original cartridges.
Purist are only salty because there are less potential buyers. They lost the casual gamer because they arent going to spend 200 dollars when they can spend 20 dollars to relive their childhood
I’m still a collector of physical media and I just started my physical N64 collection and I still love the idea of repo cartridges I’m a fan of the game not the corporation so I couldn’t care less if the cartridge wasn’t made by Nintendo I just wanted to work completely fine not crash on me and save my progress
Thanks for making this video. My repro of resident evil 2 seems to work fine so far. I don't mind the repro games. The collectors market has made it really hard for people who love to play games to be able to even get them at a decent price. Repros are great for people like me who never plan to resell them and who actually want a library of games to play.
thanks for the video. now that im an old man and have kids, i've dug my old n64 out of the attic and i picked up a few surprisingly cheap games on ebay. when they arrived, they were clearly repros. i want collectors to have their fun and make money, but i just needed someone to confirm i wouldn't blow up my childhood n64 with these knockoffs. i really appreciate the detail you went into
Just recently I started collecting nintendo 64 games and wanted to know more about repros and was looking to get bad fur day specially so thank you for making this video. Ill get the repros based on how the game saves because ill be damned if I freeze before i hit a save box in paper mario lol
Im not paying 1700000 pesos here in Colombia for Metroid Zero Mission or Conker dats more than minimum wage... Hey btw is that a 50 inch tv!? U use an hdmi adapter? Those games look beautiful there... Sharpp!!
Thank you; everyone has done a review on these things yet no one has just plug it in and played it. I literally just want to play Bad fur day and not spend a million dollars.
That’s exactly where I was at it’s not perfect like I said but was worth the money for sure now if only I could get past the damn bat tower 🦇 level hahaha
Thanks man! I got an hdmi adapter and broke out the 64 on my kids. Just wanted to know my chances on buying a repo. I don't want to collect, I just wanna have fun with the family.
The games generally do play, but they are consistently inconsistent for quality control standards. The biggest issues are with the onboard game saves and longevity. It is also possible to get some with bad rom flashes that will give you problems right out of the gate. Bottom line though is that a multicart (ie Everdrive, ED64) makes repros basically irrelevant and a waste of money and unlike repros if there is something wrong with the game, you can fix it.
Hey man amazing content and video! Conker is also one of my favorites... Very creative and artistic.... But damn fat last part with them nazi teddy bears was hard af hahaha
I only own a few Nintendo 64 reproduction cartridges (In fact, I'm actually playing a repro of Conker's bad Fur day right now), but most of my Nintendo 64 games are authentic and I do plan on getting an authentic copy of Resident Evil 2 for Nintendo 64
These are mass produced by various outfits out of China. Lots of folks who sell these in bulk on eBay. Definitely Buyer beware for quality control standards though and there are much better options for the money.
I have started buying repros for the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, but mainly these repros are games that never came here in America and are Fan translations, (Tales of Phantasia, Terranigma, etc. for the SNES by example). They work quite nice. The only games I would like in repro for the N64 are: Wonder Project J2, Getter Love!!: Cho Renai Party Game Tanjou, Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Earth, Shiren the Wanderer 2 and Puyo Puyo Sun 64.
I somehow managed to find a repro cart of conker for like 8 bucks on eBay from a seller from china and I didn’t have a single issue with the game itself. I sadly forgot the name of the seller since this was like back in 2020. I don’t mind repro cartridges if you wanna play the game and don’t wanna pay an arm and a leg for an actual copy
Ive tried it and i cant even get the stupid gameshark to work. Gameshark for N64 is crap from what ive read. Action replay has a better chance of working. Playstation, xbox, saturn, dreamcast & gamecube did gameshark better. Nowhere near half the problems ive ran into.
