like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
FYI, you can also use the network port on your speaker to bridge another device in a different part of your house. E.g. I use my playbar to feed my XBox with internet for online gaming(Works like a champ)
Great video tutorial on the basics- I wanted to clarify a few things as I've used and implemented sons in client setups for many years. Just to clarify- (some of this has been mentioned by others) Any Sonos can be a solo device as long as the first device is connected to the network via ethernet (the bridge is the cheapest to do this with) Sonos creates its own wifi network separate from yours that each device accesses and the sons apps do as well- apps that run the remote app must still be on the same wifi network that your router is transmitting (you must be on the same VLan) The Sonos device itself is sourcing the music from the web if you choose a network based source like pandora or lastfm, spotify) If you specifically say to play music from your device (play from my iTunes on my phone for instance) and you leave the wifi network the music will stop. If you choose to play music on one of your computers in house and you leave the house- it will continue to play. You can even set up an ad-hoc network with an airport express (with no internet connection) and play music from your computer or phone within the system. (Say you go on vacation in someplace and the room has no internet- no problem) The system calculates the distance of each speaker form each other to maintain audio synchronization- whether your house is 1000sq ft or 10,000 sq ft.
Thanks Garrison Gunter. Very informative. My knowledge of the devices and capabilities have grown since owning this setup. The sound quality, ease of use, and access to a fairly robust catalog of apps is pretty impressive.
I bought a Play 1 from Target before Christmas when they tossed in the bridge for a penny. I was impressed with the build quality and the apps ease of use. Set-up was easy and straight-forward. But the sound quality is outstanding. Way better than my stereo system I paid three times as much for. I will probably buy another Play 1 for the complete stereo effect and to play different songs at the same time.
Last week I was outside clear my driveway of snow, I could hear the Play 1. It was next to the outside wall and I cranked it up to 9. All with my iPhone remotely. I recommended the playbar to my mother for her TV.
About 2 years ago I got a Bridge, a Play:5 and a Playbar. I've got the Playbar to work as a speaker for the TV in my bedroom, but it's never played music or worked off the App. Instead, I control the volume with my TV remote control. Mr. Ross is correct about the solid build of these products. My Play:5 ($470) works fine as a doorstop. Just buy a JBL or Beats bluetooth speaker; they work.
The speakers themselves receive the music directly from streaming services, the app is only a remote control. That way there are no interruptions and you do not have to be in the house. Your phone doesn't even have to be turned on! Its very cool.
Yes, you are right. The Review is wrong with regard to this. I tested it myself. Start streaming to sonos, then power off your iPhone and music will not stop. So it has nothing to do with his wife's carrier's 4G network. The Sonos players are computers themselves. Once you tell it to start streaming music, the system internally stream from the source you specify such as pandora. It will not stop until your home network is cut off or until you push the stop button on the player or the sonos app. The phone does not even have to be on.
hey great review.. 1 question. The speaker only plays through the app only? What if im just playing movies on my laptop or watching youtube videos. Will it play off that too?
sonos speakers actually pull music directly through the internet with the cpu inside the units. ur sonos app is merely a remote that's why they are able to do the so called "multitasking" on ur phone. ur phone app is not the one that's playing music. sonos is awesome lol
Also another really cool feature is that when you have a *BRIDGE* plugged in to a router you can actually plug any device into any of the *SONOS* Speaker(s)' Ethernet port(s) and the device will connect through *SONOSnet.* The *SONOSnet* signal is repeated by every speaker in the system so if you have a SONOS speaker in a far part of the house the has weak WiFi (but the SONOS Speaker has a decent *SONOSnet* connection) then you can plug a WiFi Extender into the SONOS Speaker in the far area of the house.
Great video, explains the setup well. I understand very recently that the bridge is no longer required unless you have poor wifi signal in your home. I will be purchasing the Play 3 to replace my Bose Soundock Airplay which quite frankly is a pain to use. I hope that streaming doesn't crack up / skip the same way my airplay device does :(

