Sins Of My Father - Tom Waits

God said don't give me your
Tin horn prayers
Don't buy roses off the street down there
Took it all and took the dirt road home
Dreaming of Jenny with the light brown hair
Night is falling like a bloody axe
Lies and rumors and the wind at my back
Hand on the wheel gravel on the road
Will the pawn shop sell me back what I sold
I'm gonna take the sins of my father
I'm gonna take the sins of my mother
I"m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
Birds cry warning from a hidden branch
Carving out a future with a gun and an axe
I'm way beyond the gavel and the laws of man
Still living in the palm of the grace of your hand
The worlds not easy the blind man said
Turns on nothing but money and dread
Dogs been scratching at the door all nite
Long neck birds flying out of the moon light
I'm gonna take the sins of my father
I'm gonna take the sins of my mother
I"m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
Smack dab in the middle of a dirty lie
The star spangled glitter of his one good eye
Everybody knows that the game was rigged
Justice wears suspenders and a powdered wig
Dark town alleys been hiding you
Long bell tolling is your waterloo
Oh baby what can you do
Does the light of god blind you
Or lead the way home for you?
I'm gonna take the sins of my father
I'm gonna take the sins of my mother
I"m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
God all mighty for righteousness sake
Humiliation of our fallen state
Written in the book of tubold Cain
A long black over coat will show no stain
Feel the heat and the burn on your back
The rip and the moan and the stretch of the rack
All my belongings in a flour sack
Will the place I come from
Take me back
I'm gonna take the sins of my father
I'm gonna take the sins of my mother
I"m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
They'll hang me in the morning on a scaffold yea big
To dance upon nothing to the tyborn jig
Treats you like a puppet when your under its spell
Oh the heart is heaven
But the mind is hell
Jesus of Nazareth told Mike of the weeds
I's born at this time for a reason you see
When I'm dead I"ll be dead a long time
But the wines so pleasing and so sublime
I'm gonna take the sins of my father
I'm gonna take the sins of my mother
I"m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
Kissed my sweetheart by the chinaball tree
Everything I done is between God and me
Only he will judge how my time was spent
29 days of sinning and 40 to repent
The horse is steady but the horse is blind
Wicked are the branches on the tree of mankind
The roots grow upwared and the branches grow down
Its much too late to throw the dice again I've found
I'm gonna take the sins of my father
I'm gonna take the sins of my mother
I"m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
I'm gonna wash them [2x]
I'm gonna wash the sins of my Father
I'm gonna wash the sins of my Mother
I'm gonna wash the sins of my Brother
Till the water runs clear [2x] - Видеоклипы
Hope more young people discover Tom waits, this guy is a legend.
Fuckin eh buddy!
He really is
Turn 15 in a month. I consider myself fairly young.
@@jordandinelt76 That is fairly young!
Keep on living! Life's tough, being down or downed only provides the oppertunity to rise again. You can always rise agin.
Fueken A. Man
All of his music is so uniquely wonderful. It really takes you someplace else. Like a melodic adventure into a beautiful nightmare. A slow walk through a dark swamp with a good friend.
Loved your comment , thats what i think music its about, making you feel something, i think hes a genuis because he can easoly do that
Thank you. Yeah, he's one of my favorites for sure. His music can elicit such a range of emotions. As with actors and writers, I feel the ability to perform in such a broad spectrum is what sets an artist apart from the rest.
Beautifully evocative image; great comment.
When listening to this song I imagine a regretful cowboy looking for redemption in the crazy untamed wild west taking the sins of his relatives along with him.
Keep away from swamps. This is the land of wolves. You ain't no wolf. Name the film and i will buyyou a large whisky
This song demands a rocking chair.
And a shotgun!
On one rn
you're never alone with a bottle of bourbon and a tom waits album. the man talks to me on a level unequaled by any other!
Waits is great for listening if you're drinking hard liquor. I love him.
Rakija and Tom. Name a better duo😂
Late at night ... wife is sleeping ... having a last drink and a cigarette ... night can be so wonderful.
i just finished listening to everything tom waits has ever done. i'm ready to die any time now.
@harrisongsrule did you die bro?
Every line is pure poetry. "When I'm dead, I'll be dead a long time"
+Paul Taylor maybe
Eternity was very long. Especially from the end
@@dirtydanswingecolededanse4147 it took forever and shit for me to be born...
Two kinds of Waits fans: those who think this song is too long and that it damages Real Gone, and those who think it's a masterpiece and a big reason why Real Gone is his best of the 2000s. I'm in the second group. When I start listening to it, I can never stop until it's over. The best of its words are as good as anything he's ever written.
it's interesting you mention this because I just now, after having listened to this song, and Real Gone, since it came out, noticed it was nearly ten minutes long (9:46). I never felt its length. i never felt its time passing. Honestly, i wouldn't have minded if it kept going. I wouldn't have noticed, because every verse is ... so sublime.
some of his best lyrics ever and that's saying something when you're talking about Waits@@Mrcatlistening
I love long songs like this. Ballad type songs that seem to take their time, taking you on a ride. Absolutely no complaints here.
I think those in the first group mentioned arent true fans
Two kinds of Waits fans: those whose favorite song is Hold On, and those that think if Hold On is your favorite Tom Waits song, yer not a real fan.
tom and captain beeheart have always been my main go to for more than I care to remember
This is music that you actually listen to. Stop and think about music nowadays. It's everywhere, and yet no where. From what's piped into grocery stores and laundromats, to what's drowning out the roar of the subway on your Ipod, what of it do you actually hear? This sucks you in and forces you to listen....just...really, really listen. This is real. This is what music should be, always. Thank you, Tom Waits.
You definitely don't hear tom waits on mainstream outlets, he is a rough cut diamond.
Couldnt have put it any better. Sadly enough the mainstream music only got worse the past 8 years. Wonder if it will change ever again
elvis is king my arse. Tom is the king of everything.....long life to you brother
I love this song, it gives you time to finish that strong drink.
Oh the heart is heaven but the mind is hell
That's a beautiful way of putting it man
I really pity people who can not feel this fabulous song in the depths of their soul
This man is one of a kind, one of the most important musicians of all time.❤❤❤
when i'll be dead i'll be dead a long time,
but the wine's so pleasant and so sublime
This song is particularly touching to me because he appears to have sampled my doorbell somewhere in the background, which is absolutely terrifying.
Waits is the expression of many people he looked up to. The words of Bukowski, the clunk of Harry Partch, the swag of Hoagy Carmicheal, the delivery of Ken Nordine and the flow of free Jazz and Kerouac. This man is proof that following your own path pays ten fold.
I've been listening to a wide variety of music spannign many genres for most of my life now, but Tom Waits still occupies a unique and central place in my musical universe. I always come back to his music, and when I listen to a song of his, I rarely can stop at one.
you said it, bouffi
are you finnish?
@@albertfoutraque7514 Yup.
It's truly a sign of a rare musician who can write a song like "Take Me Home", that leaves you with a tear in your eye in little more than a minute, and then go on to write something nearly ten minutes long that STILL makes you wish it was longer.
What I love most about Waits is that when he comes out with new music, you never know what you'll get, only that you'll want more.
He's a very extraordinary man....exorcising thorns from the flesh of men....
"exorcising thorns from the flesh of men" i like that
i just started listening to him and i love his voice, and now i even take naps listening to him.
You truly appreciate him, then. Music is always an usher to dreams...
This is what feelings sound like! 🎩
Dylan and Waits are both looking at the same world. And both tell us what they see and feel. You can't really compare them because they are both unique. I'm just glad that they are still out there telling us what they think about our world.
I got what you are saying here....an apple is an apple and an orange is an orange but they're both still fruit even though you can't compare the two......; )
My dad certainly understands. I grew up listening to Tom Waits and Bob Dylan since I was born. My first concert at age 7 was Bob Dylan at the Colorado State fair. Then had the blessed luxury of seeing Tom Waits on his Mule Variations tour. Pure Gold.
Dylan was so reliant on refashioning covers of stuff most people hadn't heard. I don't think he holds a candle to Wait's in original creative lyrical from the soul parameters.
Dylan is a freak but Tom is a MONSTER ...
one of the greats of our time. a very important artist.
Fancy seeing you here brother
Every single Tom Waits song makes me want to direct a feature film based on it.
This is how it would have sound like if Charles Bukowski had been a musician
Waits was clearly inspired by Bukowski's works. He even was in a documentary about Hank.
I kid you not, I was thinking precisely this when I started reading the sentence (that very moment, the realization hit me when I was midway through).
It's the same Oversoul

