- Panama Canal on a Sailboat - Chase the Story 33
Here we come, Pacific Ocean - we’ll be sailing across you soon enough! In this episode we are back in tropical Panama as our catamaran Cheeky Monkey traverses two continents through one of the largest engineering projects ever undertaken in the world, the Panama Canal! Near Colon on the Caribbean side of Panama we dodge some of the largest container ships on the planet as we manage to sail and navigate through one of most densely populated shipping channels and anchorages we’ve ever seen.
Cheeky Monkey gets hauled out for the first time since we’ve owned her and we begin a LOT of boat work in the hot and humid Panama sun (lesson learned: never trust a man when he only wants 30 dollars to scrape your hull in Cartagena). AND after a dark and stormy ride up the Panama Canal through the Gatun Locks to the crocodile-infested Lake Gatun and a beautiful sunny ride sailing into the Panama Canal through the Miraflores Locks we make it to the Pacific Ocean!
The crew of Cheeky Monkey went above and beyond for this one and managed to get some of the most amazing photos and videos of taking a sailboat from the Caribbean side of Panama through the Panama Canal and out into the Pacific Ocean that you’ll ever see! Enjoy!
Happy sailing everyone!

Tasha is a BEAST at maneuvering on the motor around the mariner. WOW!
I've commented on her skills before, I had the same thought when I watched that. Twin screws really help but you have to know what and how and that looked perfect!
Like butter! Real smooth. haha
Thanks guys for another great share. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of boaties who show their adventures but only a handful of you who definitely make watching all so worthwhile. Fair winds :)
+Gav Stain Thanks Gav!
As my had was bobbing to the beat I realized that I enjoy your music as well as VLOGS. Thanks for sharing such fun.
Love watching your vacation videos. Watch for the crocodiles.
that lightning shot was kool man!!! poor Charlie out cold!!! 😻
+Rick LaLande We were hoping around the boat when we realized we'd caught that shot. Great, great memories of the crossing.
Many thanks for taking us through the canal with you ... very unique experience. I knew Tasha was going to be great at the helm ... I remember when you first took delivery of the boat, she jumped right on the controls, and pretty quickly mastered things.. Good luck on your Pacific experience. Bud
Cerveza Panama y la Balboa, la favorita de muchos aqui en Panama. Lindo video.
Great video. Some others were not very happy with the restrictions in the Galapagos. I hope you have a better time.
Awesome shot of the Lightning early in the passage. Great stuff guys as always. Love your work 👍
Tash try and calm Charlie down a bit please....
Oh man, I loved everything about this! I watched it twice. Thanks for taking us along.
+Debbie Schneider Watch it again - it's still sweet :)

Your videos are so much cooler and interesting than all the other sailing videos (lovin the ship and its name)
+TacticalJack Awww. Thanks Jack!
+Chase the Story Sailing =)
Awesome guys.
Hey Guys, Love the videos you have posted and numbering each one in sequence! Now did I see solar panels on your boat? I don't recall seeing them there before. Have lots of questions; what made you guys decide on a new Cat vs the mono hall you had. Since there other bands of Cat's, what caused you to choose this particular model? How do you like your Cat compared to sailing a mono hall? I have more questions, but this will do for now. Thanks for sharing! 😊
+bill4nier Hi there - yes, the solar panels have been there since the beginning. I wrote a post about our choice of boat here: turftosurf.com/choosing-the-right-boat-fountaine-pajot-helia-44/
Perhaps this will provide some insight :-). -Tasha
Nice... getting caught-up on your videos. Been crazy busy traveling and making videos. But mostly finding Wifi. :)
+Keep Your Daydream Hey guys! Great to hear from you! You have been busy! Unfortunately the WiFi here is so terrible we can't get caught up on anyone's vids! Maybe in Tahiti! Hope you're well xx
Great job. Rob watching form Cape Cod MA.
+Rob Chevalier Enjoy! In the summer, that's one of the most beautiful spots in the world!
Tasha,Ryan and co. Yet another great video of your passage around the world. At 6.44 you raft up with what looks like a Cheoy Lee sailboat. Nice mono's I really appreciate. I watched your first lock passage live but slept in for the second (mriaflores) as was 5am ish here in Oz. But saw in a delayed time. Love them all guys ... can't wait till the next one ... safe travels and enjoy as you always seem to do.
+SaltySailorTony Hey Tony. That boat was cool and the crew were super friendly. At times it was slow going through and I was hanging out near the bow chewing the fat with their skipper. Re sleeping through the Miraflores Docks - ok this time, but don't do it again ;)
Haha ..... How long till next time???? We are going to be in Vanuatu (Port Vila, Efate) first (7day) .week of November if your near there. We own a farè in Breakas Beach Resort that we have to attend a strata meeting
7:26 would make a cool still.
awesome guys ,I just found yur channel, fair winds ,,paul
+paul stratton Thanks Paul. Hope you enjoy the videos/journey.
Awesome video as usual :)
Lol..Charlie looks like he just binged out on whatever is in the bag by his head. :) how long did the hull paint actually take? 2 days??
+Coast Life Three, in the end. And Charlie is a girl :)
Lived in Panama for 12 months. Shelter Bay marina has the best fish taco's I have ever eaten ! Not much else out there. Did you get a chance to explore the old military buildings ?