Deleted and re-installed the app. The display was different, it walked me [unsuccessfully] through steps to set up Sonos but it still looked nothing like the setup in this video. It wanted me to power up the Sonos (which entailed unplugging it and re-plugging it). Then it said I'd get a flashing white light for a minute (I did) that would turn into a flashing green light --I didn't get a green light, the white light just turned solid. After a couple more steps it wanted me to look for Sonos in my iPhone's Wifi, Sonos didn't show up among my choices of network. Then it wanted me to connect the ethernet cable; I did. Still couldn't get Sonos to connect. Yours, Mr. Ross, is the third "set up" video I've tried today. I'll try one more. So far, all three have been mostly about features and how to use features, with only brief instructions on setting the device up.
Thanks for this review.. Just cancelled my sonos 1 purchase from amazon. Was under the impression that I could still use the speaker wirelessly, just couldn't use it too far from my router. Your video confirmed that that was incorrect. And the bridge is now £37/$62... so not willing to just spunk that, when everyone else got it for free. Bit annoying... Time to think it out again. Maybe you should consider buying sonos now. They (as stated above) released an update so that you could use the system without a bridge. (Features like pairing a PLAYBAR with a SUB and/or two Play:_s still require a bridge, but one speaker will work fine without a bridge)
Since the SONOS update this week, you don't need the bridge anymore. If you have a bridge you can use it as a signal booster. The bridge is also disconitnued and instead SONOS have released the BOOSTER which is basically the bridge but newer and not vital.
Kevin Ross Could I just say that *SONOS* normally recommends placing your *BRIDGE* roughly 1ft away from your router, and not directly on top, as that is likely to cause Wireless Interference.
You can use your sonos speaker as a bridge. If you use the ether net cable and plug it into your modem it will control all the other speakers through the one that is plugged into the net... so you don't really have to buy the bridge if this application will work for you.
casey bargar The *BRIDGE* is for when you get a weak WiFi signal to your *SONOS* Speakers and is available for the people who do not want a speaker where their router is (like me.)
You make it sound like your phone is doing the work and streaming music through the controller into the sonos system. That is not the case. The sonos controller is just that, a controller. The sonos system plays everything straight from the Internet via your router, you just tell it what to play. For example, you could play Pandora, turn off your phone and sonos would have no problem playing that station all day. Other than that, excellent review! Thanks.
Might want to take another look at what is going on "behind" the scenes. If I start streaming streaming say Google music, Amazon music, Apple music, Pandora (you get the idea). As long as that Playlist is, it will continue to play until someone stops/pauses or changes the music. it doesn't switch to the person's broadband connection to stream, it goes to the source. The ONLY way that it MIGHT switch to pulling it broadband from like your phone is if you were playing music PHYSICALLY on your phone. A way to prove that it is pulling DIRECTLY from the streaming services l I keep I mentioned is, start streaming the music from a service; now take that battery out (don't power down, pull the battery so it's INSTANT. You'll see that it continues to play. Also, something you didn't mention, the Sonos system regardless of the # (up to its max) of speakers and playing different music on each, it will only take one "channel" of your network. This is because Sonos creates it's OWN network of WIFI.
RUclips wouldn't let me reply directly to you Viviënne Sluman, but I just wanted to say that the speakers are plenty loud. I listen to a variety of music and it handles everything I throw at it.
I love my Play1! It seems to me that the source app (iPhone or Android phone/ipad/ipod) - is not responsible for streaming the audio (unless the audio source is from that controlling device). So for example - your source could be a NAS drive, Amazon Cloud, Google Cloud or Internet Radio source. Playing audio from these resources are initiated from your app - and that's it. One you initiate 'playing an album' from your NAS drive - you can turn your phone/ipoad off. Once you are playing a radio station - you can turn your phone/ipoad off. The only time your phone/ipoad is used after initiating a 'play resource' command is if your audio file is actual on that controlling device (phone/ipoad). I use my Play1 as a daily wake up alarm to play an internet radio station. The controlling app (phone/ipaod) is only need to set this alarm once. This is a really cool speaker. And it sounds great!

So John, what your saying then is if I use my Rdio account from my phone, to initiate it, and then leave my house, the songs will continue to play without me being there and without adding usage to my phone when off wi-fi? thanks for the info

well nowadays you only need the Sonos Boost, basically the Bridge replacement. You can technically setup a speaker without a Boost or Bridge but they add extra WiFi strength so it's recommended.
Struggling to set up 3 play 1 speakers since last Saturday! No sound! Using the sonos app on a Samsung Tab 7 but no luck! Very disappointed and frustrated!
@@KRAZEEIZATION Did the app prompt you to update any firmware on the speakers? This is an old video, which I've since updated the info, but the app should just act as a remote. Once you set it to play something from the app then the speakers do all of the work from there (basically). There is a Sonos app for the computer... Have you tried that?
I think there's some confusion over where the Sonos plays the music from here. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure your phone is acting as a means of giving the Sonos commands. So when you play a playlist it's telling the Sonos to stream that music from your server / the internet. It's not streaming it from your phone to the Sonos, so not playing through the mobile data network as you mentioned. You could turn off your phone and it will continue to play.
Kevin, I am a novice and would like for you to do a demo on how to set up Sonos with wired in ceiling speakers with 8 zones. I love the Sonos concept, however, I am not interest in purchasing any of the Sonos speakers because my home is wired with Cat5 wiring for in ceiling speakers. I need to know what all I need to purchase and how to install the Sonos peripherals.
Then you need a sonos connect. It will connect to your stereo system. Problem would be that you can't stream different music to different room because sonos sees your system as one room. You would need multiple sonos connect:AMPS and connect each rooms speakers to them. They would all be stored together as all your speaker wiring is homed back to your stereo. So, if you want to separate 5 rooms, you will need 5 Sonos connect:Amps to run those speakers.
I've got Sonos playbar n sub it was expensive (£1200) but the sound is so Gd... Only down side it doesn't support dts but not having 5.1 it doesn't bother me and the sound is just quality very very very impressed :-)

He was incorrect on that. This really needs to be clarified. The streaming music is being pulled from the Bridge that is connected to the Internet router. The app on the phone is merely the controller - just like your TV controller. With your tv the controller merely changes channels, but the channels are not coming through the controller to the TV - it's coming directly from your router or cable service. Same thing here...the whole reason you need the bridge. You can run music to Sonos speaker from just your phone. It has to be connected to the internet. In addition you can't use the Sonos app to listen to music on your phone. Hope this clarifies that one point. Great review otherwise.

