He really touched the entire hockey world. I’d always watch a Buffalo broadcast just to hear him call the games. You didn’t have to be a Sabres fan to love RJ.

Agreed -- those Ray-Domi bouts were must see TV. In fact, the documentary about the Ray-Domi series is also worth watching. Ray used to get the Aud going when he'd shed his jersey and pads. Anyway, RJ is one of the main reasons I'm still a huge Sabres fan even though I only lived in Buffalo for a couple of year back in the 90s

My God, you guys just made my day. As a life long Buffalonian and Sabres fan this is amazing. Sorry, nobody called a game like RJ

5:15 Even if you're not a Sabers fan, you know his voice when he talks.
We lost a legendary staple in the NHL. He will be missed league wide I can promise you that.

Cant watch this without tearing up. Rest in Peace RJ, he's calling the great game in the sky these days. Most iconic play by play announcer I can think of.

To explain the fog at 1:05, that's what happened when hockey playoff games were played on warm May and June days in old arenas that lacked air conditioning. The game would be stopped every so often and all 40 players from both teams would skate laps to dissipate some of the fog.
The Boston Bruins had a similarly legendary announcer named Fred Cusick. He did play-by-play on radio and then TV from 1952 to 1997. I think of him as "the voice of my childhood."

Growing up a hockey player from the Buffalo area, this man was the voice of my childhood. So many of my memories with my mom and dad include this man’s voice coming through our television. One of the greatest commentators of all time. A great commentator but an even better person. Genuinely great human being. All of Buffalo shed a tear when we heard of his passing. Rest in peace Rick

Great video, loved RJ since I got into hockey. The "Legion of Doom" was the nickname for the Philadelphia Flyers top line of Eric Lindros, John LeClair, and Mikael Renberg, back in the mid-to-late 1990s.

Can’t not cry seeing anything RJ related. I’m 37 and get transported back maybe.. 1995? Climbing the stairs in the Aud up in the oranges that were so steep it seemed illegal, clutching onto my dad terrified of tumbling down, finding our seats, seeing him pull out his little portable radio and put on the radio broadcast because we couldn’t not listen to Rick for a game.

  • @Zaximillian
    @Zaximillian 8 месяцев назад +7

Rick transcended his own team with the excitement of the calls he made, with character and professionalism.
There is only one other hockey announcer that did that, and that's Mike Lange.

I've lived in Buffalo my whole life Rick is just the voice of hockey for me. Growing up you'd play street hockey or NHL video games with your friends and you'd be doing your best impression of Rick whenever you could. He had to step back a few years earlier and it just isn't the same without hearing his voice call the games. Beyond a sports announcer he honestly felt like a grandfather figure for the entire city of Buffalo.

10:44 The 'Legion of Doom' were the Philadelphia Flyers' top line of John LeClair, Eric Lindros and Mikael Renberg between 1995 and 1997. One of the top forward lines in the 90's and top 2 all time for the Flyers.

I think it’s important to really understand that radio is what a lot of us listened to for years leading up to the era of being able to watch just about every game on TV. The voice of your team is engraved into the history you hold with the team.

I LOVED this video. Great Announcers add to the fabric and texture of Sport.
In the South we didn't have hockey until I was almost 30, so it's always been 4th or 5th in my ranking of Sports.
I heard this video and I called my son and we made plans to go to a South Carolina Stngrays game.( Our minor league hockey team)
    I've already bought the tickets.
    Thanks guys,
    Rick

Different sport, but you guys probably know who John Madden was, but did you know his catch phrases? All time great Head coach for a short 10 seasons, then the biggest name in NFL color commentary, along with a video game franchise that of course you know! He's interesting!

I don't give 2 hoots about the NHL, but I know that man's voice. From Sportscenter top plays and highlight videos I know that voice. You know you are a legend when someone, like me, who doesn't really care about your sport is recognizable....that means something. Kind of like Dave Niehaus for the Seattle Mariners.
