"U Make Me Feel" by MK2
I have to give it to Chelsea because she always brings up alternative perspectives, themes, and interpretations that I've never picked up on in movies I've seen hundreds of times.
Chelsea please don't ever feel you need to apologise for the podcast being academic and research based. That's what makes it so fantastic! Your deeper, more analytical episodes are my favourite part of this whole channel and I find them so incredibly engaging. They are truly the reason I recommend Dead Meat to people!
Shout out to Chelsea and all the time and energy she put into gathering all that research!! 👍👍👍 Very informative/thoughtful 👍👍👍
boytoy namedtroy she also has great shirts
Honestly! Her intelligence, drive, and passion shine in every podcast. She loves what she does and makes us love it too.
She's amazing
I do like all the work Chelsea put into this but she got the Texas chainsaw massacre being based ed gein wrong.
Exactly. She is a pro for sure.
Sweet an added Podcast to go with the upcoming Kill-Count, love the first two TCM films, the rest are hit or miss (the original remake being a hit for me). Excited to see your recaps/Kill Counts :)
You did a really cool job doing the evolution of leatherface I love your animation.
I subscribed
I watch you alot!
i know im 2 years late and your not going to see this comment but i really like the original as well as leatherface but that could just be that i like origin stories as well as the twist as well
For me the first 2 movies are great and the rest is terrible (no offence though, it’s only my opinion).
These podcasts compliment the Kill Count series so well! The incredible research and thoughtful discussions are sincerely appreciated. I've learned more from these episodes than I have from my university film classes ... without accumulating more student debt. I hope you're able to withstand any economic pressures to forego the academic angle and transform into fluff sessions. Thanks so much!
2017:where’s Texas Chainsaw
2019:ah it’s about time
Yessss
My favorite circle in the film is that everything went wrong when they picked up the insane hitchhiker and the film ends by a person picking her up (as a hitchhiker) who is also unstable which made me feel really worried that she was going to go crazy on the person who picked her up.
In the extended intro clips from movies that haven't been covered (The Shining, Carrie, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Lost Boys, The VVitch, and American Psycho) have for the longest time outnumbered clips from movies that have been covered (Friday The 13th, Get Out, The Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Night of the Living Dead) by a score of 6-5.
As of today Texas Chainsaw Massacre evens the numbers to 5-5.
Love this factoid
@@DeadMeat Love this channel.
Yep
Now only 2 left to be covered
Now it be 9 to 2 with the Lost boys and American psycho being the only ones not covered yet. Lost boys does have 2 sequels and American psycho has 1 as far as i know. So they're not one offs.

The last little tidbit made my day lmao
I always described TCM as a visualized panic attack. It's one of my favorite movies ever.
i absolutely LOVE Chelsea's shirt "when it comes to chain saws ask the pro" SO PERFECT XD

It was spelled correctly on the shirt...

The rest of the shirt is literally an ad for the chainsaw, it’s a badass shirt lol
But my thoughts on the ending, acdemically knowing the interpretation of the film as a refection of America's time in history, Sally is the youth of the country, the future of America, having escaped the darkness but never able to forget, for better or worse. And the Sawyers still remain, in the shadows, the secret darkness in our world we know is out there, but hope we never encounter again.
Wait it was? That’s upsetting

I KNOW RIGHT XDDD
I was expecting the podcast two days ago and I got trolled

Well,
Maybe you should slow tf down and read buddy.
Chelsea's clear passion for this film really shows. It makes it so fun to watch and listen to. 😊
Texas Chainsaw is a classic, I love it. Interesting stuff!
horror films should could from a real place and not just be simple morality tales of like don't under age drink drive smoke weed and have pre marital sex and stupid shit like they always tend to be about...like the chucky series...wtf is that?...who decided to make sequels to a bland film about a killer doll...why?...what does it teach?..nothing..its just death for no reason..i get making the first one for novelty but after that just stop...
Did you know...the working title if the film was "Headcheese".
@@bobz1782 Headcheese was the working title for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The name fits (just try researching how headcheese is made, and Nubban [aka The Hitchhiker] in the first movie said his brother makes the best headcheese), but I doubt we would be talking about this amazing movie if it still had that name, let alone the sequels.
Yup,forgot that
I had no idea the Texas *Chainsaw Massacre* lore was so *deep* and *controversial* . You guys could write VOLUMES of HORROR HISTORY BOOKS. I would love to see *James & Chelsea in print.*

I just discovered this channel two or three days ago and now I'm addicted to it! It's phenomenal. I can't even begin to imagine all the hard labour that's involved to do something like this, but it's so worth it! Keep up the great work.

