this part of the movie is just gut wrenching. first he's built up with love and false hope to become real, abandoned, tricked to going back to the place that built him only to have more news reported to him that he was merely a test run.
Professor Hobby was very cruel to David. He speaks of David as an extraordinary, precious machine, and he was aware of David's dangerous journey looking for Blue Fairy, but instead of rescuing him right away, the team decided it was better to "keep the experiment running" even though David could have been destroyed any minute. The last line about "we want to hear about your adventures" is extremely cold; David was programmed to be a little boy who suddenly lost his mommy and his entire world, it's not like he went out camping or something.
I'll defend the creator on this one. Professor Hobby couldn't relate to him as a real person since David is identical to Hobby's son. It would ruin the uniqueness of his son. He was indeed one of a kind as every real person in the world.

I think throughout David’s long journey he becomes more human than we would have imagined in the beginning of the film. The sense of longing is so palpable. They say robots will become sentient like this
One of the disturbing things about this scene, thinking about it from David’s perspective, is that he didn’t know the other David was also a robot. So he definitely had it in him to commit murder out of jealousy.
I beg to differ: David knows he's a mecha and not a "real boy" (therefore his search for Prof. Hobby and later the blue fairy to "make him real"). By extension, he must assume that the other David is also a mecha. But yeah, David seemingly is able to commit atrocities out of human feelings, namely jealousy.

wildmann23 David has love in his heart I know many wont forgive someone who left them behind it tells me despite Monica-leaving David-loves her as a mom and wanted her back in his life this movie sets. Wonderful and beautiful example you love someone and forgiving towards them after they did you wrong.
When I was a little boy, I saw bits and pieces of this movie and remembered this scene very different. I recalled it as more of a fight scene. One where the other David was basically an evil twin, mocking our David and saying how he would never really be loved. Because of that, I had assumed that this was more of an action adventure. The kind where David got his wish and/or woke up, revealing that it was all a Dream. That David was an orphan who felt that he wasn’t accepted by his adoptive family. But I would find out how wrong I was when I tried watching the entire thing at the age of 12. This movie left me scarred for life.
The newer model is more socially nuanced, tells funny jokes, doesn't stare, and isn't as creepy. Pretty sad that old David's been replaced by a better version. It's also the first robot-on-robot murder out of jealousy. It's like Cain and abel and the prodigal son, all in one.
Very true. At the very same time, Monica and Henry were superficial and expected very little of him. When they found out what he was capable of, he became a threat to them.
I think that when they chose David to go with Monica and Henry, they stated in the beginning of the movie that they were carefully hand selected due to their circumstances. I am thinking it was assumed that Martin would never wake up by the company and due to the laws on having children, they were not going to have another kid biologically. Due to this, the circumstances ended up being different as having a brother of sorts who would antagonize and cause mischief for David was not a part of the equation when they made the decision.
I think I recall a scene where there was a family photo with the professor, his wife and David. David lost his life, his wife abandoned him and he recreated him
Difficult to blame Martin though. Imagine discovering after waking from a coma that your parents have essentially decided to replace you. Wouldn’t you be jealous? Also bear in mind Martin was also a child.
I do get it. He wasn't going to harm Monica. Just cut off a piece of hair. And as for Martin, It was a defense mechanism that got out of hand. Under any circumstances? Accidents HAPPEN. There are incidents where Robots can, will and HAVE harmed humans before. And some of those times, they were accidents. Accidents like what David did, spurred on by Martin's stupid actions. David wouldn't have gone to cut Monica's hair and risk become one-eyed if Martin hadn't dared him to.
"Who's David?" *your brain flashes back to **1:44** in the video to answer the question* Next time you ever meet a David- you should remember this scene and laugh a little
Imagine this: there's a mechanism wired in every robot that says "DO NOT HARM HUMAN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE". If David had that wired into him, he would never touch Martin and he would never approach Monica's face with scissors in his hand. Of course, in theory there are certain situations where some accidents would still occur, and harm could be caused unintentionally and indirectly. I guess you can't prevent all accidents, but I think it might be possible to bring their number down.
Even though there were many great child actors. Haley Joel Osment took the cake for acting skills. Culkin was really decent as well, but he never did have the range for Thrillers. Kirsten Dunst and Christina Ricci were also very good. Dakota Fanning is up there too.
