  • Royal Talens art creation sketchbook review. I wanted to test the Talens sketchbook out with some wet mediums such as watercolor, as I had heard good things, and that this sketch book is intended for use with watercolours, excellent!
    Any way, I got hold of some on Amazon and tested a full range of materials on the pages such as graphic pencils, pencil colours, inking pens & fine liners, watercolor pencils, watercolors, water based markers and last of all, alcohol based markers. You can see the results in the video.
    The sketchbook itself is a nice design, with a hard cover available in a range of colours, 80 sheets / 160 pages, acid free, which are an off white colour. I use an A5 sized sketch pad in the video, but there are larger sizes and shapes available.
    What other sketchbooks or art supplies do you guys want me to test out on camera? :)

    It’s interesting that it has been advertised as watercolour sketchbook. I think the producer market it as dry media, actually. Nevertheless, I have three of them in different sizes (a6, a5 and a4) and unless you fiddle with water-based media or markers too much it performs very well. I am so grateful for these - for me they are exactly what I need and the price is very affordable 👌

      Thanks so much for watching and giving feedback. Yeah I don't actually use watercolor often so it's not a huge deal for me personally, but I wouldn't know about others that work primarily with paint mediums. At the end of the day it's not too expensive though and a nice little sketchbook :)

      Talens doesn't advertise it as a watercolor sketchbook, as you note. It seems to be used for light watercolor by quite a few urban sketchers+ that has popularized it as multi-media.

    These are amazing, i have tried every sketchbook imaginable with ivory paper and this by far performs better than some of the 160-170gsm sketchbooks and the ivory tone is darker than all the other which have a lighter ivory, this is the only sketchbook i keep backups of as im not burdened by the price and it handles a lot of medium very well even watercolour without it breaking the paper i dont know how theyve managed this but if you try to watercolour on any 165gsm eventualy the paper will have a breaking point this one didnt at all

      Thanks for your comment, a lot of information there! I haven't compared it to similar papers for watercolour so that's really helpful to know :)

    These and the Sakura ones, which are exactly the same paper, they are designed for Illustrations using the Sakura Pigma and other similar products that the company produces. It's nice for sketching random illustrations, but has no tooth for dry medium or watercolor use. It can still take some light washes, because it was designed for fineliners that use ink, however, that's not meant for those uses, so it's not great. It's the perfect sketchbook, for either Urban sketching, using the Pigma Micron or other similar fineliners, as also any kind of illustration using those. Pens work great too of course. Black ink fountain pen sketches look good too!!

    Those can handle watercolor and indian ink too, wet on wet no problem...just one thing...wait until it dries for next layer. Layers by layers, Use weight on top, I use 3kg when it is dry to flatten up again. Acrylic colors works great, just one layer, wait, work it another, but once the first layer of acrylic is dry the next layers are easier. Use primer if you want to.

    been using this sketchbook for a couple months and its been my favourite ever 2 use.. i have to mention that i think the book is meant to be bent so that it lies flat! every time i use a new page i bend the two sides back a little and it kind of breaks the page open so that it lays flat, and doesn't damage it at all! super helpful for cross-page drawings etc.

    I have two A4 sizes of this book. When I compare it to my daler rowney ebony sketchbook I personally prefer the daler rowney. It takes wet media much better. The pages are 150 gsm but are thicker than the art creations paper.

    If these are the same paper as the travelogue handbook, I've been using them for ink and wash for years. I like the creamy huge because white gouache pops.

    Have you tried the leuchtturm sketchbooks at all? They are also fairly inexpensive (compared to Moleskine, Stillman and Birn etc) and are a whiter paper, which may be preferable to you 😊

    Is it possible for markers?

    • @SketchedbySte
      @SketchedbySte  8 месяцев назад

      Hey, that's a really good question, I'm not sure why I didn't test markers.. I will try remember to give it a test this week. I would imagine it will work for markers, like most watercolor people, but often it uses a lot of ink and can have some bleed. I presume you mean alcohol markers like copic, Ohuhu etc, or do you mean watercolor markers?
