A BGS 9.5 is essentially the same as a PSA 10. I've deep dived into collectors doing the grading reveal videos and the amount of PSA 10s is beyond stupid. Guys are showing of they have 8 out of 15 Zion Williams (or whoever) graded at a PSA 10, which should tell you right there the cards with that grade aren't rare. However, the BGS reveals for a 10 are few and far between. Low information/lazy collectors shooting themselves in the foot.

When it comes to grading standards, PSA is the most inconsistent out of ALL the grading companies (from my experience) I have been grading cards for 12 years and there’s been a handful of times I would get “head scratcher “ grades from PSA. PSA 5’s, 6’s & 7’s, I would snap them and send them to BGS or SGC. Every time the cards would come back from those other companies with an appropriate grade. At times it is a crap shoot with PSA. If their slabs didn’t command such a premium I wouldn’t use them at all.

Stupid to have a BGS 9.5 and call it a 10 compared to PSA 10, If it's a 10, don't have your own system and make it a 9.5, that has to be why there is such a huge difference for PSA10 value or the so called Beckett 10 being a 9.5, to confusing for collectors, they'd rather have a card with a 10 on it -vs- a 9.5 any day, even if they are technically the same grade.

PSA reminds me a bit of the Absolut vodka phenomenon of the 1980's-90's. As someone who is at least a bit educated on the properties of different spirits, I can tell you Absolut is considered S@#t by sophisticated vodka drinkers. It has a pronounced alcohol taste and an aftertaste. A good vodka should have NO aftertaste (it is a neutral spirit). YET every college kid or even some professionals would turn their nose up at something like Ketel 1(a much better vodka). While Stoli and other high quzlity vodkas get recognized Absolut gets a lot of notoriety from an ad campaign that turned into a FAULTY perception that Absolut was high quality. I own mostly BGS cards, but a fair share of PSAs as well. I don't know if marketing triggered the gap (I can't say it did), but the difference is beyond being one simply of price, which is the explanandum, not explanans. It is, I think, a faulty perception that PSA 10 are genuinely higher quality than BGS 9.5s. But enough of the market seemed to think otherwise, and that triggered the price gap. However, I think the perception is fairly groundless.
One thing to consider: Beckett's flaw might have been in creating the 10/pristine grade. The 9.5 is seen as a second tier card in their own system (rather than a subtle difference in gem mint and pristine). Without the same kind of granularity in grading a PSA 10 legitimate can have a wider range of actual quality than a BGS 9.5. (So plenty of PSA 10s would be BGS 9.5s...but I suspect most people assume they would be true BGS 9.5s and it is always possible that the PSA 10 is the same quality as the BGS 10). I suspect that the gap will stabilize. A trend reversal is possible. But BGS needs to do some marketing.

PSA 10 is always what I go for if I can but I think at this point BGS 9.5s are getting very underrated. Esp quads or quad+. To me they feel lower risk than PSA 10, which to me has too big of multiplier on some cards now. I think you have to really study each card and the price points when collecting to find good value. If I only went for PSA 10s I'd run out of money way faster, and as time goes on the 9.5s and 10s are still going to offer investment returns because they are attractive grades for the majority of cards. I do not believe BGS 9.5 will ever be the same value as PSA 10 at any point, but that's fine to me. In regards to centering, PSA definitely gives a break on the centering of most cards. A lot of PSA 10s would be a 9 centering on BGS. I think this comes down to personal preference, 9 centering is fine to me on the majority of cards I own, so I don't really get bothered by the PSA 10 centering scale. They both have different standards, so best to collect what you like most.

  • @starfox1698

The problem is BGS 9.5 doesn't equal PSA 10. That's just a marketing thing that only hardcore collectors believe. The overall market will always value a 10 more.
Gem mint and mint are not objective standards. If I started a grading company and labeled my 7 mint, 8 gem mint, 9 super gem mint, and 10 super duper gem mint, that wouldn't mean my 8 is equal to a PSA 10 or BGS 9.5. People want simply grading scales and PSA has the simplest scale since they don't use half grades. Grading is too subjective to be using half grades. There are not that many different conditions a card can be in.

You could've been collecting cards since the 1920's and it wouldn't make your opinion matter any more than the next collector. You can't make a coherent argument as for why a BGS 9.5 is equivalent to a PSA 10. All you can do is say that's what you've heard from other collectors. That's not an argument. It is a fact that the market doesn't believe the BGS 9.5 is equivalent to a PSA 10. Just look at the market. Comparing BGS 10 to PSA 10 makes more sense.