Just got done going through the locks on the Mississippi heading south
+Jeffrey Johnson Sweet! Are you doing the Great Loop? Tasha and I have done the ICW from New York to Florida and would love to travel down the Mississippi one day!
I think Charlies been hitting the rum too hard. ;-)
+Derek Backpacker We've been wondering where it's goes :D
*Can Cheeky Monkey reimburse me for a broken [F5] key on my keyboard?* I think I broke it refreshing RUclips looking for a new video from you all. lol j/k But seriously, after catching up on all of your videos over two days last weekend, the following few days have seemed to go rather slowly. ;)
I love watching these videos. There is a portion of the void in my oceanic heart that gets filled by living vicariously through your videos. lol \o/ Sorry I missed the live video feed of the Panama Canal. That would have been fun to watch.
*Keep up the great videos! Looking forward to the next installment!*
+Shad Hall You have some stamina to get through all our videos in two days! Glad you're enjoying them so much :) how much is the replacement key ;)
Haha we'll call it even. ;) Having grown up in Japan and traveled a lot (not as much as you all), I love travel & culture vlogs. I can often relate to them. *Thanks for the entertainment and safe travels!*
very nice mast shots
Congratulations!!!!!
Question please...
Why is the underside painted black?
+the artist The paint keeps the bottom from getting fouled with wildlife. You can have any color you want (or can find). Black, blue, red and grey are most common though.
Interesting, thank you!
R u one of the memebers of 'right Said Fred'?
ummmmm....so is Lance a southern news reporter? 😁
Great video! One question.... How much were the fees to use the canal?
dam i missed the live stream
hi!how much for that overhaul!
Crocodiles or Cayman in the lake??
charlie is having none of it.
How much do they charge to go through the Canal ?
Curious, what do the charge you to go through?
What was the total cost for the transit?
OH NO! Where is Liams stach?
Ryan, to cross the Panama Canal they inspect the boat to be barnacle free and have a clean bottom? Is not required to be done at the facilities inside the Panama Canal? Could be done at the Boca del Toro at lower cost, right ?
+Jose F Zayas hi Jose. We needed the work done for the Galapagos. The canal have no restrictions, as far as I know. Re Boca, they don't have the facilities to haul a catamaran. Thanks for watching mate! Ryan
St Mary's you know it will go to the north side of Cumberland island and beach her to put the bottom paint on.have 3 gallons my boat be a open deck north Carolina home built.36 ftlong 23ft wide.Have had her up to 12 knots..44 ft alot safer. But what I love about this boat she will float in 3ft Rudders up 4ft 8 in down about same dagger's down..
hay thanks for taking me with, will be a season behind but me Cat be fast how fast will you're you're cat go?? I be heading out of St Mary's river in November then down to Puerto Rico play arond and to where you are by Aug... Vessel No Problem
+derrick johnston Cool name. I hope you never get into trouble though :) We were in St Marys in Georgia once on board for Thanksgiving. Is that the same place?
Does anyone know what type of boat that is at 2:08?
ok so it's not like the turnpike where you show up get in line and throw a hand full of quarters into the exact change basket. thanks
+golfnut No. But I like your idea.
how often do you paint the bottomhull of a Cat like yours?? ???
+Benjamin York Depends on the paint and water conditions. Once a year sounds about right.
okay i'll ask again, what were the fees to pass through the canal
+golfnut It was $2,436 for the agent, transit, lines, fenders and some immigration stuff.
Just seen a picture of you two on the 99designs web site. Ha, not sure it means anything, just thought you would like to know.
They did a good job. I love it! It's fun, carefree and high visual impact. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with all of us. I quite enjoy watching your videos and look forward to your next. Best Wishes!
He hit me with a 20 lb propane tank...
⬅New subscriber here. so now i sit and watch all your videos when i should be more productive. living vicariously via cheeky monkey right now. thanks for the awesome sharing :)
+Michele Harmon Work is over-rated. Hope you enjoy the videos!
Using the canal is very expensive for a small boat - but, they've got you by the goolies to say the least. When you consider that for 100 euro you can use the entire French canal system for a year which includes X hundred locks then, how much is the Panama including agent fees etc- 2000 dollars? It's over the top but that's the way it goes. For a boat under ten meters would it not be better to take it by transporter. Or is that illegal ?
I've been on that road from Colon (Caribbean side) to Panama City, and I'm note sure a boat/trailer would work too well with all the pot holes! It would probably cost more anyway than the canal. Overall, Panama relies on the revenue from the canal to pretty much run the country, whereas France has a few other things to rely on than the fees from their canals :)
Thanks for the information. Yes, of course the canal is for Panama of prime importance but I think they could make using the canal a bit more user friendly for the smaller man. Or, do they not really want small man business.
What does it cost to go to the pacific side
As I recall, La Vagabond mentioned the cost for them was ~$2,500...I imagine it would be more for a cat.
wow a lot I think!
well aug1 got hit up side face by a friend of friend after a great sail long story .5 th of Aug they put 6 titanium plait's in my face.8 th was back on boat for my 6 yr anniversary of getting me boat..looks like stuck here for court dates..found out later they was on mushrooms..Dink motor failed to start and they all was like we have jobs not like you.Told them would get then to land come sun up that can't see good ..seen him a week after I was out asked why he said wanted to kill me take boat cycles and ssi check... pray for me people thanks .eye has to be adjusted after I heal more.
