  • Alan Ayckbourn is best known as playwright and director but for 37 years of his life, he was the Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough.
The playwright's Archivist, Simon Murgatroyd, narrates this guide through this career from 1972 when he took on the role at the then Library Theatre through to his retirement in 2009 from the company's present home, the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
It explores why he took on the role, how it affected profoundly affected both his career and the theatre itself as well as asking what he brought to the company and how, ultimately, it not only ensured the SJT's survival but preserved the legacy of its founder and his most significant mentor, Stephen Joseph.
Written, researched, edited and narrated by Simon Murgatroyd.