I LOVE this film, I have seen many films I didn't like but I LOVE this one! This film is an emotional roller coaster ride. HJO is the perfect actor for this film. I also loved the Lines in the sand episode of house with Braeden Le Masters! This film is awesome the music is out of this world, the acting is spot on and the scenery will blow you away! I like films that can move you, too many times films have a sugary feel good ending, where as this is bitter sweat. I usually route for the villains in films but am left disappointed. I like how that he dies with his mother moments after that forever moment. This film is underrated so much. I would MUCH rather sit down and watch this then friggin Mamamia or bloody Avatar ANY day of the week!
Okay, so the David we follow in the film clearly has something wrong with him. The other David reacts like a normal kid "cool we share a name, wanna read?"
@@marcoparada6652 I really don't think imprinting means losing your shit upon meeting a kid who shares a name with you. The other David seems more like a kid interacting with a stranger.
@@samrobacker346 it wasn't the name it was the fact that he had a double and there could only be one david for monica. So he assumed that he was going to be replaced. Its almost the same type of jealousy but that a kid has when he has a baby brother but its more grotesque. you'd assume that that baby is going to replace you but in reality hes just there for the ride
Jesus fuçking Christ, he almost made me scared because I watched this movie from a really long time ago and I don't remember this scene. Then when he bashed his face in with the item I literally thought the other David was real and it was gonna show blood God.
I agree that Martin is the conniving one and you could hold him partially responsible for both accidents. But an android shouldn't be so easily provoked into harming a human, that is not acceptable, in my opinion.
Yeah,same... and I can understand Martin, too. It felt like his mohter tried to replace him. And everyboby talks about, how they cried etc. And I was like... wtf this mohter should have done?? She missed her REAL son and burned David... maybe hoping for easying the pain. And then Martin came back and David was easily provoked jealous stupid machine anyway and yet mom loved him and didn't let to destroy him. REAL children are abandoned every day and they loves and forgives, too! It is so stupid to think a robot can love more, even this is just a movie. It was good but for me it was a movie about common sense 😃 not heartbreaking or whatever
And he was swayed into doing those things. If people hadn't pushed him, he would not have done those things. He knows that he wasn't allowed and he tried to convince Martin.
Oh yeah, Cybertronics costumers will just love that... "Take your imprinted David out for a walk, meet another costumer with another David and watch them kill each other .." That´s not "love" what they succeeded to give David.. that´s obsession.. good luck by controlling that :) Just a _little bit_ adjustment work left before "David" should be ready for the market I guess.. Don´t got my wrong.. I love this movie, ever did and ever will. Maybe because it shows so clearly that it is impossible to make "artificial love" how should it be? PROGRAMMING love requires to UNDERSTAND love first.. And by asking 100 people for their definition of love, you may get 100 different answers. Which one of this answers to choose to realize such a product line.. I think this is one of the reasons for putting Joe at Davids side.. Both are made as "Loverobots" .. Sorry for bad english, hope my point is understandable.
This is where the film lost it for me, he goes there starts swinging his creator tells him his makers would like to see him next thing he’s just left to it and slings himself off a sky scraper Then half an hour of absolute mess takes place where dream sequences and reality are entwined and confused, a poorly thought out amount of time sees the seas rise, freeze, thaw and fall. 2000 years ? really?... And of course within months of it’s released the world trade centre shots destroyed the films suspension of disbelief
Well he did the actions but, his brother made him believe that her mother would love him more if he cut her hair like that. He also triggered his defense mechanism by cutting his arm.
Kz3andMore Martin wasn’t a good kid a brother like besides Martin wanted mom All to himself there was jealousy there but David tried to care and get along with Martin but Monica had to choose between her real son and David.
My wife left my son when he was just 3.5 years old... He is of 8.5 years now and has step mom too, but still he seeks love of her own mother who has no interest in him
I do think you have a point, and that might have been one of the things Kubrick and Spielberg were trying to make clear - robots do hold the potential to pose a danger once they get as advanced as the ones in this movie would be, so it's something we should keep in the back our minds even as we push technology forward.
This movie gives me goosebumps every time I watch it , extremely well written to the point where you could easily be lost in thinking that this is reality and not science fiction but again I wonder why am I experiencing those ranges of emotions maybe because deep down I highly suspect that one day soon this will become reality , I may or may not live to see it but it is going to happen because we as humans know no limitations, we always strive for new technologies and sometimes we use science to experiment things we have no business experimenting because we like to be defiant a d we better be ready to deal with the consequences of our actions good or bad .

Wonderful and beautiful example you love someone and forgiving towards them after they did you wrong.
