  • Robert Bateman, one of the world’s most celebrated wildlife artists. The Robert Bateman Centre at Royal Roads University is dedicated to advancing his passionate commitment to education and the environment.
One of the world’s most celebrated wildlife artists, Robert Bateman was born in Toronto in 1930 and spent much of his youth observing and admiring the wildlife of the Toronto ravines. He was inspired by the Group of Seven to create abstract paintings of nature, but he did not immediately pursue art as a career. Instead, he took a degree in geography at the University of Toronto in 1954, and later studied at the Ontario College of Education. He traveled around the world in a Land Rover in 1957-58, increasing his appreciation of cultural and natural heritage. He married Suzanne Bowerman in 1961, and the couple had three children.

Wonderful interview. I have always admired your art, and now I admire and understand your whole philosophy. It is very similar to mine, however, I am an older individual. Maybe that's why.

I was riding an indoor bike, kind of a spin-bike at a local gym. Sometimes its hard to ride when there is a foot of snow and lots of ice and its 10 degrees. Anyway, a gal about 40 was on a bike next to me riding, I asked her does she ride a road or mountain bike outside? She said, " I dont own a bike, why would I? I only exercise inside, its not safe to exercise outside. This is in Idaho, relatively safe, I found out she had lived her whole life in Chicago. Plus her whole goal in exercise is to compare herself to others online, yikes.

As an American, I can say that we don’t want taxes cut because we want to buy more, we want less government controlling our lives and don’t want to be slaves to our jobs. Money in our pocket means more freedom to do things like enjoy nature. It’s easy to criticize us from an outside perspective but, respectfully, I don’t think Bateman understands our American beliefs.