They do for the most part, depends on how good the repro cart was made. Ive seen some have graphical glitches, lower resolution and frame rates among other things but like i told someone else if i had to guess from everything ive ever seen, read or heard about repros ya got a 60% chance of getting one without any problems whatsoever and runs like the official one should. Not that originals dont have problems from time to time. The other 40% have an issue of some kind sometimes minor sometimes major so its gamble if youre unlucky hopefully its minor which would be the most common. The ones with major problems are rather rare. Again do it at your own risk.
Those could be isolated incidences. If i had to guess ya gotta 60% chanceof gettinf a fully functional repro. The rest have issues of some sort where its a glitch, save fail, game freeze or cuts off, lower frame rates as specific points for whatever reason, controls dont work as they should. The list of possible issues goes on and on. Not that official copies dont have problems now and again. A repro is like a homebrew of the official. They got less people working on it and dont have the experience or proper equipmemt to always get a functional game cart like the developers do so do it at your own risk.
I have a few reproduction carts on the GameBoy but I resorted to EverDrives from the guy who makes them who lives in Ukraine. I got one for the GameBoy Color, N64, NES, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis. What's nice is you don't have to worry about your game files erasing or consistant freezng like from that Conker's Bad Fur Day Repro Cart, because it's all saved on the Micro SD Card so it's a problem with the cartridge and you can just replace the cartridge. I have Super Mario World Rom Hacks, Pokemon Rom Hacks even high quality ones like Prism, and Smash Remix all running on my Ever Drives for Super Nintendo, GameBoy, and N64. They are pricy but honestly man you start saving money instead. Repro Carts are a cool option imo because they look cool and to the common eye they look legit, but any N64 fan can tell when looking at them (as fresh and cool as they look) that we can spot a lot of differences on those things :)
So far so good we have actually been using the SM64 with a 2.0 GameShark for awhile now I haven’t had time to do videos in a while I will record something soon
Yes Conkers is still working and saving it does freeze occasionally on transition from game to cut scene but not enough that I have completely stopped playing lol I haven’t used it as much as Mario but both have held up so far
I got mine on eBay when you search it up there will of course be the hundreds of dollars authentic copies and then you scroll down to the ones that are like 24. Some are like 19 but I went with the one that was a little more expensive and was shipped in the US I have had guys say that they got re-pros that didn’t work. I personally have not come across that yet.
I have heard that as well I have not yet experienced it with the two I have I did have a GameShark completely wipe itself and not function correctly anymore but I’m not sure if the repro has anything to do with it because my save files for the game itself are still intact
The N64 cart uses a batter to save like the nes and super nintendo. It could be a battery issue and needs replaced but thats under my assumption that repros also use batteries.
@@TresJunk hey just and fyi hameshark for n64 is known for failures, glitches and ceasing to function altogether its best to just stay away from that platform cuz they really are crap and go to action replay youll have better luck with that one. The freezing during gameplay is probably the console not the game, probably needs cleaning. The cartridge probably isn't the problem. I haven't had a single issue with my repro Conker's, works perfectly. $16
Aside from placeholders in a complete collection for the really expensive games like Sculptor's Cut; I don't see much use for them. Now that I've said that; let me kinda contradict myself. I did buy a few reproduction carts a few years back. In my defense it was before the last revision of Everdrive 64 was out and i was unconvinced there would ever be a 100% compatible flashcart. I got Animal Forest with an english patch that actually seemed pretty good but definitely was not 100% functional. still fun to play around with. Also got Ocarina of Time MasterQuest and played thru that for the first time. the game itself was a huge disappointment ("new dungeon challenges" were pretty weak imo) but it was cool to play thru on the N64 instead of gamecube. TLDR: you're better off buying an everdrive than a bunch of repros. but, if you're just filling a few gaps in an existing collection, why not?

I think if we are going to be honest the retro scene is a mess right now you have scalpers not to mention so called collectors who don't even play the games both of which are boosting the prices. I got a nice repro copy of earthbound on the snes boxed with instructions for £70 from Etsy which plays lovely.