I can smell christ impaled up on calvary, one filthy animal

never start kiddies..nasty habit. .
37 times I quit..
🔥🎩🪄🎓👓🪨but at least I can still fuckn count.
Just close the window
I can not believe we do not have music like that these days anymore, the man is a poet, ono who can shape feelings with words and draw tears even from those who believes there is none to shed. Maybe because he knows what pain is? I do not know, but the weight of his words carry the truth of what we carry in the soul.
Great observation! Very good
Saw that Tom Waits 10 years ago, THE concert of my life!!!! That guy is somebody...special! Great artist.
I think I just discovered the music I will listen to for the rest of my life. Just awesome. I can't believe I hadn't bothered to look him up until now. This guy is a lyrical powerhouse. I'm blown away.
Can’t believe nobody is talking about that guitar solo…. One of the best I’ve ever heard…
There are more awsome lyrics packed into this song than there are in the entire collections of most of the artists in the past fifty years
Another masterpiece about a damned man by the master. You really get the sense of a man on a bad horse in a dry purgatory. He'll be dead soon, or maybe he's dead already. Tom Waits can write across the gap between breathing and going stiff. He can write any fucking thing he wants to write. His lyrics sit like poetry on the page better than most anyone's. And I love that bone machine sound. I've got a feeling that pond's gonna get dragged.
Don Bagley he's truly amazing
Sir, you are yourself a writer.
Sounds very familiar to some history of not so long ago.
Its about George Bush Jr winning the election
The horse is steady but the horse is blind
Wicked are the branches on the tree of mankind.....................genious
Bruno Aziz one hell of a poet he is
Real Gone has become one of my top 5 Waits albums. I love gritty the music sounds.
Una delle canzoni più belle del nostro TOMMASO..
Damn, this song is so dirty... I love it!
Thank YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothin' like Tom Waits and Whiskey...
Woke with this song in my head and couldn't find my cd. Thank you! "Jesus of Nazareth told Mike of the Weeds "I was born at this time for a reason you see? When I'm dead I'll be dead a long time . . ."
One of the great concerts I got to see a couple of decades ago was Tom Waits and Laura Nyro on the same stage. Was amazing!
I wrote a long comment then just realised words will never cover his words in this song...
My god what a fucking artist he is...
Brilliant album. Soul food.
Tom Waits is beyond anything I've ever heard/read lyrically. This song is poetic among so many other of his songs, but the way he delivered "everything I done is between God and me. Only he will judge how my time was spent" is chilling. Whether you believe in god or not, you can relate to it being stand up guy and man enough to accept your decisions, whether god is real or not, you're willing to accept and answer to him when the time comes.