The idea about horror movies representing ‘collective nightmares’ around the 25 minute mark is soooo interesting! Great episode.
Coincidence I had a nightmare about the Texas chainsaw massacre last night?
Probably yes
so i recently came across fighting game youtuber maximilian dood and was sucked in by the mortal kombat games as a result. i thought leatherface was kinda neat and watched some combo videos, and then had a video showing all the deaths from the movies. i was like, "hey, im sure James mustve made a kill count on this series", and was surprised to find nothing other than a video from 7 months ago about upcoming kill counts and it had jason and leatherface silhouettes in the thumbnail and thought to give up and just wait. turns out i only waited 3 days haha.
Yoshiko Tsushima interesting
Every time I watch this movie I now feel compelled to stick on this pod straight after, to immediately reinforce and enrich my appreciation of it. Such a great touchpoint for all the underlying themes
I keep finding myself coming back to this episode to re-watch/listen to. Chelsea did such a fantastic job with the research and sounds so passionate! Thank you for all the hard work that went into this one :)
Okay I love the killcounts so much they're great overviews of the movies with awesome insight and funny commentary throughout, but I REALLY love these podcasts. Chelsea puts so much time and effort into creating an educated dialogue about each and every subject and it's always to fascinating to hear what you guys have to say. This episode especially felt like a real labor of love and Chelsea's passion for this movie really shines throughout. You guys help make the horror genre accessible for people who otherwise might not give it a second glance.
After listening to this episode I have SOOO many thoughts about the movie!
You guys mentioned that Texas Chainsaw Massacre is considered one of the most iconic slasher films out there, despite the fact that is really doesn't have a lot of blood/gore. This couldn't have been intentional because you can't really control how the audience responds to a film, especially years after its release, but I think there's an interesting parallel to be made with the response/status of this movie and the image of America as a whole. There's a large demographic that views certain eras of America as "the golden years" when in reality it was only golden for a very specific demographic (white, straight, male, etc.), that demographic then choosing to ignore the other social/political movements that occurred at that time. And in the same way there's a large population that remembers or considers this movie as a violent slasher when in reality the horror is only the top layer of a film focused on social/political commentary.
Also!! Near the end of the podcast you also theorized about whether or not Sally and Franklin might have met the Sawyers when they were younger (since their houses were literally right next to each other). I think that could be a metaphor for how white suburban society has a tendency to turn a blind eye to any Wrongness or disfunctionality within their neighborhood. Domestic violence and child abuse was happening all the time during that era and so many people choose to ignore it because it would be inconvenient for them to take responsibility for something bad happening in their own backyard.
ANYWAY!
I love this podcast so much. It keeps me company at work and I always look forward to hearing what you guys have to say. Thank you so much for your passion and wisdom!
Just watched this movie yesterday. 10/10 would recommend

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the greatest horror film ever made. Its depth and simplicity are incomparable.

“So Sally’s Cambodia?” LOL, I guess Sally’s gonna be REALLY messed up after her experience here.

