Ultimate battle 22 is part of the holy grail of Japanese imports along with DBZ The Legend and Final Bout, we were starving so bad for a DBZ game that we actually thought this game was playable.
I’d forgotten about the legend game. I emulated final bout and that one back in 02 or 03. I couldn’t find a translated version. So I played them on my grandmas computer. Needless to say they ran awful on a compaq presario lol. But 12 year old me was through the roof, I had dbz games none of my friends had ever seen or heard about haha.
when i was young my mom got me a modchipped ps1 with a huge binder full of burned discs and it had this and Final Bout on there. They were bad games but I played the hell out of them still, that was the best bulk game gift i ever got. Also included Thrill Kill which wasn't very fun to play because I didn't know any special moves.
I remember seeing the commercial for this as a kid being excited about it. I thought it was super weird to be advertising a ps1 game in like 03 but I was so dbz crazy I didn’t care. Went to Target to get it actually never got it and instead got Supersonic Warriors for the gba. One of the best decisions I ever made lol.
Handheld games are so much cooler than TV games, especially since (back then) you couldn't share a TV, but you could be as selfish as you wanted with a handheld.
I think the names were after their french names. Cause in old dub we used to call Buu "Boubou" , Gotenks "Gotrunks", androids were called Cyborgs (C16, C17 and so on), Master Roshi was called "Tortue géniale". Well you get the idea
Yep that's the reason for sure, they probably based the translation on the French version for some reason Genious and Likum remain an enigma however (probably just a bad translation from the Japanese pronunciation)

The game looked cool because of the name, the case, and the intro. But when it was time to play it....oh boy was it awful.

I bought this game at an FYE in middle school. Got home, popped the game in and almost immediately regretted it. The only DB game that disappointed me more was DB GT Final Bout.
Excellent review of the game. I have that game and it's THE worst Dragonball fighting game I've ever played. It sucks that they made the signature Ki attacks such as the Kamehameha look like a regular fireball which is pathetic. That game is so bad that Dragonball GT Final Bout puts it to shame in comparison even though Dragonball GT Final Bout is a crap game too overall.
The terrible flight mechanic of this game makes you really appreciate the seamless free-flight gameplay feature of Budokai 3. A simple double dash left and up on the d-pad is all it takes to get airborne then charge your ki or get away from the opponent’s hyper mode.
The fact that they changed kid trunks to little trunks is hilarious it's like the developers thought that players from the u.s wouldn't understand what kid means, and they did my boy Majin buu or should I say Majin boo dirty
I remember playing the hell out of this game as a kid. We couldn't afford a ps2, so this and "final bout" were all we got in my house. I even had the code to turn it into "Ultimate Battle 27"
I loooooved that this game had the anime look with the characters, at a time where 3D looked crap, and the sprites in other games weren't up to par it really was amazing to look at. I guess that's why I played the absolute shit out of it. I still believe a DBZ fighting game with cell animations like this, but made for modern hardware would be amazing.

Yeah, this was absolutely awful and I don't just feel that way due to my main memory of it being annihilated by my eldest brother as he used Mr Satan's lack of Ki to infinitely spam me to death. GT Final Bout was a much better game... which itself was then far surpassed by Budokai. The only 2 good things about this game is his intro and OST. I remember playing it a whole afternoon with my brother just to see the interaction between each character before the fight, despite the fact we didn't understand japanese. Kids are happy with way simpler things than adults 😂
Ultimate battle 22 is such an over hated game. It played great once you got used to the timings and the build up mode increases your speed too, something nobody ever mentions because I doubt any of the reviewers ever played it long enough. Once levelled the game speeds up a lot and things click into place. Why they did it? No clue maybe they thought it was too punishing and made the game slower to compensate. But when all we had was final bout, the worst dbz game ever and yes I'm including sagas, I think this game was worth it's time and appreciated yours.
Sweet childhood memories. When playing it in multiplayer there was a lot of fun to be had making mockery of the all goofy aspects of the game. And the soundtrack is actually catchy
A friend of mine had this game for the ps1, which I never had but always wanted, and i remember being absolutely in love with the disc art and the cover art but I don't really remember watching him play the game, like none of it. To this day, I still haven't got a ps1
It's worth mentioning that since this game was released one year later in certain PAL regions (i.e Portugal, Spain and France) after it's Japanese release, the PAL version of Ultimate Battle 22 runs at 50Hz or 50 FPS, which ran 16,67% slower than it's Japanese counterpart, not that it really mattered given even the Japanese version was slower but not as sluggish as the PAL version. As for the weird translations, it seems that some of the characters' name were translated based upon the French version of the Dubbed Anime, for instance Master Roshi was called Genious Turtle which was used on the French and Portuguese Dub of DBZ.
This is interesting because my friend had this game when I was a kid in the U.S. and the names were more accurat than the version you have from what I remember except for a few exceptions like Gogeta was called Vegito.
I'm from Portugal and over here, the "Androids" were ALWAYS referred to as cyborgs and the "C-[number]" naming style was also used. Also, 17 and 18 are in fact cyborgs, but 16 is actually an android. He's all robotic, unlike 17 and 18 who still have some human parts. But the weirdest part of the Portuguese dub is some of the character names were changed. Some changes made sense, like "Gohan" was changed to "Golan" (makes more sense phonetically in the Portuguese language), and "Chichi" was renamed to "Kika" (because the word "chichi" is literally "weewee" in Portuguese. You know, urine lol). Then it gets really weird. King Piccolo was changed to Satan in the original Dragon Ball. There was no Mr. Satan character (who was renamed Hercules) until the Cell saga after all, so they couldn't have known that, and it kinda made sense, as Kami is literally named God, so he was simply named God. However, when King Piccolo was defeated by Goku, he spit out an egg, from which Piccolo Junior was born, becoming the Piccolo we all know and love. In the PT dub, they renamed him to something that roughly translates to "Satan's Little Heart" which sounds just as stupid as you might think in Portuguese...