Can I plug the bridge into a Cat5 wall plug as oppposed to the router directly? My router is in the basement, and I want to install 2 speakers in the kitchen on the main floor.
+Robert Mulligan Yep. It doesn't need to go directly through the router. You just need the signal, and if it's coming through the wall plug then you're good. I used to have my router in the basement and I ran all of it up through the wall outlets with no issue with routers and extenders.
Well, very hard to capture the full sound on the video, but this speaker blows me away every time I turn it on. Incredible sound coming from such a small device.
Great Video, was planning on using the play 1 at my wedding while everyone is enjoying the Champagne before the band arrives but have a question. If the location of the wedding doesn't have a wireless network can I still somehow create my own wireless network and play music through the speaker using my phone, ipad or mac? Could it be something as simple as using a normal CAT 5 cable between the speaker and the laptop?? All a bit too technical for me to understand. Thanks in advance for your response.
The play 1 doesn't have a "line in" either via a RCA/Audio jack, or direct ethernet. The Play 5 however does have a direct line in, but quite frankly at that point, this particular use case could be filled by another (less expensive) set up. I have researched this question for you, and Sonos states that this would be a more complicated set up than what you may want to pursue.
Can someone tell me what the range is? I'm thinking of getting the bridge and the play 1. The play 1 would be in the bathroom and the bridge would be in the living room next to my router not sure if the distance would be to far?

You may have already found your solution +Ivan “Quetzalcoatl” B , but it's super easy. I just did this again (without the bridge) and the mobile app walks you through the whole process, which is like two steps. I do not use the bridge anymore and I actually have these speakers tied into a Smart Things smart home setup without issue. Still loving them!
I know this device is not meant to be portable and needs to be plugged in to operate. If I unplug the device from the wall and move it to an area I want to listen music, is this going to cause any issues that may damage the internal components of the device? Thank you.
Harry Trejo No, there shouldn't be any problems... That is as long as you're not throwing it around ;) All of the settings will be saved and you shouldn't have any issues with having to reset a connection to the wifi. I occasionally move these around for certain occasions. It's a great piece of tech.
How easy is it to swap between phones? Can you connect a computer to them? Does it need to be connected to the bridge or even a network to get one working on its own?
+TheToastGod Easy to swap, there is a desktop controller for a computer (to stream your music), and you don't need the bridge anymore. I actually use the bridge as a "bridge" for other devices in the house now.

And if you do, do u know how that works? For example, I have a samsung soundbar already. Am I able to plug that into a connect and play my music thru there??
I do not have the connect, but a family member does have the connect with amp. He has this connected to a set of wired passive speakers. If you already have a receiver (obviously with a built-in amp), then you only need the connect without the amp.
I'm probably going to pick this up this weekend. I only wish it steamed RUclips AND wish it allowed you to hook it up to the tv. It pisses me off that they only make that function for the items that cost damn near $500.
Sonos recently released an update to allow connection to wifi. You will still need a bridge if you plan on pairing in a home theatre setup - it needs it to sync the speakers.
How can Sonos possibly connect with my Wifi when there is no way to enter my Wifi password into the device? Is it supposed to read that password from my iPhone? Is there a video somewhere that shows how to set it up?
Jeff Zaun You configure it with your phone or computer, setting up your wireless password. It has a built-in wireless communication protocol for a first time setup (among other stuff). These SONOS are an amazing devices. I have a Play 3 myself and I am thinking about buying a Play 1. Also you don't need a bridge if you have more than one SONOS, like this guy has in the video. You can just add devices and they manage their sound network by itself.
So this is the one to buy if you have android devices. The bose soundtouch are strictly IOS? I've been needing speakers setup in the office, but I have no apple products..
SONOS works on Android and iOS (mobile) and Mac and PC (Computer.) The Bose sound link lineup uses Bluetooth so it should work on android. If you haven't decided yet, any speaker labelled "Bluetooth" will work with android.
i watch a lot of video on youtube on programs like dateline and or 48 hours or FBI files,sometimes the audio on youtube is not very loud,can i use this to listen to this videos
Is there a way to block someone from a speaker (play 1, 3, or 5). For example if i had one in my office and I don't want my kids/ wife to access to that speaker.
Anthony Altamirano In our personal use case (on the same account), we "un group" the speakers so that they then have the ability to play as individual speakers. So, let's say I'm streaming my music on Pandora upstairs, and my wife can stream her music (on another streaming account) on the speaker downstairs. They become independent of each other and are streaming different services independently on each speaker. I haven't attempted to see if there's a "lock out" function per se, but you'd have to be intentional to regroup the speakers.

I understand all about the grouping and activating each speaker. i just wondered if my wife or daughter download the app and add speakers to their app if i could lock mine out so they wont be able to control it. But I suppose as long as they don't hit the pairing buttons on the speaker they wont have access to it. It will only show or allow only the speakers you are paired with.