I've always wondered how different the story would have been if he had stayed
He would had been analyzed.

How does it feel to abandoned your own child" like* David (🤖) (😢) 2:42
When I was a little boy, I saw bits and pieces of this movie and remembered this scene very different. I recalled it as more of a fight scene. One where the other David was basically an evil twin, mocking our David and saying how he would never really be loved. Because of that, I had assumed that this was more of an action adventure. The kind where David got his wish and/or woke up, revealing that it was all a Dream. That David was an orphan who felt that he wasn’t accepted by his adoptive family. But I would find out how wrong I was when I tried watching the entire thing at the age of 12.
This movie left me scarred for life.
Same, man. Same.
Here's a hidden gem of my childhood. Wow I almost forgot about this movie.
Rest In Peace, William Hurt.
I remembered I cried after watching this movie and I was just 6 years old.
Theory: David is modeled after Hobby’s dead son. See the photo on his desk.
That’s a fact, not a theory.
And I thought the story should have concentrated on (or at least given equal time to) Hobby’s obsession to recreate him.
@@herakleitus You already know enough in the other scene just after when David sees all the other David’s and Darlene.
Well thank you captain obvious
@@DMalltheway A Flat Fact
A very disturbing scene, but i guess they wanted to show us how "human" David had become, to get what "he" (it?) wants, he´s willing to commit murder.
I think he got too human and became unbalanced. The David he meets seems to react like a normal kid.
Victor Hugo R.M. I think also David was traumatized to remember in the flesh fare and Martins friends it got the best of him.
The newer model is more socially nuanced, tells funny jokes, doesn't stare, and isn't as creepy. Pretty sad that old David's been replaced by a better version. It's also the first robot-on-robot murder out of jealousy. It's like Cain and abel and the prodigal son, all in one.
"If he knows how to love then it is logical to assume he knows how to hate."
This part is both creepy and sad at the same time.
Very true. At the very same time, Monica and Henry were superficial and expected very little of him. When they found out what he was capable of, he became a threat to them.
That's because he was becoming more obsessed
I think that when they chose David to go with Monica and Henry, they stated in the beginning of the movie that they were carefully hand selected due to their circumstances.
I am thinking it was assumed that Martin would never wake up by the company and due to the laws on having children, they were not going to have another kid biologically.
Due to this, the circumstances ended up being different as having a brother of sorts who would antagonize and cause mischief for David was not a part of the equation when they made the decision.
Haley Joel Osment from 'The Sixth Sense' meets William Hurt from 'Altered States'. Spielberg is a genius.
He should have called The Professor "Dad"
1:42 my reaction when I meet somebody who has the same name as me
Is it just me or when the doctor carried David to the chair was kind of cute..?
It was 🥺
He was in fact modeled after the doctors own dead son.
Well, this movie-universe needs more movies...
David makes me cry.
RIP William Hurt
David meets David.
One of the top most depressing movies of all time...
Heartbreaking scene truly
RIP William Hurt.
Doctor, what did you think? Was it a game to play with the emotions of this child? Life isnt a game.
I think I recall a scene where there was a family photo with the professor, his wife and David. David lost his life, his wife abandoned him and he recreated him
@@steliosartemiou6627 Yes i know. But hes not his kid. He could adopt another kid.
i’ll never gonna understand why Cybertronics or the Professor don’t look for David in the water or something like that :/
It's still an accident--- and it's kinda Martin's fault!
Martin himself and Martin's friends are responsible for both of those events. Martin is the conniving one.
LockhartLore my point exactly.
Difficult to blame Martin though. Imagine discovering after waking from a coma that your parents have essentially decided to replace you. Wouldn’t you be jealous? Also bear in mind Martin was also a child.
He was like "I See Dead People:
I do get it. He wasn't going to harm Monica. Just cut off a piece of hair. And as for Martin, It was a defense mechanism that got out of hand. Under any circumstances? Accidents HAPPEN. There are incidents where Robots can, will and HAVE harmed humans before. And some of those times, they were accidents. Accidents like what David did, spurred on by Martin's stupid actions. David wouldn't have gone to cut Monica's hair and risk become one-eyed if Martin hadn't dared him to.
It's funny how William Hurt even looks a lot like Haley joel Osmond.
I still have this muvie pretty good
Best movie ever.
"Who's David?" *your brain flashes back to **1:44** in the video to answer the question* Next time you ever meet a David- you should remember this scene and laugh a little
Gigalo Joe’s exit was so subtle
As a robot he was freaked about by what David did
Take a chill pill!!! David
I like the professor better than the situation he was living in with Monica, Henry, and Martin. That was too superficial.
