Thks. Replaced my 2013 F06 650i spark plugs x8 with Bosch ZR5TPP33. According to mechanic it doesn't look like the spark plugs have been replace before, 123K km. Car idle and runs smoother and seem to fix my car problem where the engine sometime almost dies off when slowing to a stop.
Great video , I changed all my spark plugs and coils !!! It look intimidating but it was probably one of the most easiest jobs I’d say … just take your time and do 1 plug at a time 👍👍👍
Love your videos!!! I initially went to a certified dealership(to check on error codes that I knew of as a second opinion) and they tried to charge me for vacuum line assembly with breather hose and spark plugs over 2K. I looked at the guy like he was nuts and have replaced already the assembly parts. Spark plug/ignition coils are next. Not willing to pay that much for simple work. I appreciate the great detail that you add to all of these videos. Very easy to follow and you don’t ever seem to miss anything…
Thanks for your video! I canceled my appointment with BMW for tomorrow. I’ve read that 90% of the drive train malfunctions are caused by spark plugs or coil packs. I order the parts from FCP. If I run into any issues, I’ll call you since you live right down the street 😂 JK.
Hey Ed i saw another video that they disconnect their batteries first before they replace the sparkplug. is that nescessary or you just forgot to put it in your video.
I think the hardest part would be to figure out which O2 sensors it is. Once you do that, you’ll need a special o2 sensor socket and make some swivel joints to replace it.
Love this! Looks “not too brutal”. I’m not overly a DIY guy for anything other than oil changes. I do have a performance shop (although likely doesn’t work on these often) where I live who quoted doing all the plugs, and the brake fluid flush for $520 CAD ($405 US) To me that seemed really reasonable by the time I buy the extensions and pivots and magnetic socket etc. What do you think? It seemed not too bad for you to do it though? Do you have a specific torque spec for the tightening too? Let me know what you think.
Without seeing the plug it could be either platinum or iridium. Sometimes you can look up the part number in google search and it should tell you. I would still replace with iridium.
just purchased a x5m this week and super happy with my purchase. Wondering what was BMW's recommended interval for changing the plugs? I was considering doing a bootmod tune myself. My vehicles currently at 80,000KMs so roughly the same miles as yours.
Thanks Ed. Mine is not tuned dealer changed at 27,000 for some reason (had a maintenance plan) and an indy place tells me to changed every 25,000 (even though im not tuned). Is that excessive?
Wouldn't it lose torque value by using the universal joints? Is 17lb torque sufficient enough with the extension and the universal joint or should I increase torque for the rear plugs?
Hey man, did this sort your drivetrain malfunction? Mine has done exactly the same as yours did tonight, accelerates and it did the series of pops then went into limp mode, it’s cleared itself once off and on again but the error is misfire in cylinder 4, fingers crossed this will be an easy fix or potentially the coil pack 🤞🏻
@@taylorsons4303 sorry. When I say tune. I’m referencing a power increase by computer reprogramming. Also known as a “chip” There are various stages of power levels depending on the company you choose and required supporting hardware. I choose to keep everything original so what was including was I’m sure was more aggressive ignition timing along with increase in turbo output and of course recalibration of air/fuel ratios. Of course this was all done by the company so , Bootmod3 (pronounced Boot Mode) but I’m just guessing what was tweaked in the computer. Honestly I uploaded it and enjoyed the increase in horsepower. Going to stage 2 or 3 will require high flow cats or catless downpipes. Also when I uploaded the tune my spark plugs had a lot of miles on them already so the demand for power caused my car to misfire thus why I changed the spark plugs when I did. They were due in about another 5,000 miles anyway and would’ve been fine to keep going if I didn’t tune it.
Dumb'ish questions: 1) Do I need to disconnect the two batteries in the back? 2) Should I be replacing the coils while doing the plugs? (88k miles...) ('15 X6M)
I thought about it and have in the past. I read about NGK. They advised against it. This is what I got from their website: NGK spark plugs feature trivalent plating. This silver or chrome-colored finish on the threads is designed to provide corrosion resistance against moisture and chemicals. The coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs are installed at the factory dry, without lubrication or anti-seize. Anti-seize can act as a lubricant, altering torque values up to 20 percent, increasing the risk of spark plug thread breakage and/or metal shell stretch. Thread breakage can sometimes involve removing the cylinder head for repair. Metal shell stretch changes the heat rating of the spark plug and can result in serious engine damage caused by pre-ignition. Do not use anti-seize or lubricant on NGK spark plugs. It is completely unnecessary and can be detrimental.
My 2014 BMW X50i with 85Kmi on the N63TU engine failed CA idle smog test due to failed valve stem seals. The issue is covered in a class action lawsuit Isley v. BMWNA. BMW policy is to change the engine out for a refurb and my portion of that work would be $8K. Instead, I elected to pay Brian at Performance Motorwerk in Dublin CA do the work using the superb AGA N63TU tool set. Elring 199-440 seals are the best choice. It’s not a question of IF but WHEN this will happen to all N63TU S63TU engines, so be forewarned.

