Ornette used no chordal instruments because he wanted to be free of chord progressions. He believed that a jazz musician should be able to choose any direction without the prison of chord progressions. A great innovator, who was way ahead of his time.
He continues to sound great. Is there a more consistent musician in all of jazz? He's been doing this better than anybody else for over 50 years. A real hero. Bravo.
Charlie and Don were so generous with there time and creativity. I studied with both. The Creative Music Studio founded by Ornette. Artistic directors Karl Berger and Ingrid Sertso. Thanx
There’s so much emotion in this performance. Beautiful expressions of texture and melody all around. Swing, Blues, classical, jazz and avant-garde all wrapped in abstract harmonic cloth.
Ornette was way ahead of his time.Even now, there are individuals who have not accepted his innovations. This happens to all innovators. It happened to Parker, Miles Davis ,Dizzy Gillespie. In time, they were accepted
The first tune is "Turnaround", and not "Dancing in your head". the original recording of "Turnaround" can be found in the album "Tomorrow is the question"
Was that ole man real Ornette Coleman in 2010...? Wow ! Amazing.....!! Is he still alive...now in 2022..? I knew Nordic countries did adore jazz but didn't know they were connected w/Ornette in one way or another....!! John Coltrane already passed away, didn't he....?
Oh wondering where Bachir Attar and his Master musicians of Jajouka are as we played here invited by Ornette,The Master Musicians of Jajouka Bachir Attar
He wasn't the figure that the other two were as to his instrument. Coltrane got it: he called Ornette a great leader rather than a great player. Parallel to that is Schoenberg calling Cage an inventor rather than a composer.
Not good fellowship on the stage. Haden forgets the 'turnaround' melody on its turnaround, Ornette 'teaches' it to him, then quotes 'If I loved you'. Denardo C sounds lost in space. This can happen in tonal, 'inside' music also, but the players there can coast, on attractive meter and chord changes to get thru. Not here.
"I didn't need to worry about keys, chords, melody if I had that emotion that brought tears and laughter to people's hearts."
- Ornette Coleman
Ornette encompassed everything in his playing, free, straight, swing, blues. No division for him. Like a bird, the air is all the same for flying

I have finally got around to appreciating Ornette Coleman. When I first heard him I could not understand his concepts

Ornette's playing in his later years was much calmer and smoother, telling us how it is

Marcello Menta I was going to make the same comment. Thanks.

He played from his heart.
So true

Best trio.....
I believe the drummer is Denardo Coleman, not Jack DeJohnette.
correct
correct
I had the impression at first that he was J DeJohnette, so I scrolled down a bit :P Thanks!!
Thank you!
Flava !
And what's called "Turnaround" is not. But what is it?
What is called "Turnaround Here" really is "Call To Duty"
The master..
the first tune here is turnaround
Charlie Haden suffered from hyperacusia, hence the acoustic barrier between him and the Drummer Denardo Coleman.
Genial
This offering is blues based.
Quartet, because the sax is doubled by echo?
good joke !
It isn't a joke. How many musicians do you see?
@@herukait 24 but i am at the opéra.
What is the name of the bassist and drummer?
+Camila Nascimento de Castro Charlie Haden Bass, Jack de Johnette Drums Charlie Harden died aprox 2 years ago jg
+John Greenan it's Denardo Coleman on Drums
true
It's "Turnaround" not "Dancing In Your Head"
Yup/ not a quartet either!
Obviously Ornette Coleman had talent and played with feeling. But one the greatest in jazz history on a par with Charlie Parker and Bud Powell?
for sure. actually he was one of the most important musicians of the past century.

imagine this with gut strings on bass

WOW .... JACK, CHARLIE & big O this trio @ their best, ...... They didn't play " be bop & beyond'. They just played BEYOND.
Not Jack on drums
Boring as he always used to be.