PLAYBARs can be paired with a SUB and two Play:1s or Play:3s to make a 5.1 surround sound system, (or a PLAYBAR and sub for 3.1 and PLAYBAR and two Play:1s or Play:3s for 5.0 surround sound)

What battery? There is no battery on the sonos. It's wired to power. It also has no effect on your phone battery as the phone is only a remote control for sonos.
What would be the effect of set up for connecting this to the computer and or playing from the phone. I only have Wi-Fi at the current time I don't have accessibility to a lan cable??
I did a much needed update to this video because once this was posted, the bridge and LAN was not necessary. It's completely wireless, so you'd be good to go. Let me know if that didn't answer your question 👊💥

You use the sonos app. It can login to many 3rd party sources to play music or Internet radio. I have it connected to many streaming services and can access all my channels or playlists from within sonos controller app.
Great video Kevin! Answered a ton of my questions. I am remodeling my entire house and am looking for a up to date whole home audio setup. I really want to do Sonos but have one major concern that I'm having trouble finding an answer to. I see these speakers have a power cable. If one was to wall mount the speakers I don't see a way to really hide the power cable. In most areas it's against code to run a power cable behind a wall unless the cable is rated to do so. Any ideas?
I know that when we remodeled our basement that I had the electrician place wall plugs in various locations where we were going to have certain devices hanging on the walls (i.e. a wall mounted television, wall mounted electric fireplace, etc). Of course that may be a bit more cumbersome. Have you looked at the amp option? www.sonos.com/shop/products/connectamp This may be your solution and I know my brother-in-law has turned his existing hardwired setup into a Sonos ecosystem.
+MrDavidh1990 Yes, I'm actually doing that right now (as I type this). The bridge is no longer necessary, however what I've converted the bridge into is actually a bridge for my Internet connection on some our Android devices in the house.

Setting up the play 1's was extremely easy. The directions to do so are included in the box. You install the app first on a device. Then, you plug in a Play 1, hold down the buttons (as instructed in the pamphlet) and it will ask you if you want to pair the speaker to the bridge. Or, you can just push the button on the bridge and you'll get the same message for each speaker. It will ask you to label each speaker and also ask if you want Stereo vs. Mono (if they'll be together, or in separate rooms). It's seriously very easy to do.
Gus Leytte You no longer need a bridge. Sonos now has a WiFi only option that does not require a device wired to the router. Also if you have 2 Play 1's, you can configure them as a Stereo pair. The sum of the 2 together is greater than the 2 as separate units. So in a larger room this configuration is excellent !!
Funny about the multitasking. Your phone is the remote. Imagine you turn on your tv with the remote and walk outside with the remote to the mall. Would that turn off the tv? Of course not. It's not streaming through the phone, the Sonos speaker and the bridge take care of that. :-)
First time ive watched this guy but what you dont understand is that the music he is playing is through his phone, so how sonos manages to keep the music playing when the phone is no longer in the area is what he was referring to. It would be similar to an external hard drive wirelessly playing a movie on ur tv and then leaving and taking the hard drive with you while still keeping the movie playing.
Ryan Dudek No he is not. The phone is a remote control, it's not streaming music FROM the phone, like with a NAS/External drive. You _CAN_ play music from your iPhone, but you need the WD100 wireless dock and you need to put your iPhone inside the dock or it won't work. Only then can you actually play music from the iPhone.
Ryan Dudek I never said you need a dock to play music from a phone. Seriously, play some music with your phone and turn the phone OFF. The music WILL keep playing, because the music is not coming from the phone!!! It is a REMOTE CONTROL !!! BUT... Try to stream music from RUclips to your Sonos. IMPOSSIBLE!!! Unless... you buy the docking station WD100. Then it's possible, because the dock allows you to play music from your phone. It's not that difficult.
Good review! Just a small question though... I have been hesitating for a long time and decided to try sonos. If I like it I do want to go for a 5.1 setup. I know I need a playbar and sub woofer but what would you recommend, use a play 3 or play 1 as surround speakers? It is a small living room 5x6 meters?
Nico van der Linden Those Play 1's have a very full sound to them. In my opinion you can't go wrong. I have more than one and they are great as a standalone or used together.
***** You shouldn't need to work the Play:1 in. The Play:1 will be ready to crank up the volume as soon as you get it set up. The SONOS system doesn't natively support streaming directly from a PC (without it being plugged into a Play:5.) However you can add the music that you store on your PC through the SONOS App for PC/Mac and the only requirement is that the computer is on when playing music from the 'Music Library' & that you regularly hit 'Index Music Library' in the app (on any platform.)
looking at other comments it looks like I no longer need a bridge, I plan on buying 3 of the play 1s through amazon... but I couldn't find the bridge product on amazon :L in 2016 do I still need that to connect all 3 of them to the wifi network? my plan is to get one in the living room, one in my room, and one in the kitchen (I don't cook stuff that spits oil so I'm not worried about it getting greasy, and I can just wipe it down when I'm done in the kitchen if I'm cooking) but seriously, do I need a bridge in 2016? or can I just go ahead and buy the speakers and connect wirelessly to internet with them? :/ I appreciate this is an old video now so anyone who can help i'd greatly appreciate it :/ I wanna make sure I know what I'm buying and what I need so I can get straight into using them when they arrive, but I don't wanna purchase via amazon until I know what I need, if that makes sense :L anyway, do I need a bridge currently(2016) or not? I have an updated video of the play 1 with a few more details, but at this time, no not directly. You could do it however via Airplay, which the updated play one has that capability built in (Airplay that is) .
There are a few questions I missed answered in this review. If you could help answer I would appreciate it. Can I connect this to my windows 10 computer and use it liken any other speaker? If not, do you have a suggestion for a wireless speaker with really good sound that can be connected to my PC like a classical speaker?
The Sonos One has more capabilities since this review, but I honestly wouldn't suggest it as a wireless speaker for your PC. I would suggest something like the Audioengine A2+ (for the low profile) paired with the Audioengine B1 bluetooth music streaming device. The A5+ has bluetooth built into it, however the speaker has a much larger footprint. The Audioengine B1 can be paired with other "analog" speakers if you are already have some you'd like to use, but definitely dig into this option to see if it would fit your needs. I left those links to the Audioengine in the video's description.
Unfortunately the Audioengine speakers aren't suitable in the least. But I think I've found what I was looking for in the Libratone Zipp 2 so no worries. All the best :)
That's too bad about the audioengine. That's likely my next move to have some monitors for video/audio editing on my computer. However, I'm glad you found another option. Hope they work out.
To be honest, I think you'd be happy with a couple of play 1's that you can place throughout your house (or wherever you need them) for the party. Otherwise I'd go with a Play 5.

