I feel so seen by you, I won't lie I don't have the best gpa and I struggled a lot in school, ever since I made the switch to psychology I've gotten significantly better grades, I hope I get lucky in getting into a masters and psyd program in clinical psychology eventually!
you got this! so glad you feel seen. i talk a lot about not getting the best grades in the past because sometimes we feel stuck with our grades or gpa for a variety of reasons. and, i know plenty of psychologists who got ok grades and they turned out to be incredible practitioners 🥰
I'm finishing up my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Walden! So fun to see a Walden grad. Love your videos (and your group therapy podcast!)
I'm in a PsyD program right now! It took some trial and error but I am happy that I am where I am :) Oddly enough, my program didn't require the GRE. I really appreciated that they took a holistic approach when looking at candidates and didn't focus on the GRE score.
Hey makeusmileify, thanks for your comment! I'm noticing a lot of programs dont require the GRE either. Sometimes the GRE can feel very stressful for people who aren't the best at standardized testing
Hi! I recently graduated with my masters in CMHC and am having the same experience of wanting to be a psychologist rather than a LPC because psych is truly my passion. Did you have any research experience when applying to these doctoral programs?
I wasn’t the best test taker when it comes to taking exams. I learned from failure a lot and it devastated me. But I learned how to keep my head up because I’m a good person and there’s nothing better than afraid of. If you want something go after it even if you have to take the punches. I wanna start my online coaching business and get my masters later on to be a LPC. Any tips or advice
How long did it take all together. I’m 32 I currently just got accepted into The Chicago School of Profession Psychology Bachelor’s program. My end goal is to become a clinical psychologist Psy.D (I love working with people).
your video was so helpful! i’m hopefully going to get my masters in mental health counseling (waiting to hear back from grad schools), but what made you decide to go for your doctorate rather than just a masters degree?
thanks mercy! and congrats on applying to grad schools. i got a master's first and decided to keep going. one of my goals was psychological testing and evaluation, and i needed a psyd/phd for that. hope that helps!
What apps, websites, have you found most useful in studying for exams and that you recommend for someone just starting a psyD Clinical Psychology program?
Your channel has been so helpful, thank you for sharing! I was wondering if you could share some knowledge on applying for PsyD programs without obtaining your master's degree first? I recently graduated with my bachelor's and applied for PsyD programs that I have managed to get interviews for, but I am tremendously nervous about how realistic it is that I get accepted.
Hey! I'm in a PsyD program right now and was accepted with just my bachelor's. Most programs don't require a master's degree to be admitted into a PsyD program. Although I do have classmates who do have their masters and are returning to get their PsyD, I also have a ton of classmates who came in straight from undergrad. I found that programs look for good matches for their program and not so much if someone has a master's degree. Best of luck with your interviews! You got this!
Wow! Lovely to hear something about this. Thank you for sharing! I'm actually considering to change my interest. I want study PsyD but my undergraduate is Political Science, do you think I'll get accepted? 🙂
@@diondoinittake some psych courses at a community college. Intro to Psych, Abnormal Psych, Biopsych, stats and research methods. Most grad programs will look for those classes. Do check with each school. Good luck.
Which grad school and doctorate school did you apply to? What work did you do after graduate school? I loved your experience with all kinds of patients. Thank you.
Hi Nush! Thanks for your comment! I went to Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ. They also have an Illinois campus. I worked at the VA and in forensics for a short period of time, then in private practice. I am currently in private practice.
Hi Ms. Casey! I will be going into a master's program this coming fall which is a research based psychology program. I was wondering if this route can still lead me to a career path in a sport psychology/clinical psychology as a concentration with a potential psychology based research master's degree?
hey andre! i don’t see why not :) i’d think of potential job descriptions you’d see yourself happy with (search for the titles in indeed, careerbuilder, linkedin, etc), and see what the requirements are. if it’s research based, i’m not sure if licensing is a requirement. you can certainly get licensed at the masters level, but it depends on the job and the organization’s requirements. when in doubt, find your dream job and see what the requirements are within the job description ❤️
Hi Kristen. Did you work as a LPC while pursuing your doctorate degree? Or you completely left your full time job to pursue PsyD? -need some mentoring advice 😄
hi bernice! so i worked under an lpc for a little bit but i couldn't do it full time with the program that i was enrolled in. it was just too much for me, especially because i attended an accelerated program. with clinicals, exams, and having to be in class (physically attending classes) - i just couldn't swing it. i took out loans to pay my living expenses. probably not the best financial decision ever, but that was one of the only options that worked for me. hope this helps!
Thank you for the response! It’s very helpful. The reason I asked is because I’m planning to enroll into MA in clinical psychology (LPCC track), get licensed and continue to PsyD program. were you making good money during your lpc days? Was it worth it pursuing your PsyD although u already had LPC at the time?
hey carissa! it truly depends on a variety of factors. for those who have lower gpa's or have lower gre scores, having a master's shows that you're a good psyd candidate because you've already had grad school experience. i suggest to people to call their prospective schools and inquire about the requirements and ask if a masters would be helpful. i know a ton of people who went straight psyd. i did masters because that's just where life took me at the time. hope this helps!
i got my bachelors in psychology, but i know of a few people who had an undergrad in something different. you may have to take a few psychology courses - check the grad school program requirements 🥳

i’m so glad! 🙂

Where can I listen to the podcast?
Glad to see ppl that have gone to Walden I was considering it as well
I so needed to hear this video you literally described me & my experience with this
i'm so glad it was relatable!
Yes please talk more about private practice experience! Please do a video on that.

Is it possible to keep a full time job while doing this I’m a single income dad of 2
