Patti and Michael did not even meet prior to recording the song! They first met on The Johnny Carson Show while the song was charting. I remember that well in 1986.
CLASSIC 80s DUET‼️🔥🔥The back and forth dialogue is🔥. That "now we're up talking divorce and we weren't even married" hits like a brick. This song is still 🔥. The 80s music had much more of a variety of genres, styles and ages that charted together.
I remember hearing this driving back and forth to College, Can't believe it's been 37 years ago as of 2023! Damn. Oh yeah and it always makes me "tear up" too. laugh...
I forgot what a great song this is. Kinda crazy how it stayed at #1 on the Hot 100 for 3 weeks, considering it was a breakup adult contemporary ballad from two middle-aged veterans in the business. That's not a knock on them, but just how ageist the music business can be, and they still got to #1. Always love Patti's voice.
@@EmpressReacts Ouch , that hurts. You're right back then an old veteran could always come back and teach the younger generation that they better bring it. I have to give this Elevens across the board, its just so sublime.
Wow, I’m telling my age , but this song almost brings a tear, to be young and in my 20’s when this was out, very special time to be young in the 80’s, and we’re so spoiled with all that great music . We didn’t know how good we had it, when two absolute legends like Patti LaBelle and Micheal McDonald get together for a duet like this! This was all over the radio everyday day and night. I remember this being a staple on Quiet Storm radio after 12 midnight ( K97 FM Memphis ) . in the video , Patti is in New York and Micheal is in LA..
Love the reaction Empress :) Such a fantastic track. It doesn't really get much better than this. Legendary music artists and vocalists at the top of thier game. Love this. Could listen to Patti and Michael all day!

They both have such distinctive voices. Patti and Tina Turner both put that stank on their voices. haha Empress you GOTTA check out Reba singing this live. It's called Reba , Linda Davis, Martina & Trisha - On My Own (LIVE '95). It's epic.
FUN FACT: This song was almost not made. Patti said it started out as a solo, and the producer wanted her to sing it a certain way, with more annunciation, and she wasn't feeling it. She kept telling him " I don't sing like that." The song writer, Burt Bacharach, called and asked her if she'd do it as a duet and with whom would she like to sing it with. She said yes, with Michael McDonald but with a different producer.
Great reaction! It inspired me to check out their duet of this on The Tonight Show in 1986. The sound quality’s not great, but I thought their live vocal’s were even better than this.
Just by your reaction filled with joy that only a child can have when they found something new is awesome. having said that I Suggest Dionne Warwick I’ll never love this Way again. if have not seen it already.
***PATTI LaBELLE & MICHAEL McDONALD TRIVIA TIME!!*** ..It's so sad, to be On your OWN... Not only the artists but there were amazing producers back in the day too.
Two powerhouse vocalists.
💯
Two phenomenonal voices. Nothing and nobody comes close with today's artists. Possibly because no one is writing songs of this quality anymore
🤣🤣🤣
No, it's because there is no longer raw talent. It's auto tuned. Noone plays an instrument. The word music has been eliminated.