Ça me déchire!!
that's right!you express it .... beautifully
Holy hell, is this song good. I got into Tom Waits really recently, and... now i see what i've been missing. Awesome!
This is really GREAT song
Ladies and gentlemen: A true artist! Before I die I´m going to see this man live.
So have you seen him?
Tom Waits, how do I explain him. All of his albums are views of people who aren't as good off as us. He wouldn't have to even add lyrics and we would still realize what he was talking about. Amazing.
I think it's a reference to George Bush in light of his father's, in my opinion justified, invasion of Kuwait/Iraq to expel Iraq from Kuwait.
DEAR BROTHER TOM THANK YOU YOUR WIL HAVE PLASEND DREAMS I WIL HAVE BECAUSE I FOUND YOU THANK YOU FOR YOR MUSIC WOUTER JOANNES
Tom Waits is a genius.
I think this is my Fav Waits song ever!!!! Today!, right now!!!!
i think that music is what makes him amazing ,adding lyrics make it perfect...
Where the hell have you all been PPE used to laugh when I listen to Tom waits back in school now they tell me how good he is
This is so insanely good
I take my Waits neat.
He is like fine whiskey.
Yeah I bought a couple of his albums a couple of days ago, love them.
I can only say that I love this
AWESOME
My favorite lyrics from Tommy...
"A tree born crooked will never grow straight." From this album a song called " How's it gonna end."
I was listening to this while lying on my back just relaxing, it ended, and I was shocked to see that it was about ten minutes long.
Tom waits is inspirational Singer 🤠🤠😎
A masterpiece.
It’s just too good.
Every one of Tom Waits´ songs are like a musical exclamation point
"Herbert using this medium from now on" great Lyrics from a great Guy
Great stuff.
Holy cow. This guy's a genious.
Im 28 and been listening to this moms work since i was 16
You'll get there keep going young man!!!! He's already made you a more wise man than your peers have you not noticed???? Practice doesn't make perfect,,,, perfect practice makes perfect. In the end you'll owe your life to this old boy and your choice has vanished... You now have to lay down your life fighting all established systems. They've already stolen our real musicians who are today's prophets. I hearby rename you the rock n roll kid. To whom much is given much is required young CAPT. You can't fail it's the only good fight left there is
"Everybody knows that the game was rigged. Justice wears suspenders and a powdered wig." Sirens at the station go off. It came together perfectly.
Marvelous track from an underrated album.
amen Tom
You've got one great musical adventure ahead of you - Waits has nearly 20 albums worth of music out, and that's not counting some of the colaborations. Oh the joy of discovery! :)
I envy anyone just now discovering this mad genius now. After over a decade of listening I still discover things. Too dark for God, too strange for the Devil.
so true
Real Gone when it first came out the Album I think I was nr two in our town to buy it :))) Just excellent Album...
You have to watch “The Ballad of Buster Scrugs” he is just what you would expect!
εξαιρετικο!!!

Good driving music :)
wonderful approach of Sins !!
he still takes the the subway to all his gigs in ny.'seen it all through the yellow windows of the evening train'-classic
masterpiece!
I got this album from my brother for christmas.. It is truly a masterpiece.. I like the allover sound of the album.. Nice sound.. You wouldnt think it was from 2004 when you listen to it.. Les Claypool and Brain from primus play on a few of the songs and thats pretty cool too..
You know a song is good when 10 minutes go by in what feels like five.
SWEET!
best best best best one more time best best best best artist
The longest song I've ever listened to that makes me wish it was another 10 or 15 minutes longer.
/lovely ❤️❤️❤️⭐️💋
The lyrics is what makes him amazing.
And his variety of musical landscapes, which often seem so perfect for the content of the lyrics. Here it's the vibrating guitar that echoes the idea of carrying another's mistakes into the future.
gravel soaked in whiskey..... absolute perfection
thefantastic mark howard on the faders!