like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

FYI, you can also use the network port on your speaker to bridge another device in a different part of your house. E.g. I use my playbar to feed my XBox with internet for online gaming(Works like a champ)
Great video tutorial on the basics- I wanted to clarify a few things as I've used and implemented sons in client setups for many years. Just to clarify- (some of this has been mentioned by others)
Any Sonos can be a solo device as long as the first device is connected to the network via ethernet (the bridge is the cheapest to do this with)
Sonos creates its own wifi network separate from yours that each device accesses and the sons apps do as well- apps that run the remote app must still be on the same wifi network that your router is transmitting (you must be on the same VLan)
The Sonos device itself is sourcing the music from the web if you choose a network based source like pandora or lastfm, spotify) If you specifically say to play music from your device (play from my iTunes on my phone for instance) and you leave the wifi network the music will stop. If you choose to play music on one of your computers in house and you leave the house- it will continue to play.
You can even set up an ad-hoc network with an airport express (with no internet connection) and play music from your computer or phone within the system. (Say you go on vacation in someplace and the room has no internet- no problem)
The system calculates the distance of each speaker form each other to maintain audio synchronization- whether your house is 1000sq ft or 10,000 sq ft.

The sound quality, ease of use, and access to a fairly robust catalog of apps is pretty impressive.
I bought a Play 1 from Target before Christmas when they tossed in the bridge for a penny. I was impressed with the build quality and the apps ease of use. Set-up was easy and straight-forward. But the sound quality is outstanding. Way better than my stereo system I paid three times as much for. I will probably buy another Play 1 for the complete stereo effect and to play different songs at the same time.

Last week I was outside clear my driveway of snow, I could hear the Play 1. It was next to the outside wall and I cranked it up to 9. All with my iPhone remotely. I recommended the playbar to my mother for her TV.
About 2 years ago I got a Bridge, a Play:5 and a Playbar. I've got the Playbar to work as a speaker for the TV in my bedroom, but it's never played music or worked off the App. Instead, I control the volume with my TV remote control.
Mr. Ross is correct about the solid build of these products. My Play:5 ($470) works fine as a doorstop. Just buy a JBL or Beats bluetooth speaker; they work.
The speakers themselves receive the music directly from streaming services, the app is only a remote control. That way there are no interruptions and you do not have to be in the house. Your phone doesn't even have to be turned on! Its very cool.
Yes, you are right. The Review is wrong with regard to this. I tested it myself. Start streaming to sonos, then power off your iPhone and music will not stop. So it has nothing to do with his wife's carrier's 4G network. The Sonos players are computers themselves. Once you tell it to start streaming music, the system internally stream from the source you specify such as pandora. It will not stop until your home network is cut off or until you push the stop button on the player or the sonos app. The phone does not even have to be on.

sonos speakers actually pull music directly through the internet with the cpu inside the units. ur sonos app is merely a remote that's why they are able to do the so called "multitasking" on ur phone. ur phone app is not the one that's playing music. sonos is awesome lol

Also another really cool feature is that when you have a *BRIDGE* plugged in to a router you can actually plug any device into any of the *SONOS* Speaker(s)' Ethernet port(s) and the device will connect through *SONOSnet.*
The *SONOSnet* signal is repeated by every speaker in the system so if you have a SONOS speaker in a far part of the house the has weak WiFi (but the SONOS Speaker has a decent *SONOSnet* connection) then you can plug a WiFi Extender into the SONOS Speaker in the far area of the house.

Great video, explains the setup well. I understand very recently that the bridge is no longer required unless you have poor wifi signal in your home. I will be purchasing the Play 3 to replace my Bose Soundock Airplay which quite frankly is a pain to use. I hope that streaming doesn't crack up / skip the same way my airplay device does :(

Deleted and re-installed the app. The display was different, it walked me [unsuccessfully] through steps to set up Sonos but it still looked nothing like the setup in this video. It wanted me to power up the Sonos (which entailed unplugging it and re-plugging it). Then it said I'd get a flashing white light for a minute (I did) that would turn into a flashing green light --I didn't get a green light, the white light just turned solid. After a couple more steps it wanted me to look for Sonos in my iPhone's Wifi, Sonos didn't show up among my choices of network. Then it wanted me to connect the ethernet cable; I did. Still couldn't get Sonos to connect.
Yours, Mr. Ross, is the third "set up" video I've tried today. I'll try one more. So far, all three have been mostly about features and how to use features, with only brief instructions on setting the device up.