Ed, today I was quoted $695 from the dealer for changing the spark plugs on my 2014 X5 50i. Thanks for the video!!!
Glad I could save you some money!
BMW does look intimidating but that’s because no one was putting out such good content. Thanks again.
This guy is super humble and makes some of the best tutorials. Thank you for the help

This is the only car where I noticed spark plugs make a big difference in driveability!
Ed, great video. I just changed mine and that magnetic socket was perfect. Took me less than an hour to change them all. Great content as always!!
Thanks Ed, I just did mine today after watching your video...I have a 2015 X5 50i
Thanks Eddie this is so much help for doing the plugs on my 2018 X5M

damn, thanks for all the angles, it was probably a pain in the ass to get the cameras set up. I'll be doing mine soon
You’re welcome! It wasn’t too bad. I have plenty of mounts of stuff. I just had to get creative. I’m glad it was helpful.
Merci Eddie, je vais procéder au remplacement de mes bougies aussi, ton tuto me servira. Mon X5 50i à 83207 km, A+
Very nice vid. If you don't mind... What was the reason? Why did you choose this brand? Thank you!
Really enjoying your practical, straightforward videos, great stuff! Keep wrenchin' on.
Well done. I have an x6m I'll give it a try. Thanks for the tips
Ed, thanks a million bro!!!!!
Ed, buddy! You need a longer ratchet. It was painful to watch you do it with the short one, but you got it done nonetheless. Hats off to you!!!
😂😂 I knew someone was going to notice! I was probably 2 seconds away from driving down to Lowe’s and buying a ratchet.
Im a new subscriber great video, i noticed you didn't gap your spark plugs. Did you leave it stock gap?
I did gap them down slightly. Don’t quote me but I believe it was .23
I appreciate the reply, thank you
Im tuned stage 1 on my 50i can I replicate this ?
Hey Ed i saw another video that they disconnect their batteries first before they replace the sparkplug. is that nescessary or you just forgot to put it in your video.
I've never done it on any of my cars. Changed the F15 once, F85 twice and my F80 once.
Nice project👍 you definitely need a catless downpipes next step. They sounds amazing.
Great job, how do you like the plugs?
Hey Eddie, where'd you buy that spark plug socket? For the special bmw plugs?
Hey Eddie I have the exact same car as you but a 2018, I am just wondering how to do an O2 sensor replacement on the car?
I think the hardest part would be to figure out which O2 sensors it is. Once you do that, you’ll need a special o2 sensor socket and make some swivel joints to replace it.
just one dumb question: don´t you need to disconnect the battery before?
I've never done it,but since you are dealing with the ignition system it wouldn't hurt as one additional safety measure.

Hello my friend, after unscrewing the spark plugs, it does not have its type written on it. If it is platinum or iridium, how do I know its type?
Without seeing the plug it could be either platinum or iridium. Sometimes you can look up the part number in google search and it should tell you. I would still replace with iridium.
I did that and got the Brisk Racing plugs for my X6M. NGK arent that great. Try those bro if you can.
Спасибо бро, полезное видео✊🏼
Nvm, just saw it in the vid info. Thanks Eddie
What about the one closest to the back on the left side
It’s the same process. I believe that’s in the video, you need to move the radiator overflow bottle to the side.
@@eddiemcars ok perfect I was able to get it. Thank you for responding back!😀
Hey man nice video. When you started up the beast, it said 'normal recording'. Security cam? Can you recommend a specific one?
I like Blackvue and Thinkware cameras!
Can you tell me the size of remove the s63 engine spark plug socket? How many mm ,and How many point?thanks
There’s a thin walled special socket you need
Appreciated the time bro. Will do mine in 20k :)
I have a misfire on cylinder 1 on my X5M. Is that located on the front passenger side?
You are correct. On a LHD car, forward most plug on the passenger side.
@@pacadet thank you!

I believe it’s every 50 or 60k. If you’re tuned then expect more frequent replacement. Like every 20k

Wouldn't it lose torque value by using the universal joints? Is 17lb torque sufficient enough with the extension and the universal joint or should I increase torque for the rear plugs?
That could be true. I don’t like putting to much reliability on the torque wrench. I think as long as it feels tight!

@@eddiemcars Perfect, thanks buddy, I think I’ll order the 1 step colder plugs as mine is tuned Stage 2, great content as always, keep it up! 👍🏻
I know this is an old video but why are you changing your plugs? Did something happen for you to change your spark plugs?
I did a stage 1 tune and I needed to go two steps colder on plugs.

Not a dumb question.
1. You don’t need to disconnect the batteries

I just bought a 550i with n63 motor. How many miles does yours have? Any issues with injectors or valve seals? And do you have to add oil periodically
I have 50k. No issues with the injectors or valve steam seals. I do have a add a quart of oil. On a 5k oil change interval, that was 1.

They are but it’s always good practice to double check the gap before installing them.

Is it about the same for X5 35i ?
No, it’s a different engine. I updated the thumbnail to reflect the appropriate engine
Edit: Yes, once you access the plugs for the N55 it’s a similar procedure.
thanksman. Great videos. Keep up the good work!
Could I use these in a 2017 x6 50i or is it better to do the OE BOSCH plugs? Thanks in advance Ed!
If you’re tuned, or planning to tune in the future I recommend these. Otherwise, I would stick with OE or similar heat range.
You down to make a sick video edit? Your in so cal?
Sure! I’m in Near Sacramento though.
n63 is substantially different than this engine for spark plug change. 2011 n63 e70
This is the S63tu and the N63tu identical.
if going with a bm3 stage 2 tune would you reccomend replacing the coils as well?
Absolutely!
