  • In this video, I do some night time rockhounding with a UV flashlight for a very cool fluorescent mineral called calcite, a polymorph of calcium carbonate. This mineral's fluorescence makes it easier to find at night than in the day.

    Cool video, thanks for the lesson. What part of the country are you in and any tips on locations that might house calcite, like formations and geology? Im in far northern Cali, just past Mount Shasta and once in a while I will find some calcite on rocks or as its own, but mostly as a chunk. Rarely with some tiny cubes forming like fluorite does. I notice your in a watery area, is that normal or just the location your in. I know calcite forms in wet caves and in the sea like coral and shells and so on; but I never saw anything like that around creeks, rivers, lakes and such. Do you know of any areas by me or close in Oregon for cool finds of calcite? Thanks for your time, Chris.

    What UV flashlight do you use? I got UV Scheelite and bought a Craftsman UV Flashlight and it didn't glow. I saw the official photos from the seller and they indeed glow but maybe I have the wrong flashlight?

    • @PaleoCris
      @PaleoCris  4 года назад

      You have to ask the seller what wavelength UV light is being used. In this video, I used a 395nm light, which appears purple to the naked eye. For most minerals, a 365nm UV light works way better. Your craftsman UV light is probably a 395nm.

      +btrim1974 I plan on testing out muriatic acid on some rough specimens since it will damage the calcite...but I hear that it can help with cleaning the matrix off if you use it carefully.