Your video confirmed that that was incorrect. And the bridge is now £37/$62... so not willing to just spunk that, when everyone else got it for free. Bit annoying... Time to think it out again. Maybe you should consider buying sonos now. They (as stated above) released an update so that you could use the system without a bridge. (Features like pairing a PLAYBAR with a SUB and/or two Play:_s still require a bridge, but one speaker will work fine without a bridge)
Since the SONOS update this week, you don't need the bridge anymore. If you have a bridge you can use it as a signal booster. The bridge is also disconitnued and instead SONOS have released the BOOSTER which is basically the bridge but newer and not vital.
The bridge has not been discontinued. The boost is meant to be a stronger bridge but for twice the price.

The boost is for houses that struggle with wifi connectivity and the bridge for normal houses... but yes they serve the same purpose effectively.

Kevin Ross Could I just say that *SONOS* normally recommends placing your *BRIDGE* roughly 1ft away from your router, and not directly on top, as that is likely to cause Wireless Interference.
You can use your sonos speaker as a bridge. If you use the ether net cable and plug it into your modem it will control all the other speakers through the one that is plugged into the net... so you don't really have to buy the bridge if this application will work for you.
casey bargar The *BRIDGE* is for when you get a weak WiFi signal to your *SONOS* Speakers and is available for the people who do not want a speaker where their router is (like me.)

You make it sound like your phone is doing the work and streaming music through the controller into the sonos system. That is not the case. The sonos controller is just that, a controller. The sonos system plays everything straight from the Internet via your router, you just tell it what to play. For example, you could play Pandora, turn off your phone and sonos would have no problem playing that station all day. Other than that, excellent review! Thanks.

Might want to take another look at what is going on "behind" the scenes.
If I start streaming streaming say Google music, Amazon music, Apple music, Pandora (you get the idea). As long as that Playlist is, it will continue to play until someone stops/pauses or changes the music. it doesn't switch to the person's broadband connection to stream, it goes to the source.
The ONLY way that it MIGHT switch to pulling it broadband from like your phone is if you were playing music PHYSICALLY on your phone. A way to prove that it is pulling DIRECTLY from the streaming services l I keep I mentioned is, start streaming the music from a service; now take that battery out (don't power down, pull the battery so it's INSTANT. You'll see that it continues to play.
Also, something you didn't mention, the Sonos system regardless of the # (up to its max) of speakers and playing different music on each, it will only take one "channel" of your network. This is because Sonos creates it's OWN network of WIFI.

I love my Play1! It seems to me that the source app (iPhone or Android phone/ipad/ipod) - is not responsible for streaming the audio (unless the audio source is from that controlling device). So for example - your source could be a NAS drive, Amazon Cloud, Google Cloud or Internet Radio source. Playing audio from these resources are initiated from your app - and that's it. One you initiate 'playing an album' from your NAS drive - you can turn your phone/ipoad off. Once you are playing a radio station - you can turn your phone/ipoad off. The only time your phone/ipoad is used after initiating a 'play resource' command is if your audio file is actual on that controlling device (phone/ipoad). I use my Play1 as a daily wake up alarm to play an internet radio station. The controlling app (phone/ipaod) is only need to set this alarm once. This is a really cool speaker. And it sounds great!

well nowadays you only need the Sonos Boost, basically the Bridge replacement. You can technically setup a speaker without a Boost or Bridge but they add extra WiFi strength so it's recommended.

Struggling to set up 3 play 1 speakers since last Saturday! No sound! Using the sonos app on a Samsung Tab 7 but no luck! Very disappointed and frustrated!

Once you set it to play something from the app then the speakers do all of the work from there (basically). There is a Sonos app for the computer... Have you tried that?

I think there's some confusion over where the Sonos plays the music from here. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure your phone is acting as a means of giving the Sonos commands. So when you play a playlist it's telling the Sonos to stream that music from your server / the internet. It's not streaming it from your phone to the Sonos, so not playing through the mobile data network as you mentioned. You could turn off your phone and it will continue to play.
Kevin, I am a novice and would like for you to do a demo on how to set up Sonos with wired in ceiling speakers with 8 zones. I love the Sonos concept, however, I am not interest in purchasing any of the Sonos speakers because my home is wired with Cat5 wiring for in ceiling speakers. I need to know what all I need to purchase and how to install the Sonos peripherals.
Then you need a sonos connect. It will connect to your stereo system. Problem would be that you can't stream different music to different room because sonos sees your system as one room.
You would need multiple sonos connect:AMPS and connect each rooms speakers to them. They would all be stored together as all your speaker wiring is homed back to your stereo. So, if you want to separate 5 rooms, you will need 5 Sonos connect:Amps to run those speakers.
I've got Sonos playbar n sub it was expensive (£1200) but the sound is so Gd... Only down side it doesn't support dts but not having 5.1 it doesn't bother me and the sound is just quality very very very impressed :-)

He was incorrect on that. This really needs to be clarified.
The streaming music is being pulled from the Bridge that is connected to the Internet router. The app on the phone is merely the controller - just like your TV controller. With your tv the controller merely changes channels, but the channels are not coming through the controller to the TV - it's coming directly from your router or cable service.
Same thing here...the whole reason you need the bridge. You can run music to Sonos speaker from just your phone. It has to be connected to the internet. In addition you can't use the Sonos app to listen to music on your phone.

Can I plug the bridge into a Cat5 wall plug as oppposed to the router directly? My router is in the basement, and I want to install 2 speakers in the kitchen on the main floor.
+Robert Mulligan Yep. It doesn't need to go directly through the router. You just need the signal, and if it's coming through the wall plug then you're good. I used to have my router in the basement and I ran all of it up through the wall outlets with no issue with routers and extenders.

