- Can you drive with one eye and what does it take to relearn to drive after losing an eye. This is how driving after my eye removal surgery went for me and a few one eye driving tips that helped me. Eye loss obviously changes things in the car, so here are some of the things that helped me adjust to driving with one eye.

Thank you so much everyone for your excitement at seeing me feeling better! This was a really good day. It helps me to get out on days I am feeling good! I am still having rough days here and there and waking up nauseous a lot of mornings, but I am so grateful to be in a much better place than I was. Here's to continuing on that path!

My husband lost his left cornea and lens in 1988 when he was 26. He had several surgeries, and looking at him, you just see his pupil. Shortly after, he was driving like before the accident. Thirty-six years later, he still drives and does great. He watched your video and agreed with all you said. We wish you and your family the best!!!

I just had a brand new car for the first time in my life and said goodbye to my precious 14 yr old Suzuki friend and got a Toyota Yaris - get me !! So with my 2 elderly eyes it has been an adjustment too !!😳watch out drivers of Somerset England !!

My husband lost sight in his right eye from an injury in 1991 when he was 27 years old. He always adds an extra blind spot mirror to the side mirror of every car he drives (including rentals). You can get them at Walmart or auto supply stores and they just stick on, really helpful. His only real issue has been depth perception, but he lives a completely normal life. You’re doing great and looking good too! ❤️❤️
Melanie you have done the right thing. You and your daughter have a life ahead of you loving each other and being best friends. I see you as a very brave person who is taking care of yourself to be with your daughter. There is nothing in this world as special as the relationship between mother and daughter. I had the best mother ever and I still am in my adult children's lives as well as my grandaughter life. There is always so much to give to them. It AMAZES me how far you have come in this rather short period of time. I know you still have harder days and easier days, and that's to be expected because you've had a lot to adjust to, but you are crushing it. And I am also bizarrely attached to my aging Ford Escape. 🤣

I lost my sight in my right eye about 7 years ago due to a detached retina . I had 4 surgeries. Unfortunately with no success I didnt drive for about 2 years because i lacked confidence. I informed DVLA and they sent me to had a eye test.
I was told i can drive without any restrictions.
I don't drive long 🎉distance or night but it's lovely to keep my independence.
I haven't driven at night yet, not sure when or if I will be attempting that anytime soon. But yes, having the independence is huge. I am so sorry the surgeries weren't successul.
You are looking good today !! My aunt had a glass eye from a trauma with scissors as a child , she drove her entire life , you can do it , good you went for some practice runs !!!
Melanie, you are so beautiful! It’s great that you’ve started driving again. I have a friend who is now blind in one eye, he got used to driving again very quickly. He’s blind in his right eye which gives him a long blind spot as we drive on the left here in the UK. I love your videos. Thank you for keeping us up to date. With lots of love from England! 🇬🇧❤

I’m so happy for you as driving is independence. I’m legally blind in my left eye so I know exactly what you are talking about. Depth perception is indeed a challenge. I also tend to think I’m straight when I’m backing into a parking space but I’m actually pulling to one side more. I’ve learned to compensate for it and I know you will too! I see some joy in that gorgeous face of yours and that makes me smile. ❤❤❤

I love, love, love your patch! And the baby toes in the back are adorable! My brother had a stroke at a young age and only has tunnel vision in one eye. I remember that being an adjustment for him, too. Seems to be doing okay now, just drives really slow like my grandma. 😃

Oh my gosh Mel you look so great. Baby girl is really growing and moving all over. My brother in law had a screw from a work accident when he was 19 ! He lost his eye but got married raised a daughter and was a school bus mechanic for 30 years and retired. And losing his eye he had no problem being what he spent years doing. He had to adjust and you are doing so awesome. Love you girl. So proud of you❤

This is a great positive Melanie. Driving! Some sense of freedom and healing. Yes, I know of many in the Ommie (ocular melanoma) community who have endured enucleation and are driving find. I'm so happy for you that you are driving. I have known a couple of people who were blind in one eye who drove, so I knew it was just a matter of adapting. I had an eye doctor put a patch on my eye because of a scratch on my cornea. With no time to adjust, I found I could not drive myself home. I ended up removing the patch until I got home.

So glad you are at this point of confidence! I wanted to tell you that we have a good friend who, on his fourth tour of duty in Iraq, he lost his left eye to an IED. Not only did Peter continue in the military, he applied to become an Army ranger! That is the HARDEST position possible. Not ONE soldier with any kind of a "disability " had ever been admitted to the program. Peter wrote a few letters and got special permission to attend the program. Not only was he accepted, Peter graduated number one in his class with ONE eye! He is a sharp shooter, with one eye! You've got this mama! The sky is the limit for you now! And no, I'm not suggesting you should go into the military! You, in fact, have the hardest and MOST important job of any, being a mom to that special angel! 😘