These podcasts reminds me of the Horror film class I took in college. We spent a whole 4 hour class talking about Texas Chainsaw and it was such a good class
Lol Henry Kissinger dies the day I rewatch this
I’ve watched so much analysis of this movie, but WOAH, Chelsea has brought like 100x more to my attention than any other TCM student. This was beyond brilliant! Thank you!
I zoned out for a moment during this podcast and when I started listening again, I heard this: "Hansel and Gretel does feature kidnapping, imprisonment, and attempted cannabilism
When I read your Comment I was literally at the same point of the video. Holy this is crelpy
I’ll never not be baffled by the amount of research Chelsea puts into EVERY podcast not to mention all the editing! Love it!
hell yessss i love the academia-heavy episodes of the podcast! this was a joy to listen to. great work, chelsea and james!
Texas chainsaw massacre: the beginning. That movie freaked me out when the girlfriend is hiding under the table while her boyfriend gets chainsawed to death.
For a second I thought the kill count was early but I'm still gonna enjoy
In the 1st film Drayton had a "I'm doing what I have to do" attitude to the killing and cannibalism. He didn't like it but to him it had to be done for the sake of his and his family's survival. But in the 13 or 14 years between the 1st and second films he started to enjoy it more and went even more insane. He seemed to have a split personality because one minute he was telling off Leatherface and Nubbins for treating their torment of Sally like a party then the next he was laughing at her with them. Speaking of split personalities, according to Tobe Hooper the reason Leatherface wore multiple masks was to express himself because he had no personality of his own so he instead takes on the personalities of people he kills whose faces he cuts off and wears as masks. The Grandmother mask was probably the face of an old woman the Sawyers killed at some point and he wears that mask when he wants to help in the kitchen. The Pretty Woman mask was probably from a young female victim. It's obvious the Sawyers had already killed and eaten many people before the events of TCM 1. Sally, Franklin and their friends aren't their first victims. Just their latest.
You should read Chain Saw Confidential. Super good book written by the OG Leatherface.

Shout out to Chelsea for the research & putting together this VERY deep dive into (thus far) my favorite horror film - love both TKK & DMP 🤘
I was halfway through the last episode when this one dropped. I’m late but it was worth it!
It’s so creepy how recently all the influences on this movie have repeated out of no where (foreign war, gas shortage, labor issues). We’re living in the 70s 2.0 and it’s just as apocalyptic.
The twisted thing about the dinner scene is that even though for Sally it's a horrible torment for the Sawyers it's just a normal dinner.
This is by far the most thorough and insightful analysis I've seen of one of the greatest horror films of all time. Fascinating stuff; the next time I watch this movie will be through new eyes. Circular, veiny, rolling eyes.
Get you a man that looks at you the way James looks at Chelsea.
Dead meme, but still rings true
Thanks for all of your hard work Chelsea! One of my favorite parts about Dead Meat, and the podcast in particular, is the in-dept and academic analysis of my favorite genre! This episode was particularly insightful and I cannot wait for the next one! Keep up the great work guys
This episode was great, I've never seen the film, but hearing Chelsea's insight into the deeper meaning of the characters and situation is bloody fascinating. Great Job yous two and I look forward to the Kill Count and next weeks podcast.
Just finished listening to the audio version of this podcast and just had to come here and thank Chelsea for all the research she put into this episode. TCM is a top favorite horror of mine and to have even more historical lore behind it and insight into why the movie is the way that it is and how it was made just made me love it even more. So thank u for that, now I need to go rewatch TCM 🏃♀️🏃♀️
Excited for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre kill count tomorrow! Can't wait for other series to covered soon like Jaws, Final Destination, Hostel, Hellraiser, Gremlins, Piranha, Puppetmaster, and some one offs along the way.
Dude this is amazing. Like Chelsea, TCM is my Favorite horror film, and I am also a True Crime head, and Chelsea, you really did that! All the research and theories and quotes from Henkel And Hooper, and the Nixon and Drayton Theory, I thought I knew it all but boy was I wrong! These podcasts are the greatest. I never had time to take film theory classes in college and now even less to delve into that so I'm so happy to get these subjects in such a fun podcast :)
Chelsea knows what's up. Greatest horror film of all time
to explain why 70s horror is so different (and so good) is because, the Hays Code had been disbanded in 1968, this was a long and strict set of rules that censored pretty much everything and had been in place since the 30s. violence and sexuality (especially homosexual allusions) were banned and or heavily censored. next point, I did an English unit at university this semester, in our study of Twelfth Night, we discussed the concept of a Green World, the setting where socially unacceptable or taboo activities take place and they are justified, Illyria is the Green World in Twelfth Night. we discussed that in horror the Green World concept is replaced by the Monster, which fits the theory of repression. Vampires are our lust and bloodlust, Witches is our femininity, and the serial killers are our violence tendencies.
Ive been waiting for hours for this. It popped up on my podcast player, but I had to see the twinkle in James and Chelseas eyes while talking about it.