I wish everyone will just be honest. All these individuals that are critical of BGS is for one reason only and it's that they don't hand out 10's like it's candy. All everyone cares about is how much they can make. It's all about the MARGINS. For example, if I can send a card into PSA and get it graded for $15 -to $25 (pre shutdown) and get a grade of 10, of course, I will send it to to PSA...BGS cost $40 and the chance of getting a grade of 10 is extremely low. SGC is the new PSA with it's low price of $25 per grade and the chance of a grade of 10 is high. They are going to go with SGC. If PSA does not lower it's price they will soon be a mass exit from PSA to SGC. I truly believe if you have a card and you want an honest grade then BGS all day (With Sub Grades). If you are looking to resell then it's obvious PSA & SGC...I don't understand how someone can honestly look at a card and see the imperfection (Centering) and still get a PSA 10. (Is it really a 10?) Why do you think SGC is becoming the new hobby favorite? It's because of their low cost!!! Sadly, it's all about the MARGINS!!!! I truly hope BGS don't change their grading, just lower their cost to remain competitive $25 for basic grading and $30 with Sub Grades and they will return to the top of the food chain. IMHO

I don’t mind 9.5’s in overall grades but I like them as mint plus just as CSG and SGC have them. I believe quad 9.5’s should get an overall 10 gem mint grade. You could keep 10 pristine and 10 perfect. I would consider anything with one/two 9 sub grades with multiple 9.5’s mint plus.
A side note, I just won an auction on a 93 Topps Stadium Club Jeter for $180 in a BGS slab that had subs of 9.5, 9.5, 10, 10. A PSA 10 sold for $670 two days later. You mean to tell me that one sub grade of .5 point to get to pristine is the difference between $180 for 9.5 gem mint all the way up to over $2000 for the pristine (pop 9)??? I’d put that $180 gem mint up against any PSA 10 out there.

bgs their best bet at staying in the game is to focus all they have on being the best patch card graders/holders. they have fumbled their image too much in the grading market to ever get back to where they were especially with how hungry scg and new grading companies are. they have a lil push in their patch card grading and if they were smart they would do all they could to own that part of the market.

It’s difficult to imagine BGS not making a comeback. They have been such a large part of the entire grading world, and their slabs are, in my opinion, the most attractive, especially gold (9.5 or higher). I hope they re-establish themselves. Perhaps a change in certain aspects of their management and marketing is needed.

What has always blown my mind regarding grading, regardless of what company, is the slightest imperfections that are not visible with the human eye can translate into tens of thousands of dollars in value.
I believe that one day gem rates will be just as, if not more important than pop counts. For example, did you know that Ja Morant has a base card with a gem rate of under 1.5%? Not an insert, or a shorter print card or parallel...a true base card.

  • @ricecakejohnson
    @ricecakejohnson 2 года назад +1

The reason PSA 10s are way more then BGS 9.5 lately is also due to PSA's service fees are way higher, so naturally the PSA slabs are going for more money. If PSA was down to $15 to 20 dollars per grading fee, then the PSA resale value will drop a bit, and the BGS 9.5 comparison will be closer. Also, not every BGS 9.5 are the same cause there are min-gem, true-gem, gem-plus, or even gem-plusx2.

Can we really just project other companies shortcomings onto BGS for not recognizing Pristine & Perfect grades? Gem Mint is NOT the end all be all of the grading world, so it makes complete sense to end a true & complete grading scale at Pristine/Perfect 10.

I’m enjoying this - I prefer BGS for my PC, particularly cards with autos. I like SGC, PSA, and CSG. I have lots of these cards. But I find the case to be a premium look, particularly Bowman 1st refractor autos. That said, I still think PSA is over valued, and the market won’t really bottom out until it’s corrected, which sucks because I have lots of cards at PSA still.

  • @angelou1

T POTT the teacher. I think it’s a gets a great disservice to compare Bgs 9.5’s to a PSA 10. Even though bgs call there 9.5 gem mint in the mind of anyone analyzing anything 9.5 does not signify perfection but 10 does. I think bgs made a terrible marketing decision to call a 9.5 gem mint. As a collector l never compare a bgs 9.5 to a PSA 10 when I’m looking for the best grade possible. I mainly buy 10’s and never by 9.5’s as an equivalent. The fact tha bgs 10’s are difficult to get and rare is an apple to apple comparision to a PSA 10 and in my opinion some buyers like bgs some prefer PSA l view it as a Toyota Camry vs Honda Accord. The bgs 10 is pretty much the excellent card for bgs and of course they further muddy things up by having the black label. Bgs just has to many versions of the so called gem mint 10 card and that’s a problem of their own doing. Meanwhile PSA has one singular version of it’s perfect card and when you have the 10 rated card you don’t have to worry about multiple variations and multiples on the pricing models. This is why CSG has gotten rid of the 9.5 . Bgs should have never named the 9.5 gem mint as it allows buyers to unfavorably compare the 9.5 to a PSA 10. 9.5 in any analysis of anything in the world is not considered perfect and 10 is!
