  • Saturday was a sad day for New Yorkers and bird lovers across the country after the Central Park Zoo announced the death of Flaco the owl. He became somewhat of a celebrity after escaping from the Central Park Zoo and flying free in the city for more than a year. CBS New York's Kristie Keleshian shows us how Flaco is being remembered.

@@marieboyle6183 and you think that was a great way for him to go instead of returning to the zoo where he would've lived longer and fed? He was a non native species that didn't have the important skills to live outside the zoo. If he didn't die from collision, he would eventually starve or eat poisoned rats.
There's no one to blame but the folks who wanted him to "live wild and free" and prevented his capture. I hope these folks are happy for the outcome they've created. This was a preventable tragedy. His "freedom" was an early death sentence because people put their interests first over the bird's welfare. The people who celebrated his release lacked care and awareness of bird collisions not to mention the anthropomorphizing. He spent his last year exhausted and hungry. People who don't work in conservation or rescue birds in the city have such twisted views of wildlife and think "omg he's free now" which completely misses the reality of the situation.

a sad loss for the country. Flaco was a standard bearer for wild life existing within one of the largest cities in the world. It is an honorable legacy to raise awareness of the danger of glass and reflective materials to killing birds. you need to place visible obstruction, grid/dots/etching etc. 2" wide and 2" tall for both reflection and transparency to prevent birds flying into glass or any reflective surfaces. I had heard a bird strike a window recently and looked it up ...

If people were fearful of the owl getting poisoned from rat poisoning. Shouldn’t we consider the rest of wildlife too? Besides there are other methods of getting rid of rats than to poison them. There's no one to blame but the folks who wanted him to "live wild and free". I hope these folks are happy for the outcome they've created.
This was a preventable tragedy. It is a non native species in an area that it doesn't belong. He was almost captured but a certain group, whom I won't name, intervened and he escaped again. It's extremely disheartening when people put their interests first over an animal's welfare. There are thousands of birds that die from collision in NYC or die from eating poisoned rats. The people who celebrated his release lacked care and awareness of bird collisions not to mention the anthropomorphizing.
There are people who will say, "well, he lived freely and was probably happy". No. He was raised in captivity. He never learned to hunt and doesn't have the survival skills like those in the wild. He would've spent his last year exhausted and hungry. He was left to fend for himself in an environment where he has no learned survival skills. His "freedom" was an early death sentence. People have such twisted views of wildlife and think "omg he's free now" which completely misses the reality of the situation

poor Flaco its sad. The zoo could have capture him but never bother to do it. They are responsible for his death. lt breaks my heart. Flaco is in heaven flying with beautiful white wings. well miss Flaco and build a statue to honor him. 🦉 Flaco spirit well be on the tree.

Monsters are the ones keeping birds in cages - and the monsters call the person that set the owl free a "vandal" - these monsters are the ones that belong in a cage.

But he may have eaten a rat that might have had eat poison that's why he may have hit the window. Owls live up to 20 years in the wild but in captivity 60 years,he was only 14years😢

He died free thanks to the hero that "vandalized" his cage. A year of freedom compared to how many more he could have lived in capitivty, im saddened he has passed but he was FREE! NO WILD ANIMAL SHOULD BE CAGED FOR OUR ENJOYMENT.
