    Your videos are awesome, not only because of the cars, but because of your personality. You could sell me a Yugo for 10X the price and I would buy it!!! 🤣😏😎
    Fun Fact: The W124 is noted as having a chassis at 66 MHz, which means it has the stiffest body of any automobile ever manufactured. I am not sure if it has been bested yet. My Mom had an 1991 E300 and that car was as solid as bank vault, handle spectacularly and was fast. It was lightyears ahead of cars being built at that time, including BMW and would surely hold its own even today! Thanks for this review!

    This car is every bit as good as Bill claims it is. Like six months ago I was looking to buy the type of car that I grew up with in the 80s and 90s in Germany and came across a a low-mileage '95 E320. I remembered how my grandmother's 190E drove: a very heavy car with a massive steering wheel. No luxurious trim to speak of but the luxury was in how it felt and how nothing ever rattled or felt cheap. That W124 has all these qualities, but the E320 comes with that gorgeous inline-6 which is probably one of the last of its kind. I live in NYC and I yet have to hear that engine when driving in the city. It gets drowned out entirely by the city noises. Actually, mine doesn't at all sound like the engine in this review. When accelerating hard, mine sounds like a very soft turbine that quickly spools up.
    An underrated quality of a late W124 is how good it feels on curvy narrow back roads: Thanks to the smaller steering wheel of the later models, it has very direct (and heavy in my car) steering that gives off the impression of being nimble and tossable and yet, at the same time, the suspension is so soft that every corner feels precarious. There's massive body roll. The car is very serene and cultured on a highway but it can be equally engaging and exciting on the windy roads. It's a very trustworthy car and that's despite a number of things not working in mine such as the electric antenna, the radio and sporadically the cruise control. A couple of months after I got mine the light switch was clearly on its last leg where only two and a half of the five positions could still be engaged. I replaced it with a new original Mercedes part and now it's back to exactly how I remembered the same piece on my grandmother's 190: a heavy-turning rotary switch that satisfyingly snapped into each position.
    Despite this car being a sizable executive saloon in the days, nowadays it's a surprisingly small car. It's between two and three inches shorter than a modern Camry and quite a bit narrower. It's also very maneuverable in tight spaces which isn't something you would expect. Thanks to the rear wheel drive, it has a very small turning circle, too.

    • @danpan001
      @danpan001 5 лет назад

      really? I am thinking about buying a 87 300E. Just worried about if there are still parts if something goes wrong or how expensive to maintain. It seems most people who drive classic MB prefer diesel and I don't understand why. I tried one before it soooo slow to pick up speed. Interesting enough I am also thinking if I should get LS 430 but Scotty Kilmer the mechanic online says it is better to get 6 cylinder Lexus like ES instead.

    • @yogib37
      @yogib37 5 лет назад +3

      @@danpan001 which MB did you try as a diesel? I have 2 W124 diesels they are fast at pick up. As for parts they are plently around and can get them. I would avoid the dealer cause they of course would jack up the price. Some online parts places you can get is FCPEURO, Autohausaz eeuro some sell genuine MB parts but they are cheaper then the dealer. some parts are No longer available but most you can still get. It is not that hard to work on it yourself if you have the skill set to do it. Scotty Kilmer is a jack wagon. Scotty is anti Mercedes and pro Toyota's and Lexus. if you want to know good MB Videos try Mercedessourse, Pierre Hedary and some other good Mercedes you tube channels.

    • @danpan001
      @danpan001 5 лет назад

      Thanks Christopher Baker for your reply. I don't remember (or at that time I had no ideas on even what W124 is like you said I watched Mercedessourse, Pierre Hedary and another one who mainly works on newer MB car called ligitstreetcars) what model I tried. I think it is 1988 model. I am not sure Scotty is totally anti MB. He just believes that MB made after mid 1990s are of bad quality. And from what I read many MB owners share his position. That after 1995 the accountants not engineers are in charge of MB. And that is the assumption I use so I look for MB before 1995(of course I read that 92-96 models used biodegradable wire harness) or maybe before 1999 for W140. Like the gentleman said in the video I want to find a car that I can work on. Maybe a car that use carburetor instead of fuel injection? But I also read W123 is the last car that it is feasible to work on in home garage(I don't have many tools but I have a friend who is retired mechanic he is into restoring American classics). One answer I didn't understand was when I comment at Pierre Hedary channel that Scotty said (Scotty actually visited him in Florida) that diesel cars polluting because the particles and Pierre Hedary said something like that is true only for modern MB diesel not the classic one. How can that be? Isn't the older the diesel models the more pollution it produces? Of course someone who fix up MB to sell told me that early 2000s like W210 is good quality too just not something after 2005. But I also read that the worse quality is 2000-2006 and after 2006 MB went back to build quality cars but just too many electronics that can go wrong and they become money pits after warranty period. I am considering either a 1987 300E or 1999 S320 (so no problem with wire harness but maybe too modern for me to work on without sophisticated code reader etc.). Of course I can just follow Scotty and get a Lexus and not to worry about anything.

