This is a good final but the best I think was those two girls who answered a footballer’s name for a sports option. They knew nothing about football but one of their boyfriends had said if you get any football question guess this player because he’s played for lots of teams. Absolutely brilliant!

(This information is important in a moment) I said “Super Trooper” as it had 2 words, remember that the question had mentioned that the song title had to have 1-2 words in it? Here lies the issue, my dad told me that I was wrong because he thought that “Super Trooper” was all one word! I told him “no I’m right as it has to be 1-2 words. Not 1.” The argument goes back and forth for a few moments with me getting angrier every minute. I then yell “IT’S TWO WORDS NOT ONE!” After that round was over and the presenters were reviewing the answers it turned out that I was right and my dad was wrong! I still rub it in his face to this day.
They seem like such a sweet couple. So happy for them when they won without knowing them nor having seen the rest of the episode. Shame the jackpot wasn’t more sizeable.

Maybe because this is Yasuhito Endo, and the player you're talking about here is Wataru Endo, who was playing in the Japanese second division at the time of the 2014 world cup.
It’s a BBC gameshow, what do you expect? It resets at 1000 every time a team wins so can get high if there hasn’t been a winner for a while, but the general rule is the harder the gameshow, the shittier the prize. Winners of Countdown get a teapot, and that’s probably the hardest of the lot!

I'm not sure how much emphasis a British education places on the Pacific theater in WW2, but if they teach anything at all about it, they would simply have to cover both of those events, so Yamamoto's name would inevitably come up.

As well as the regulation Fondue set and CUDDLY TOY! that did have some reasonable prizes, especially when you consider the years that it was on. As I recall, even if the contestant was pretty hopeless at remembering the items on the conveyor belt, then Bruce would give them help, to make sure that they at least had several items.
And this isn't even that bad. Contestants get 2 (or 3 since 2020) shots at a jackpot that has been know beyond £10,000 or as high at £24,750 on the old endgame.
In the Danish show (That’s on it’s 3rd season right now) the prizes are bigger. The first winner from 2019 won 60,000 kroner (the same as 6,850 pounds). It’s 50,000 in each finals and for a pointless answer during the rounds it’s 10,000 (1141 pounds). So if there are 4 pointless answer + 1 in the final, you can win 90,000 kroner (10,275 pounds) potentially.

I'm surprised nobody got Ito Hirobumi, although I guess it's not _that_ unexpected since no one surveyed was actually Japanese. Ito Hirobumi's famous in Japan for being the first prime minister.
They may also (or at least should, in order to keep it fair for contestants) get all three categories at the same time, and either try to name one in every category, or zoning in on a specific one