I'm from Spain, and here we got the series in the regional catalan TV shortly after, which granted it in a huge popularity. I'm talking here about OG Dragon Ball, and the hype about the series continued well entering the 90s. Also, many of the weird names in this game were commonplace back then.
The only way to level up attacks in Build Up Mode was to kill your opponent with the move wanted to get stronger. When I was done, my base ki blasts were far more deadly than my utterly useless kamehameha, despite my best efforts to upgrade it. I kept messing up the inputs.
Lol this game was so bad even as a kid i was unhappy with it. Found fun out of the garbage playing my brother. But overall i agree with the vid. One thing to point out is gotenks is 4ft2 and frieza is 5ft 2. Theyre only 12 inches apart. He comes to friezas chest. And as someone whos dated someone a foot shorter before thats about right lol. His head is just too big 😂. Great video.
I don't know if it's the European adaptation or only the Italian one but, actually, here we call the androids c-17, c-18, c-19, c-20 (or doctor Gelo) and the supreme Kai is called Kaioshin as well. Maybe the did a little mashup with the various adaptations 😅. (Ps the third saga of dbz is always called android saga but the names of the androids, however, are cyborg and the number...)
I purchased a French version whilst on holiday as a kid (these games never got released in the UK until MUCH later), and it had the androids as C18, C16 etc, same with the supreme kai, so yeah, Goku was also called Sangoku and pretty sure Gotenks was called Gotrunks. Was pretty cool seeing all these characters at a time when here in the UK, we'd only just got to the start of the namek saga.

I had some BANGER games to play on ps1 like: Crash Bandicoot 2, tomb raider 2-3, WWF Smackdown 2, Volume 8 Demo disk (which opened the doors to BIG NAME titles such as: Metal Gear Solid, Spyro the dragon, cool boarders 3, soul reaver, Medievil, Grand Turismo, Shadow Ninja, and a few more that i cant really remember but WWF War Zone doesn'tcount as a banger but...meh 🤷🏾♂️)
Oh no... I repressed this game in my memory. I remember being lent this game from a school friend in 2000 with a swap disc to play the Japanese version. I sadly didn't get the Engrish in the Japanese version but even then I recognised how horrible this game was. It almost put me off dbz entirely
Here in Canada I got this game when i was 10 or 11, right around budokai 2 or so and we have completely different odd changes! For example we have super Saiyan 3 goku instead of mega goku but the one that stood out for me is gogeta is named vegito in game and in the manual haha. I did put hours into this game and played it during lockdowns, goes to show just how compelling dragon ball is to keep me playing this! Even final bout to haha!
I still come back to this review now and then because while I owned ultimate battle 22 for years, the version you played was somehow even worse then I remember and I knew it was bad back then as a kid. I had properly translated names and I don't recall the cpu reading inputs, but I remember this game just being the same amount of crap as mentioned here and with a less funny(but still funny) manual bio pages.
I remember this though: This game was once a sponsor of an episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, a pro-wrestling show...in 2003, and no, I'm not kidding. Though considering the game released in North America that same year...yeah. Gotta get that sponsorship money, even if the game is total garbage...