Great Video, was planning on using the play 1 at my wedding while everyone is enjoying the Champagne before the band arrives but have a question. If the location of the wedding doesn't have a wireless network can I still somehow create my own wireless network and play music through the speaker using my phone, ipad or mac? Could it be something as simple as using a normal CAT 5 cable between the speaker and the laptop?? All a bit too technical for me to understand.

The play 1 doesn't have a "line in" either via a RCA/Audio jack, or direct ethernet. The Play 5 however does have a direct line in, but quite frankly at that point, this particular use case could be filled by another (less expensive) set up. I have researched this question for you, and Sonos states that this would be a more complicated set up than what you may want to pursue.
Sonos requires an active network connection so that wouldn't have worked ;).

You may have already found your solution +Ivan “Quetzalcoatl” B , but it's super easy. I just did this again (without the bridge) and the mobile app walks you through the whole process, which is like two steps. I do not use the bridge anymore and I actually have these speakers tied into a Smart Things smart home setup without issue. Still loving them!

I know this device is not meant to be portable and needs to be plugged in to operate. If I unplug the device from the wall and move it to an area I want to listen music, is this going to cause any issues that may damage the internal components of the device? Thank you.

All of the settings will be saved and you shouldn't have any issues with having to reset a connection to the wifi. I occasionally move these around for certain occasions. It's a great piece of tech.

+TheToastGod Easy to swap, there is a desktop controller for a computer (to stream your music), and you don't need the bridge anymore. I actually use the bridge as a "bridge" for other devices in the house now.

I do not have the connect, but a family member does have the connect with amp. He has this connected to a set of wired passive speakers. If you already have a receiver (obviously with a built-in amp), then you only need the connect without the amp.
I'm probably going to pick this up this weekend. I only wish it steamed RUclips AND wish it allowed you to hook it up to the tv. It pisses me off that they only make that function for the items that cost damn near $500.

It was most likely hardwired into the router. You do need the bridge to go wireless.
Sonos recently released an update to allow connection to wifi. You will still need a bridge if you plan on pairing in a home theatre setup - it needs it to sync the speakers.

Jeff Zaun You configure it with your phone or computer, setting up your wireless password. It has a built-in wireless communication protocol for a first time setup (among other stuff). These SONOS are an amazing devices. I have a Play 3 myself and I am thinking about buying a Play 1. Also you don't need a bridge if you have more than one SONOS, like this guy has in the video. You can just add devices and they manage their sound network by itself.
So this is the one to buy if you have android devices. The bose soundtouch are strictly IOS? I've been needing speakers setup in the office, but I have no apple products..
SONOS works on Android and iOS (mobile) and Mac and PC (Computer.) The Bose sound link lineup uses Bluetooth so it should work on android. If you haven't decided yet, any speaker labelled "Bluetooth" will work with android.

Is there a way to block someone from a speaker (play 1, 3, or 5). For example if i had one in my office and I don't want my kids/ wife to access to that speaker.
Anthony Altamirano In our personal use case (on the same account), we "un group" the speakers so that they then have the ability to play as individual speakers. So, let's say I'm streaming my music on Pandora upstairs, and my wife can stream her music (on another streaming account) on the speaker downstairs. They become independent of each other and are streaming different services independently on each speaker.
I haven't attempted to see if there's a "lock out" function per se, but you'd have to be intentional to regroup the speakers.

I understand all about the grouping and activating each speaker. i just wondered if my wife or daughter download the app and add speakers to their app if i could lock mine out so they wont be able to control it. But I suppose as long as they don't hit the pairing buttons on the speaker they wont have access to it. It will only show or allow only the speakers you are paired with.

PLAYBARs can be paired with a SUB and two Play:1s or Play:3s to make a 5.1 surround sound system, (or a PLAYBAR and sub for 3.1 and PLAYBAR and two Play:1s or Play:3s for 5.0 surround sound)
As for European radio stations, (in the app) go Radio by Tunein then tap Local Radio and select your location.
Is the cord disconnectable? The reason is ask is I want to run the cable through a floor and wouldn't be able to if its permanently attached

What battery? There is no battery on the sonos. It's wired to power. It also has no effect on your phone battery as the phone is only a remote control for sonos.
What would be the effect of set up for connecting this to the computer and or playing from the phone. I only have Wi-Fi at the current time I don't have accessibility to a lan cable??
I did a much needed update to this video because once this was posted, the bridge and LAN was not necessary. It's completely wireless, so you'd be good to go. Let me know if that didn't answer your question 👊💥

You use the sonos app. It can login to many 3rd party sources to play music or Internet radio. I have it connected to many streaming services and can access all my channels or playlists from within sonos controller app.

I really want to do Sonos but have one major concern that I'm having trouble finding an answer to. I see these speakers have a power cable. If one was to wall mount the speakers I don't see a way to really hide the power cable. In most areas it's against code to run a power cable behind a wall unless the cable is rated to do so. Any ideas?
I know that when we remodeled our basement that I had the electrician place wall plugs in various locations where we were going to have certain devices hanging on the walls (i.e. a wall mounted television, wall mounted electric fireplace, etc).
Of course that may be a bit more cumbersome.

+MrDavidh1990 Yes, I'm actually doing that right now (as I type this). The bridge is no longer necessary, however what I've converted the bridge into is actually a bridge for my Internet connection on some our Android devices in the house.
Play 3 does not have audio in. Play five and connect boxes do.