    • @LilRick96
      @LilRick96 5 лет назад

      @@danpan001 Yeah my dad got the 300e for $800 and it needed some parts to make sure it just it would run fine and man it did. A really really quick and smooth car 💯. It drove better than our 90 560sel, our 2010 E550 and my Lexus LS, I couldn't believe it. And that's bull shit about what Scotty said. If you do your research on the LS430 and know what needs to be maintained, then you won't need to be worried. Bought my 06 Ultra Luxury back in December with 74k miles on the dash and now I'm at 90k now ( which is time for the big timing belt, water pump etc maintenance). You can get an ES or GS which are still great cars but you ain't beating an LS430, arguably the greatest Lexus ever built apart from the LFA. Literally for me it's just oil changes with my Lexus and she runs flawlessly.

      @@danpan001Pierre Hedary works on classic mercedes and he is into saving them. He is kind of snobby about it but he is full of valuable information. That is true what Scotty says after the mid 90's they went to crap. He is not respect much in the you tube community not just Pierre. South Main Auto Eric O has a problem with him. I also like that legitstreetcar channel and he is a mercedes benz tech or was. 1995 was the last year of the w124's then the w210's and w211's. both of my Mercedes is 1987's both diesel they have the OM603 engine 6 cyl. what is good about that car it is all mechanical not dependent on Electronics . the later Mercedes benz like the 2000's and newer it is all computer control. Some of the newer ones you have to put a S/N in for the batter on the computer system. It is too much problems and too much that can go wrong. that is your money pit. I had a 1998 E300 great car mechanical but it had some crazy ass gremlins that had a mind of their own for the electronics so I would if not too much money look at the '87 but it is your choice the Lexus has it computer problems also cause that is the nature of the computers in the car. but Get the '87 inspecpted by a independent shop or a good mercedes shop.

    This guy is a real ball buster:) One thing about these Merc's, you will pay in repairs the value of the car every couple of years if it is your daily. Even if you do them yourself, parts are not cheap and it can be a real pain to isolate the problems. And believe me, there will be problems. I LOVE the feel and looks but it is at a cost. The engine train, yes bulletproof, but rust and electronics are terrible to remedy.

    They could've continued building the W124 for many years to come; a beautiful, well-engineered car from an era where MB built the same model for 10-11 years, not changing every year or two as they do today!

    I really wanna have a drive in one at some point... My dad had a 75hp diesel one when I was a little child... I'm still absolutely sold on this car! You can't get decent ones for cheap anymore in Europe though... There are not many cars I would swap my 97 BMW E36 for but this might be one of them... Definitely has a place in my dream car collection... Rust can be a real issue though...

    Sure if you own one of these you know what he's talking about. I had a 260e that I reconditioned. Anyone into older cars or MB should drive one of these one day. You only know how nice these cars are if you drive one that is mostly in excellent mechanical condition. The car feels like a tank, and handles well. MB Text seat fabric in pre 1990 models were extremely comfortable. (mine was a manual seat not power adjustable. It's perforated material.)

    I think the W124 was just at the sweet spot of computers when it was designed and built. Good enough to design very precise well built cars, but not advanced enough for the car to be loaded with tech that will be obsolete with the next iPhone release.

    Bill, here you really prove that you are a car salesman. I had to look twice to be sure what car you were talking so highly about.
    My 2nd job in the 1990's was being a taxi driver, why I literally lived in these cars in the 1990's. My private car was a 1973 Cadillac Coupe dé Ville.
    If you drive these cars with 3 passengers and luggage in high side winds on the hwy, you need a firm grip on the steering wheel to control it.
    Both my 1973 and later also my 1978 Cadillac Fleetwood I could steer with two fingers under the same condition.
    In Europe you would often see owner having the front suspension lowered, to get the car better under control under high speed.
    In Winter we always drove with garden tiles in the trunk to get a better grip in the snow with the rear wheels. That was never an issue with the Cadillacs.
    The automatic transmission was lazy on hilly roads, why you had to shift down manually, to avoid climbing the hills in a too high gear.
    I called them semi automatic. It got better with the W210 in the late 1990's.
    Seats were hard and you didn't have an even sitting position with the arm rest in the center and the one on the door, like you do in any US cars I have had.
    The steeering wheel was large and you could neither tilt nor telescope it.
    Taxis were driven 190K miles before they were sold. At that point the suspension of the divers seat typically had collapsed and the upholstery was torn.
    When my 1978 Cadillac Fleetwood passed 190K miles, you could hardly see wear in the drivers seat.

    I use to own a 1995 W124. Same color and everything. Totally crapped out on me before it hit 100k miles. Radiator
    exploded, belts breaking, transmission went out at about 98k. Super expensive to have it all fixed. As a former owner, I can say it's far from the best sedan ever made.
    Bought a Kia Soul in 2010, still driving it, and have had to do minimal maintenance. Pretty much just preventative stuff has kept it going. Did the same for my E320 and the guy I sold it to (a mechanic friend) had to scrap it at about 110k miles.