Seen That Many Years Ago Then Back In 2001,I Seen That.
David: I'm the swan queen. It's my turn, my turn, my turn
The "other" David may not be "imprimented" yet and not be "normal" at all like the first David was at the beginning of the movie. We never will know.
@@franklippert4278 so they planned for the android to lose his shit when meeting another child android?
The "other" David clearly wasn't imprinted. His actions were monotonous, like how David was in the beginning.
Gosh, this movie scared the heck out of me as a child. Uh. 😬😵
I bawled my eyes out as a kid when the mom left him in the woods.
Mad respect to Haley.... he's not sold out ever has he

knowing Haley Joel Osment plays David just makes the "She's mine" part think he's talking about Kairi...help. XD
Jesus fuçking Christ, he almost made me scared because I watched this movie from a really long time ago and I don't remember this scene. Then when he bashed his face in with the item I literally thought the other David was real and it was gonna show blood God.
The other David was real. He was just as conscious as any human. There really is no difference other than it was circuits instead of blood and guts.
@@lorettakruusimae9509 Damn talking about lack of empathy…
@@Don_Porfirio lol she would be crying if her boyfriend or husband dumped her for a robot or mannequin 😂😭
And he was swayed into doing those things. If people hadn't pushed him, he would not have done those things. He knows that he wasn't allowed and he tried to convince Martin.
Oh yeah, Cybertronics costumers will just love that...
"Take your imprinted David out for a walk, meet another costumer with another David and watch them kill each other .."
That´s not "love" what they succeeded to give David.. that´s obsession.. good luck by controlling that :)
Just a _little bit_ adjustment work left before "David" should be ready for the market I guess..
I know some children that feel the same way.
What exactly was in store for him next? Deactivation and research??
This is where the film lost it for me, he goes there starts swinging his creator tells him his makers would like to see him next thing he’s just left to it and slings himself off a sky scraper
Then half an hour of absolute mess takes place where dream sequences and reality are entwined and confused, a poorly thought out amount of time sees the seas rise, freeze, thaw and fall. 2000 years ? really?...
And of course within months of it’s released the world trade centre shots destroyed the films suspension of disbelief
Sad movie back when I was kid and still he was lost 😔
This movie is really touched to me
1:06 vs. 1:44 - which do you prefer?
Well he did the actions but, his brother made him believe that her mother would love him more if he cut her hair like that. He also triggered his defense mechanism by cutting his arm.
Kz3andMore Martin wasn’t a good kid a brother like besides Martin wanted mom All to himself there was jealousy there but David tried to care and get along with Martin but Monica had to choose between her real son and David.
When the ai David says lets be friends I thought David said you can never, meaning hes actually human
True. At the same time, I like the professor better than Monica and Henry. He seems more real. Monica was too superficial
My wife left my son when he was just 3.5 years old... He is of 8.5 years now and has step mom too, but still he seeks love of her own mother who has no interest in him
My name is David. And I always love this movie
If that was a human boy and there was blood, David would probably be horrified of what he had done and broke down crying and say he’s a monster
David's horror was the right reaction. The professor and his ego scarred David further.
you don't get it, do you? Robot may not be allowed to ever hurt a human being, under any circumstances, accidental or not...
Everyone is unique, with different faces
But the kid was a prototype of a robot, so... it's a metaphorical view of what makes us "unique".
I do think you have a point, and that might have been one of the things Kubrick and Spielberg were trying to make clear - robots do hold the potential to pose a danger once they get as advanced as the ones in this movie would be, so it's something we should keep in the back our minds even as we push technology forward.
What Did He Wear In That Scene Then,I Like That Vest.
I feel like my head is robotic unlike the rest of my body
I don’t know if it’s possible for a film to jump the shark, but this and the next 5 mins of the film was it if so
This movie gives me goosebumps every time I watch it , extremely well written to the point where you could easily be lost in thinking that this is reality and not science fiction but again I wonder why am I experiencing those ranges of emotions maybe because deep down I highly suspect that one day soon this will become reality , I may or may not live to see it but it is going to happen because we as humans know no limitations, we always strive for new technologies and sometimes we use science to experiment things we have no business experimenting because we like to be defiant a d we better be ready to deal with the consequences of our actions good or bad .
Whats channel 4 Humans William Hurt is in the tv show. I think you would love the show