I'm thinking of getting a sonos system, but I'm not sure where to start? I have two bridges, I'm thinking of getting a few Play 1 and perhaps a play 3 what are your thoughts? Can you, and how do you set up a pair of Play 1's?

Setting up the play 1's was extremely easy. The directions to do so are included in the box.
You install the app first on a device. Then, you plug in a Play 1, hold down the buttons (as instructed in the pamphlet) and it will ask you if you want to pair the speaker to the bridge. Or, you can just push the button on the bridge and you'll get the same message for each speaker. It will ask you to label each speaker and also ask if you want Stereo vs. Mono (if they'll be together, or in separate rooms).
It's seriously very easy to do.
Also, clarification - you don't need a bridge for each speaker. One bridge covers (I think) 32 sonos speakers.

You no longer need a bridge. Sonos now has a WiFi only option that does not require a device wired to the router.
Also if you have 2 Play 1's, you can configure them as a Stereo pair. The sum of the 2 together is greater than the 2 as separate units. So in a larger room this configuration is excellent !!

Funny about the multitasking. Your phone is the remote. Imagine you turn on your tv with the remote and walk outside with the remote to the mall. Would that turn off the tv? Of course not. It's not streaming through the phone, the Sonos speaker and the bridge take care of that. :-)
First time ive watched this guy but what you dont understand is that the music he is playing is through his phone, so how sonos manages to keep the music playing when the phone is no longer in the area is what he was referring to. It would be similar to an external hard drive wirelessly playing a movie on ur tv and then leaving and taking the hard drive with you while still keeping the movie playing.
Ryan Dudek No he is not. The phone is a remote control, it's not streaming music FROM the phone, like with a NAS/External drive. You _CAN_ play music from your iPhone, but you need the WD100 wireless dock and you need to put your iPhone inside the dock or it won't work. Only then can you actually play music from the iPhone.
that is in no way true, i own a full 5.1 setup along with a play 5, and u don't need any kind of dock to play music from a phone.
Ryan Dudek I never said you need a dock to play music from a phone. Seriously, play some music with your phone and turn the phone OFF. The music WILL keep playing, because the music is not coming from the phone!!! It is a REMOTE CONTROL !!!
BUT... Try to stream music from RUclips to your Sonos. IMPOSSIBLE!!! Unless... you buy the docking station WD100. Then it's possible, because the dock allows you to play music from your phone.

Good review! Just a small question though... I have been hesitating for a long time and decided to try sonos. If I like it I do want to go for a 5.1 setup.
I know I need a playbar and sub woofer but what would you recommend, use a play 3 or play 1 as surround speakers? It is a small living room 5x6 meters?
Nico van der Linden Those Play 1's have a very full sound to them. In my opinion you can't go wrong. I have more than one and they are great as a standalone or used together.

***** You shouldn't need to work the Play:1 in. The Play:1 will be ready to crank up the volume as soon as you get it set up.
The SONOS system doesn't natively support streaming directly from a PC (without it being plugged into a Play:5.)
However you can add the music that you store on your PC through the SONOS App for PC/Mac and the only requirement is that the computer is on when playing music from the 'Music Library' & that you regularly hit 'Index Music Library' in the app (on any platform.)

looking at other comments it looks like I no longer need a bridge, I plan on buying 3 of the play 1s through amazon... but I couldn't find the bridge product on amazon :L in 2016 do I still need that to connect all 3 of them to the wifi network? my plan is to get one in the living room, one in my room, and one in the kitchen (I don't cook stuff that spits oil so I'm not worried about it getting greasy, and I can just wipe it down when I'm done in the kitchen if I'm cooking)

Hi Kevin, I appreciate if you can tell me, will I be able to stream audio while watching youtube or Netflix, this is really going to be deciding factor for me, since sonos does not support bluetooth.
I have an updated video of the play 1 with a few more details, but at this time, no not directly. You could do it however via Airplay, which the updated play one has that capability built in (Airplay that is) .

There are a few questions I missed answered in this review. If you could help answer I would appreciate it.
Can I connect this to my windows 10 computer and use it liken any other speaker?
If not, do you have a suggestion for a wireless speaker with really good sound that can be connected to my PC like a classical speaker?
The Sonos One has more capabilities since this review, but I honestly wouldn't suggest it as a wireless speaker for your PC.
I would suggest something like the Audioengine A2+ (for the low profile) paired with the Audioengine B1 bluetooth music streaming device. The A5+ has bluetooth built into it, however the speaker has a much larger footprint.
The Audioengine B1 can be paired with other "analog" speakers if you are already have some you'd like to use, but definitely dig into this option to see if it would fit your needs. I left those links to the Audioengine in the video's description.

Unfortunately the Audioengine speakers aren't suitable in the least. But I think I've found what I was looking for in the Libratone Zipp 2 so no worries. All the best :)
That's too bad about the audioengine. That's likely my next move to have some monitors for video/audio editing on my computer. However, I'm glad you found another option. Hope they work out.

The bridge is no longer required. It is optional. So you could just buy the Play 1 and use it on its own.

To be honest, I think you'd be happy with a couple of play 1's that you can place throughout your house (or wherever you need them) for the party. Otherwise I'd go with a Play 5.

No, not at all. The bridge is unnecessary at this point. I'm still using these speakers, and they're completely wireless (without) the bridge.
