  • In January 2020 Abbie heads back out climb Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, this time in winter conditions. They meets up with Richard from Rich Mountain Experiences who sees them safely to the top, but along the way, Abbie realises the importance of partnering with their mental illness, rather than fighting it.

    A great video Abbie, thank you for producing it. Not only is it great for awareness of mental health issues, and ways to deal with them by doing what you love, but also how the mountains can be on relatively benign conditions, especially in light of the slight misadventure those 4 had a day or two back. For those that are planning a trip up Ben Nevis in Winter (And Spring), expect full conditions with deep snow, buried cairns, and often very poor visibility. Make sure you take a map and compass and know how to use them. Never be afraid to turn around and head down if you are way out of your comfort zone. Even with the 400+ ascents I have, sometimes I still make the decision to turn back...Last Saturday for example.

    First time I've watched your channel. Having suffered with mental health since my early teens this is a great video. I found mountain biking which has been a real change in my life. I've rode up and down Ben nevis along with snowdon pen y fan etc etc. The way I feel when out on my bike is just amazing.
    Look forward to more of these and thank you 🤟❤️

    Yes Abbie!! So glad I found your channel over this winter.. I have had a rocky ride with my mental health over last two months after having a panic attack while walking to work. Finding another outdoor RUclipsr as in yourself that has spoken openly about the difficulties of mental health has helped me. Only last week since pulling myself form a dark pace in my mind I decried to get back out to do some well over due filming for my channel. I took on the challenge of a solo winter hike across the Cairngorms and an attempt to summit Devil's point. It was the best hiking experience of my life!! While I was out filming I decided to talk the camera/my subscribers a little about what I have been going through and why I haven't been uploading any new video's since Christmas. I plan to go into more detail about mental health in a separate video to reach out and try and help others going through tough times. I have your channel and you to thank for that as I probably would of never opened up and addressed it with my channel's community if it wasn't for you. My hiking video will be out toward the end of this month if you care to watch it?. It would be awesome if you leave a comment!
    Congratulations on your successful winter summit of Nevis. All the best, Stone Age.

    Another great hike. Thanks Abbie. I love those bits like the rock-ditch crossings. I would've never ever thought about them again but seeing then in your video--zap! I'm right back on that trail.
    At 19:50 that bit of cliff beyond the cornice? In May 2018 when I was there in foggy conditions, a bit like this (but to my right) just looked like it was just the next cairn to walk to. Frightening to think I might've just walked to it...
    What's also odd is that Ben-N in January looks a lot like it did in May, only less snow.
    22:31 that bit of grey is exactly the bit I saw and registered it as 'another cairn.'

    • @RichmountainexperiencesCoUk
      @RichmountainexperiencesCoUk 4 года назад

      I have often seen people walking across the cornice to cut off the corner when visibility is good. Very scary to see... Sometimes cloudy weather reduces this as they have to follow cairns.This video was in early season, and the snow can bury everything, including the cairns, usually just leaving the summit shelter and trig point exposed.

    I remember when I climbed Ben Nevis I got caught in a whiteout on the plateau. Was keeping the cairns to my right but the visibility became so poor that between two cairns I'd ended up veering off course, and when the cairn finally materialised out of the white it was way over to my left. Still don't know how I didn't end up down a gully!

    7.49 I was so nervous doing that bit as I hate going close to sheer cliff sides I actually climbed the rocks right on the left so I was as far away from the edge as I possibly could haah
