Belly bands were popular in the 1950's to "prevent" umbilical hernias in newborns. It was basically gauze wrapped around the tummy over the belly button.
Don't know if this is original def if belly band but in past a band of fabric was wrapped around a new born's belly covering the umbilical cord. I remember my brother's and sisters having them
