This is bloody awesome, I used to hand erase which was painstaking, I became lazy and didn’t really care for most stuff since it would be too small (I work in packaging) but this is really good moving forward as I do lots of different designs these days. Cheers!

This was so helpful. I do stop-motion animation and often have to separate subjects from backgrounds. In the past I often did the select>contract>delete like you described, and then do another contract for a few pixels and add a blur to the edges so they didn't look so harsh. This is okay-ish most of the time but I'm going to try the smudge tool technique from now on.

I would suggest you host a live question and answer on this channel.
I use this technic frequently. If the soft edge is not what you want when using the Smudge tool, you can go to the mask then click on Image > Ajustment > Levels, then you correct the black and white areas to restore the sharpness of the edge.
