    Same here with crappy buttons, good alternative 👍
    Now only find a good way to mount them on a case...

      My thought on this is to mount them on PCBs and then use screws and standoffs to attach the button (or more likely a PCB panel of buttons) to an enclosure.

    Yep, I have the same crappy switches in my drawers. But I just ordered a set of 10x Cherry MX Browns from aliexpress and some keycaps that I think I can engrave and then paint in the grooves to make a nice identifier. Thanks for the tip!

    Very good idea dude! This cherry buttons are new to me. Thanks.

      They are in millions of computer keyboards, possibly including yours.

    Nice idea!
    Unfortunately the keyboard switches are pretty bulky, so they probably won't fit in most smaller projects.
    Have you been using them since making this video? What color feels the best to you?

      Sorry I've been gone for so long! I have reasons that I'll hopefully explain in an upcoming video. Basically the IKW project had a bit of an identity crisis...

    I think it would be a lot of work having to cut square holes manually. But having a project case with machine cut holes would be nice. Are you planning on showing us any more info on this idea or is it a dead idea? Lol

    Do these buttons come with pull down resistors and all that, so you don't have to include so much code for them to not float? I hate that I need to write so much software just to get a reliant button press.

    I have more fun when my project look like something I combined from all kind of dumpster finds :) (which is mostly the case lol) And those flimsy tags on those switches do not make a very professional impression on me btw...

    Will the Cherry keyswitches plug directly into project boards?

    • @ItKindaWorks
      @ItKindaWorks  5 лет назад +1

      They have a small nub on the bottom that you'd have to drill a hole to account for but yeah, they should be fairly easy to mount (you can see what I'm talking about here - media.kingston.com/hyperx/content/Cherry%20MX%20Blue%20Switch%20-%20Animated%20GIF_MXBlue%20(1).gif ). My plan for the most part is to use these with custom etched PCBs but if you're using perf board or something like that, then you'll need to make the hole. Admittedly they're not ideal for early prototypes for this reason and the pins arent perfectly compatible with .1in spacing but they're close enough that you can definitely make it work. My view on these is to use them once I've gotten past figuring out the basic circuit and I want to make something more permanent and presentable.

      @@ItKindaWorks the design reveals that quite a fatigue can happen in the contact that flexes... bad idea.

    • @ItKindaWorks
      @ItKindaWorks  5 лет назад +1

      For a production device being manufactured this is probably true and should be avoided but for a few DIY devices and a standoff set every 2-3 switches I think it would be fine. I don't generally mash the buttons on my own projects haha. Do you have a more foolproof mounting idea that is easy for the average DIYer?

    just checked thingiverse and there's a couple printable key caps for mx's. seems like with a bit of work you could even emboss them with your own image/letters/whatever too.

    The trouble is now that China has copied switches and all other components you just don't know the quality I purchased a steel chrome switch with on-off metal label for mains use for my new power supply and after one month it failed so I opened it and yes it was a China copy very bad quality inside but looked like the old fashioned toggle switch that we used to buy that never went wrong so I have stopped buying from China and I think I will give up the hobby as most components are now cheap copies
