Yeah im a proud owner of this model and completely agree with you. The lightning rod seconds hand and green crystal really give what is supposedly an older design, really sophisticated and futuristic vibes. Unlike any other watch out there. Such an underrated sleeper model from Rolex
I’m almost ready to pull the trigger on the Milgauss. I’m a chemist and work on scientific equipment all the time so hard to imagine a watch better suited for me. You said in the video it isn’t suited to wear every day - but that’s exactly what I’m planning to do. I’m curious why you feel this way? I have too many watches tho, so nothing ever really is worn “every day” anyway lol
Not sure it’s a hidden gem. Prices in secondary markets have risen in rumors it will be discontinued. I hope not. You made a brilliant choice. Great watch. I read that Rolex did not patent the technology for the green sapphire because they are sure no one will figure it out, so patent protection is unnecessary. Bad ass!
Discontinuation wouldn't be surprising, but I wouldn't be surprised if they leave it on the collection for another decade... this is Rolex, they'll do things their own way anyway 😆 I read that theory about the patent as well, but couldn't get it confirmed with Rolex. What strikes me as weird about it: why would Rolex want to take that risk? Rolex is a strictly risk-averse company that has spent the last decades controlling nearly every part of the production of their parts. One of the only thing they don't make themselves are the glasses, so generally they don't make any of their glasses. So I think that's the real explanation: they don't hold the patent because they don't make the glass. They will have strict agreements with the glass manufacturer not to share it with anyone else and maybe a first-buy option in case they decide to buy the glass manufacturer as well 😅
Excellent analysis! I think you may be right that a third party developed it and owns the rights. However, let me give you one more theory. Patent protection is time-limited. Eventually, we want inventions to become public, so the exclusive rights gained when registering a patent eventually expire. This is why we have generic drugs, for example… Coca Cola did not register the patent for the formula of the famous soft drink. Instead, they just keep it a carefully kept trade secret. It’s been this way for over a hundred years, limiting disclosure to protect the valuable formula. Maybe Rolex is thinking like Coca Cola. Maybe their vision was inspired while drinking a tasty Coca Cola out of that timeless and beautiful green glass bottle. Wait! Green glass…Coca Cola…Rolex Milgauss. I think we are into something here, FF…
In true CYA style, “I can neither confirm nor deny this statement.” But I have read/heard it from more than one source. And it is plausible. Patents are public info, but I’m too lazy to research.
Enjoyed your review. I have had my Millgaus black dial for 5 years and have a love hate relationship with it. Sometimes I don't wear if for months as think its dull. Then I'll wear if for a few weeks before switching back to my blue dial Omega Seamaster. Is there something wrong with me???
Would be interested in hearing more about your own personal collection like with this Milgauss. For example the Zenith Elite Captain you're wearing in this video seems to be on your wrist in many of your videos...it seems to be a favorite watch for you and one that probably isn't as widely known. Ever thought of doing a video review of it??
Thanks for your kind words Jonathan, absolutely great to hear you're so interested. The Zenith is definitely one of my all-time favourites, definitely the perfect everyday watch. I've been quite busy the last few weeks, but as soon as I the the opportunity I'll make a review of it. Thanks for the great idea! 😃
What is this? Your only supposed to have this if your a engineer or doctor 😁 I like this Rolex, still a remnant left of the wierd/interesting side of Rolex. TBH, it doesnt really fit in and I won't be suprised if they boot it or do a redesign. That green crystal is just so out of this world, I have never seen another watch with a coloured glass (or do you know any other?) If you like this style/spirit of watch you should check out the redesigned Omega Aqua Terra 2021, the one with small seconds. Think you will enjoy it. That movement is so advanced, and the edged steel dial with blue indicies make the engineer with the Aqua Terra fit right in with the ones with a Milgauss!
Absolutely right - it doesn’t really fit in. That’s why I love it so much hahaha 😀 This is definitely the only watch I could imagine getting away with something as weird and useless as a green gless. So yeah either it will go down as brilliant or as Rolex’s nastiest choice ever. Only the future can tell 🤣 The Aqua terra is a great, great watch and pricewise a more intelligent decision… but hey its nice to be unwise every now and then 😂
almost pulled the trigger on it but ultimately decided it was too big and thick and flashy to be an everyday watch. Sure would be nice to have one in my collection though as a safe queen!
Love the Milgauss green crystal/black face.
It’s no where near 18mm thick. It’s about 13.5-13.7mm thick. Such a stunning watch. I’m picking mine up tomorrow from the AD!!! 😎
Probably the coolest watch currently in the Rolex catalog. There is nothing else like it. The matte black dial is classic Rolex.
Absolutely 😁
For me, the face of the watch using all those colors is just perfection. Green crystal, matte black dial, orange markers. etc. Beautiful watch.
Same here! Wearing it atm and YEAH still love it 😄

Love the green crystal.
I have the blue dial version and I love it...
Great purchase. Difficult to explain to people how special this watch feels on the wrist. If you know it, you know it.
Absolutely! It's something you have to experience 😃
Is one of the best Rolex
Zblue is one of my all time grails
Now that's one for men with real guts 😁
you can also use it as brass knuckles because of its size, you never know. A great watch and a great review.
Best Rolex model ever. Love the black GV.

Love this watch. Great video as always
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks so much :)

I really hope they don’t discontinue the Milgauss. It’s one of my fav watches in the line-up.
That’s super interesting about the patent I have not heard that, funny if true

Congrats. Wear it in the best of health.
🤛🤛 Thanks!

no, you are good. its not an everyday watch, its special, and it belongs in every serious watch collection. but you cant wear it everyday.

I actually really like this watch, it's quirky and different :)
Absolutely, thanks for sharing!

What a dream to own one one day
It’s a dream coming true every day 😄
almost pulled the trigger on it but ultimately decided it was too big and thick and flashy to be an everyday watch. Sure would be nice to have one in my collection though as a safe queen!
Totally agree, it's a bit too thick and flashy for every day.
This watch is beautiful, sadly I will never own one.
Of course you will! Just go for it 😄
You will
As a DaDa, I could never spend the money (which I don't have), because the guilt would be unbearable.
I only bought it for you, the viewer - ya, right!
price is 8700 euros now, not 7900.
True, prices gone up recently. Thanks for the heads-up :)
Insanely overpriced but I gotta admit that I enjoy mine as well.
Spot on ;-)
i bought mine when it was £5500 a damn bargain in 2015
Why I bought it? Because of discon rumors
🤣 yeah let’s hope for the best
Haha! I did the same thing… in 2009.
Joke is on me, now it is the oldest reference in the Rolex catalogue.
The Joker watch
😅 Yes indeed!
Great Watch My favorite Rolex. By the way, Epitome is pronounced Eh Pit OH Mee ( english is f*ucked, I know)
Thanks for your kind suggestion - that was a pretty difficult one indeed :-)
It’s thickness is not 18mm. It’s 13mm.