which version is the Ka Ka Ka Kazi Daze at the begining? anyway, i played this in the early 90 mid 90's originally, had a friend down the street, he had the Japanese version but no mod chip in his playstayion, he had this and Dragon Ball Z Legends i believe. to make the games work he had a button on a spring so it would hold the button down for the disc to spin while the lid is open, had to take a american game and do this weird disc swap like 3 or 4 times all on the playstation screens at specific times and you could trick the playstation into playing japanese games. took a while to master the swapping times. for as bad as this game is, i would rather play this than Final Bout.
Fond memories, was the same for me, had a french version of Ultimate Battle 22 as we never had these games in the UK until years later, and even then, they only ported UB22 and Final Bout. I ended up importing Final Bout and DBZ Legends from japan and had one of those swap discs with the spring, still got it mind you. Was torture as a kid as my small tv for some reason couldn't handle the special attacks in DBZ legends, I had to play it in black and white...eventually got some adapter allowing me to play it in colour but I had to learn which characters super moves would cause the tv picture to roll continuously after, so goku's spirit bomb would cause it, few others etc...shame, DBZ Legends was great, but never got a UK release, no clue why.

You think UB22 is bad? Final Bout is even worse! Quite possibly the worst DB game ever made, even more ugly and sluggish and non-responsive than UB22. They're not quite AS insufferably awful, but still definitely stay away from Legacy of Goku 1 (though IIRC you already reviewd that), Taiketsu, Ultimate Blast (aka Ultimate Tenkaichi), and Battle of Z. All truly AWFUL games 🤮
Ultimate Battle 22 was awfully bad. Even worser than DBGT Final Bout and that was a stinker, imo. It wasn't until Budokai that DB came into it's own. Course, DB has had some hits and misses videogame-wise. At any rate, I sadly bought Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout when both came out. Still have them. Lol, the game store was smart enough not to take them back.

You should play Shin Butoden, it's pretty much a Ultimate Battle 22 but better in every way, it also has a fun betting mode involving Mr. Satan.

Best dbz ost in any game 🎮 and i loce the voice overs, however that game play requires a lot of imagination
I remember this though: This game was once a sponsor of an episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, a pro-wrestling show...in 2003, and no, I'm not kidding. Though considering the game released in North America that same year...yeah. Gotta get that sponsorship money, even if the game is total garbage...

anyway, i played this in the early 90 mid 90's originally, had a friend down the street, he had the Japanese version but no mod chip in his playstayion, he had this and Dragon Ball Z Legends i believe. to make the games work he had a button on a spring so it would hold the button down for the disc to spin while the lid is open, had to take a american game and do this weird disc swap like 3 or 4 times all on the playstation screens at specific times and you could trick the playstation into playing japanese games. took a while to master the swapping times.
for as bad as this game is, i would rather play this than Final Bout.
Fond memories, was the same for me, had a french version of Ultimate Battle 22 as we never had these games in the UK until years later, and even then, they only ported UB22 and Final Bout. I ended up importing Final Bout and DBZ Legends from japan and had one of those swap discs with the spring, still got it mind you. Was torture as a kid as my small tv for some reason couldn't handle the special attacks in DBZ legends, I had to play it in black and white...eventually got some adapter allowing me to play it in colour but I had to learn which characters super moves would cause the tv picture to roll continuously after, so goku's spirit bomb would cause it, few others etc...shame, DBZ Legends was great, but never got a UK release, no clue why.
The only thing this game had was a character selection that I preferred over Budokai 1. Doesn’t mean much when the characters control like crap.

You think UB22 is bad? Final Bout is even worse! Quite possibly the worst DB game ever made, even more ugly and sluggish and non-responsive than UB22.
They're not quite AS insufferably awful, but still definitely stay away from Legacy of Goku 1 (though IIRC you already reviewd that), Taiketsu, Ultimate Blast (aka Ultimate Tenkaichi), and Battle of Z. All truly AWFUL games 🤮

Ultimate Battle 22 was awfully bad. Even worser than DBGT Final Bout and that was a stinker, imo. It wasn't until Budokai that DB came into it's own. Course, DB has had some hits and misses videogame-wise. At any rate, I sadly bought Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout when both came out. Still have them. Lol, the game store was smart enough not to take them back.

My problem with this game is every attack looks the same and they look weak compared to other games.
I loved this game and final bout more than battle of Gods that for me is still the worst
